Dr Joseph Pizzorno is one of our leading authorities on science-based natural and integrative medicine.
He’s an experienced naturopathic physician, educator, researcher, author and expert spokesperson, as well as founder and President Emeritus of Bastyr University.
Recently he gave one of the keynotes by live web link at a London practitioner CAM Conference addressing the health challenges created by our increasingly toxic world.
Our immunity – the way we adapt and respond to challenges like disease and advancing age is greatly influenced by our cumulative lifetime toxic load. For almost all of us in Western and industrially developed countries, our toxic load is now likely to be significantly more than that of our grandparents.
In fact, says Pizzorno, “toxicity has become the new normal”, explaining that so-called ‘normal’ laboratory ranges used in medicine are actually now reflective of a more toxic population. Do you understand this? It means when you go to a medical lab for a test, that test will be compared to a statistical norm of a toxic population. You will be compared only with a toxic average, not a healthy person.
Dr Pizzorno told practitioners that his extensive research into this area has shown that toxicity is now playing a part in most chronic diseases. Yet, most conventional measures of toxic load in the human body are flawed. Blood levels, says Pizzorno, primarily only reflect acute exposure. The body will prioritise removing the toxins from the bloodstream as rapidly as possible, preferring to sequester them more ‘safely’ in organs and tissues — which are far harder to test.
So what does this mean? Many of the accepted conventional tests more indirect measures of toxic load, than actual.
Fortunately, there are a number of things we can do reduce our toxic load and to support our body’s internal detoxification processes.
Before we move on with Dr Pizzorno’s work on the effects of the environmental chemical burden on our risk of chronic diseases, let’s get some background.
Whether a given substance acts as a toxin or not isn’t always straightforward. Paracelsus said some 450 years ago, it is the “dose that makes the poison”. Others later added that the place of exposure is just as important.
It’s true that we have evolved to deal with many of the natural chemicals in our environment.
Many plant chemicals intended to be toxic to insects such as glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables (from the Brassica family) are actually beneficial to us at the levels we typically ingest in our diet. Our evolutionary adaptation means that, historically, many substances we encountered in our bodies from our environment and our diet were not toxic to us. Chemicals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury, always present in our environment, were historically present in ultra-trace quantities.
As more research is conducted, we are finding more and more that such ultra-trace metals and minerals have beneficial effects at very low exposure levels.
Yet we didn’t evolve to cope with these metals at the high levels to which we’re often exposed today, so our detoxification system, that has evolved over aeons, is struggling.
Modern industry has unleashed a massive range of new-to-nature chemicals that our bodies have not evolved to deal with. Consider just a few: fire retardant chemicals, dry cleaning fluids, synthetic building materials, pesticides, air pollution, perfumes, personal care products, makeup, paints, Teflon, plasticisers and food additives… the list is very, very long. Many of these assaults are frequent if not continuous. Many occur over years or decades. Some of the chemicals over which we have particular concern, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), xenoestrogens and the herbicide glyphosate are now ubiquitous in our environment.
Some of these chemicals are toxic at microscopic levels, whilst others become so at higher levels depending on the type of chemical, our genetic susceptibility and our overall toxic load. As they say, one person’s meat is another’s poison.
Pizzorno applies the same mathematical formula involving the underlying prevalence of disease risk factor in the population, and relative risk, to estimate the percentage of disease attributable to toxicity. From this, he has been able to estimate that 13.6% of diabetes can be attributed to Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic plasticiser found, among other places, in the lining of canned foods and detectable in over 90% of the US population. BPA has been found (among other things) to increase blood pressure.
Using the same method, Pizzorno’s team have estimated from the research literature that 50% of ADHD is attributable to PAHs, PBDEs (fire retardants, particularly in kid’s clothing) and PCBs, and 50% of diabetes is attributable to phthalates, arsenic and PAHs.
Certain clinical laboratory tests can be used as indirect measures of toxic exposure. For example white blood cell count can be lowered by exposure to the persistent organic pollutants PCBs and OCPs; Solvents can decrease platelet count; Poly-fluorinated hydrocarbons like Teflon are associated with increased serum uric acid; polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) decrease thyroid hormones T3 and T4 and exposure to cadmium, lead, mercury and PCBs may raise levels of the liver enzyme ALT.
If you’ve grown up in an English speaking country, chances are you’ve heard that saying a million times or more. But we seem to have turned a deaf ear to the word ‘ripe’. Just like the ripest, juiciest peach in the bowl, old age isn’t meant to mean infirm, decrepit and away with the fairies. Pizzorno’s research clearly shows that our adaptive range becomes less able to cope with toxic assaults as we age. We need to cut our exposure to life to enjoy a more juicy, ripe old age.
There are just two steps we can all benefit from
- Choose organic food where you can, especially when it comes to animal products. When it comes to fish, the size of the mouth relative to the body is an interesting marker for its toxic burden; the bigger the mouth in relation to the body size, the bigger the burden. Sardines, for instance, contain much less mercury than tuna or swordfish.
- Be aware of the US Environmental Working Group’s ‘Dirty Dozen Plus’ list of fruit and vegetables, that are best avoided if non-organic due to their pesticide levels. And the ‘Clean Fifteen’, which lists those that you can safely eat as non-organic.
- Choose natural health and beauty products that do not contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and avoid household cleaning products loaded with new-to-nature chemicals.
- Whilst it’s impossible with today’s safety consciousness to avoid flame retardant furniture and mattresses, ensure new acquisitions are aired thoroughly before exposing yourself, your children and any pets. This is especially true when bringing dry cleaned clothes back home.
- Change Teflon-coated non-stick cookware for safer alternatives (e.g. cast iron, stainless steel, ceramic, etc. Even Dupont admits that Teflon frying pans can kill birds in a kitchen! Apparently, it’s safe for humans, including babies and toddlers. Ummmm.
- Be vigilant for other exposures you can choose to avoid e.g. mercury-free dentistry and chemical exposure at work.
- Make sure you eat sufficient, protective, fibre – both soluble, like pectin, oatmeal and psyllium, and insoluble, like the peel of the apples, whole grains (gluten-free ideally), vegetables and nuts. Make vegetables that support liver function part of your daily diet. Vegetables, particularly cruciferous from the Brassica family (cabbage, kale, broccoli) and fruit, fresh herbs and non-irradiated spices are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients e.g.curcumin found in turmeric.
- Exercise is also beneficial, and so it seems is meditation. Food supplements such as alpha lipoic acid (ALA) has been found to protect neurons from the effects of mercury. Glutathione is the most powerful, protective, antioxidant and detoxifying molecule in the body. Made in the liver, it’s depleted by oxidative stress, toxicity and excessive alcohol consumption. Keeping our level of glutathione high is one of the best antidotes for ageing, as well as promoting better health. Whilst glutathione as a food supplement is poorly absorbed, taking n-acetylcysteine (NAC), one of its precursors, is much more effective. Milk thistle has a long history of use in liver support.
- A wide range of vitamins and minerals support innate detoxification processes. These include B vitamins, especially folate and B12, as well as the minerals selenium and zinc. Supporting methylation pathways with folate is very helpful for the innate detoxification systems.
- Our bodies naturally eliminate toxins via our faeces and urine, but also through our breath, and through sweating. Full body steam therapy has been around for thousands of years, and the therapeutic use of hydrotherapy and hyperthermia for removal of heavy metals and other pollutants has been studied and found of benefit. For an effective detoxifying sweat, you need to stay in the heat for 1-2 hours until your sweat turns ‘oily’. Be careful of trying this without supervision and/or in Public saunas and steam rooms as they usually run at too high temperatures to support his length of sweat.
- Drink good water! Not juices in excess, not coffees and teas, not sodas, wines spirits and beer. Good water is hard to find from your kitchen tap with literally hundreds of large and small communities being identified with lead and other emerging contaminants like pharmaceutical residues. Drink plenty of water because simply, water facilitates every aspect of detox.
