WHAT IS ORP?
Oxidation Reduction Potential (or Redox) is the activity or strength of oxidizers and reducers in relation to their concentration.
Oxidizers accept electrons, reducers lose electrons.
Examples of oxidizers are: chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, bromine, ozone, and chlorine dioxide.
Examples of reducers are sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfate and hydrogen sulfide.
Like acidity and alkalinity, the increase of one is at the expense of the other. A single voltage is called the ORP, or Oxidation-Reduction Potential, where a positive voltage shows a solution attracting electrons (oxidizing agent). For instance, chlorinated water will show a positive ORP value whereas sodium sulfite (a reducing agent) loses electrons and will show a negative ORP value.
ORP is measured in millivolts (mV), with no correction for solution temperature. Like pH, it is not a measurement of concentration directly, but of activity level. In a solution of only one active component, ORP indicates concentration.
As with pH, a very dilute solution will take time to accumulate a measurable charge.
An ORP sensor uses a small platinum surface to accumulate charge without reacting chemically. That charge is measured relative to the solution, so the solution “ground” voltage comes from the reference junction – the same type used by a pH sensor.
HISTORY OF ORP
ORP electrodes were first studied at Harvard University in 1936. These studies showed a strong correlation of ORP and bacterial activity. These tests were confirmed by studies on drinking water and swimming pools in other areas of the world. In 1971 ORP (700 mV) was adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a standard for drinking water. In 1982 the German Standards Agency adopted the ORP (750 mV) for public pools and in 1988 the National Swimming Pool Institute adopted ORP (650 mV) for public spas.
WHERE IS ORP USED?
As you can tell by the previous paragraphs, ORP is used for drinking water, swimming pools and spas. However, ORP is also used for cooling tower disinfection, groundwater remediation, bleaching, cyanide destruction, chrome reductions, metal etching, fruit and vegetable disinfection and dechlorination. In test after test on poliovirus, E. coli, and other organisms, a direct correlation between ORP and the rate of inactivation was determined. It is, therefore, possible to select an individual ORP value, expressed in millivolts, at which a predictable level of disinfection will be achieved and sustained regardless of variations in either oxidant demand or oxidant concentration. Thus, individual ORP targets, expressed in millivolts, can be determined for each application, which will result in completely reliable disinfection of pathogens, oxidation of organics, etc. Any level of oxidation for any purpose can be related to a single ORP number which, if maintained, will provide utterly consistent results at the lowest possible dosage.* * Courtesy of US Filter/Stranco products.
WHY USE ORP?
ORP is a convenient measure of the oxidizer’s or reducer’s ability to perform a chemical task.
ORP is not only valid over a wide pH range, but it is also a rugged electrochemical test, which can easily be accomplished using in-line and handheld instrumentation. It is by far a more consistent and reliable measurement than say chlorine alone. Application Bulletin
OXIDATION REDUCTION POTENTIAL (ORP)/REDOX and FREE CHLORINE
Water Quality Instrumentation Accuracy • Reliability • Simplicity LIMITATIONS FOR ORP As with all testing, ORP has certain limitations. The speed of response is directly related to the exchange current density which is derived from concentration, the oxidation reduction system, and the electrode. If the ORP of a sample is similar to the ORP of the electrode, the speed will be diminished. Carryover is also a possible problem when checking strong oxidizers or reducers, and rinsing well will help greatly. Although a better indicator of bactericidal activity, ORP cannot be used as a direct indicator of the residual of an oxidizer due to the effect of pH and temperature on the reading. ORP can be correlated to a system by checking the oxidizer or reducer in a steady state system with a wet test, and measuring pH. If the system stays within the confines of this steady state parameter (usually maintained by inline or continuous control), a good correlation can be made. The best recommendation for ORP is to use wet tests, and over three test periods correlate the ORP values to those test parameters. FREE CHLORINE CONVERSION USING ORP The most ubiquitous and cost-effective sanitizing agent used in disinfection systems is chlorine.
When chlorine is used as the sanitizer, free chlorine measurements are required to ensure residual levels high enough for ongoing bactericidal activity. Myron L digital handheld instrumentation accurately converts ORP measurements to free chlorine based on the understanding of the concentrations of the forms of free chlorine at a given pH and temperature. The conversion is accurate when chlorine is the only oxidizing/reducing agent in solution and pH is stable between 5 and 9. This pH range fits most applications because pH is usually maintained such that the most effective form of free chlorine, hypochlorous acid, exists in the greatest concentration with respect to other variables such as human tolerance.
Dr Mami Noda is Associate Professor, in the laboratory of Pathophysiology, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyushu University, Japan.
She has been witness to the rise of the electric water ionizer and of molecular hydrogen. Her comments here come with real authority. If you are still wondering whether you should go the ‘old’ way of an electric water ionizer or the ‘new’ way of a molecular hydrogen water system, her comments have great relevancy.
“I have been involved with pharmacology for over 30 years. After my postdoctoral fellow at the Rockefeller University, I continued my research at Kyushu University, where “alkaline ionized water” was initially studied in 1997. Although there was a significant amount of false information contained in the marketing, and it became quite popular in Japan, I remained skeptical. However, in 2005, a colleague shared some interesting data from a Parkinson’s disease patient who had been drinking this type of water, which prompted me to investigate its effects.
We knew that H2 gas was being produced during the process, but we did not think that H2 could have any biological effects, especially given hydrogen’s extremely low solubility in water (0.8 mM at SATP). However, by testing every variable of the water (e.g. minerals, pH, H2, etc.), it was clear that only H2 was exerting the benefit.
This became more believable once we saw the 2007 Nature Medicine publication, which demonstrated H2’s therapeutic effects. Our 2009 publication of an MPTP-induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease also showed beneficial effects from H2. We later discovered that the benefits in this model were mediated by H2-induced gastric ghrelin secretion via a ß1 adrenergic receptor-dependent pathway.
Although hydrogen’s effect in Parkinson’s disease has now been confirmed in a human clinical trial, more research is necessary to reveal the molecular mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic benefits of H2. Because of hydrogen’s high safety profile, ease of administration, and its promising medical effects, I feel obligated as a pharmacologist to continue my investigations of H2 as a novel medical gas.”

What is “Ionized Water”?

It’s really a meaningless term. Yes, it is possible for water to contain dissolved ions (electrically-charged atoms or molecules), but that’s something else again. Almost all waters we find in nature acquire ions such as calcium and bicarbonate as they pass through our wear down rocks and sediments. Even the purest rainwater gains some hydrogen- and bicarbonate ions as it passes through carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Pure water consists as we all know – almost entirely of H2O molecules. These are loosely bound in a network-like structure, but please, don’t even mention ‘microclustered’ one of the favourite sales terms used by MLM water ionizer selllers. Individual molecules in water are serious ‘swingers’. They are constantly changing partners. Water molecules exhibit a very slight tendency to dissociate (“ionize”) into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions: (H2O > H+ + OH-) but this reaction is severely limited by the fact that the reverse of this reaction is much more rapid, so that on the average, only about two out of every billion H2O molecules is dissociated. And we are talking about reforming and ‘swinging’ fast.. a matter of femtoseconds. Changing so fast, any idea of structure is a bit of a laugh in scientific circles. No electrical device or chemical additive is capable of increasing these ion concentrations in pure water above this very minute level which is so small that for most practical purposes pure water can be considered to be ion-free, as evidenced by the fact that it will not conduct an electric current.
Acidic and alkaline water
All water and all aqueous solutions contain both H+ and OH– ions. If the quantity of H+ exceeds that of the OH-, the water is termed acidic. If there are more OH- ions than H+, the water is alkaline. Pure water, containing equal numbers of both ions, is termed neutral.
Chemists express the degree of acidity or alkalinity on the pH scale. This runs from 0 to 14. Acidic solutions have pH values of less than 7, alkaline solutions more than 7. Pure water, being neutral, has a pH of exactly 7. Each unit on the pH scale represents a hundred-fold change in the ratio of the two kinds of ions; for example, if the pH is 8, there are 100 times as many OH- ions than H+ ions (that is, [H+] = 10-8, [OH-] = 10-6.)
Regardless of whether a water is acidic or alkaline, it always contains equal numbers of positive and negative electric charges. Since ‘alkaline’ water contains an excess of OH- ions, it must also contain some other kind of positive ion in addition to H+ in order to equalize the opposite charges. This extra positive ion is almost always a metal ion such as sodium, calcium or magnesium. Similarly, an acidic water must always contain negative ions in addition to OH-; the most common of these is bicarbonate HCO3-. This means that waters whose pH differs from 7 are never “pure” in the chemical sense.
“Ionized water” is one of many products and panaceas that the wonky wellness industry flogs presents to the very large segment of the general public that lacks the scientific background to distinguish scientific fact from pseudo scientific hype when the two are closely intertwined. What most of these treatment devices actually sell are grossly overpriced electrical devices that purport to produce “ionized” and alkaline water by the process of electrolysis.
The bottom line when it comes to ionized water…
“Ionized water” is nothing more than sales fiction. It is meaningless to chemists.
Most potable water is simply too unconductive to undergo significant electrolysis, and that’s why an electric water ionizer needs water with a fair amount of mineral ions in it; to facilitate electrolysis. To suimmarize, pure water can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be made so by electrolysis.
Groundwater containing metal ions such as calcium and magnesium can be rendered slightly alkaline by electrolysis. A pH test will show a high pH, but this does not correlate to higher levels of alkaline minerals in the water. One could say it’s a sort of ‘artificial’ alkalinity.
The idea that one must consume alkaline water to neutralize the effects of acidic foods is a little ambitious. The body is subject to and uses many factors to maintain its blood pH level of 7.35. If the water we drink has alkaline minerals in it, of course these minerals will be added to the body’s storehouse (buffer) of alkaline minerals, just as alkaline minerals in our food are also added. On the other side of the equation, we have a 24 hour pH balancing system. It’s called the breath.
Most claims about the health benefits of drinking alkaline water are just not supported by any volume of scientific evidence. Yes, as we have said, it has an effect. But the effect is so negligible that if you had to drink acidic rain water then nothing really terrible will ensue – contrary to what the electric ionizer vendors will tell you.
The most negative point of most electrolysis devices is their big box store-basic filtration. It’s simply amazing that people buy a $4000 water ionizer and get a vary basic filter. They are generally worthless for filtering water for health enhancement, removal of common impurities, disinfection, and scale control.
So.. is there an alternative?
From what we’ve explained so far, the major drawbacks of electrolysis water ionizers are:
- Ability to alkalize (add alkaline minerals to water)
I should add to this list the problem of excess calcium in source water. Vast areas of the world have ‘hard’ water supplies and the biggest name and most expensive water ionizers need weekly 20 minute water-wasting cleanses to maintain performance. Only certain electric units have made any advance in this area.
But there’s one other amazing fact the big name water ionizer companies are still ignoring. it’s a design ‘flaw’ that turns out to be a design benefit. And – although it’s hard to believe – the big companies resisted it strenuously,. even making legal threats to the discoverer of this amazing benefit. No matter how often we talk about it here on this website and in our videos, there are vendors ‘out there’ still claiming that their high pH water is ‘alkaline water’.
1. “Alkaline water” is water with added alkaline minerals. It will give a high pH readings on a pH meter.
2. ‘High pH water is water with a high level of hydrogen atoms (ions). It can be artificially made to seem like alkaline water by using electrolysis.
What’s the difference?
Alkaline water contributes alkaline minerals to the body which can be used as a ‘buffer’ to counteract and neutralise excess acids. High pH water may have little to no alkaline minerals in it as therefore has little to no capability of acting as a buffer in the body.
Cheap Hydrogen Water?

Every now and then he takes on a product he thinks is exceptional, and this one certainly looks good. All the advantages of a $4000 water ionizer for less than $100. Cassie asked Ian his opinion.

It’s almost a tie. Around half of our populated regions on planet earth have hard water, the other half, soft water.
‘Hard water’ is water with calcium and (perhaps) magnesium dissolved in it. The term refers to water from your tap.
‘Soft water’ is the opposite. It has little or no dissolved minerals.
Both have their problems, so let’s discuss them first.
Because it carries alkaline minerals, hard water is also capable of depositing these minerals when you use it. Typical problems are calcium encrustation on kettles, glasses, hot water system elements, dishwashers. Even the kitchen tap can block up with calcium!
Also, because hard water is high in calcium, drinking it increases the amount of calcium we get internally. This sounds good.. but without the right calcium management strategy, it can be quite dangerous, with possible CVD, and no advantage to your skeleton.
The WHO has made very clear that demineralised or mineral free water is NOT healthy. The recent scientific study of Israeli deaths attributed to reverse osmosis water demonstrates the problem.
We have a need for set ratios of electrolytes (charged minerals) in our body and lack of them does have a resulting longterm health effect.
People do get confused about what should stay in your water and what should leave, but the above dire result demonstrates that we do need some minerals in our water.
Our water filtration decision, therefore, comes down to:
Maximum contaminant reduction.
Minimum dissolved mineral removal.
Your two choices are reverse osmosis and non-reverse osmosis..
..has been sold as the ultimate filter. While reverse osmosis is effective for removing a variety of contaminants in water, the reverse osmosis membrane alone does NOT remove volatile organic chemical (VOCs), chlorine and chloramines, pharmaceuticals, and a host of other synthetic chemicals found in municipal water. However, some newer, more expensive R.O. systems now have multi-stage filtration media (in addition to the R.O. membrane), such as activated carbon, which does remove chlorine and certain pesticides.
It is seen as the best all round contaminant filter system but as we have seen here it’s now clear that drinking ’empty’ water is a real health risk. (lack of electrolytes)
Vendors offer remineralising cartridges but frankly, most are of very poor quality, do not give a regulated dosage over the life of the filter, and are usually sourced from China.
Reverse osmosis is also a hard install job, the most difficult of all filters to keep replenished with replacement filters, and the hardest to repair. If you buy a quality RO you will most probably be also buying an ongoing contract for filter replacement by a professional who has to come to your home.
.. is your alternative. I’ll keep to the basic points of comparison here because this is a BIG subject.
The standard carbon filter you can buy off the shelf at a big box store is a basic filter and doesn’t come anywhere near an RO for contaminant removal.
It’s usually GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) the cheapest and least effective form of the most common filter material, carbon. Carbon works for chlorine, taste odor and smell, some pesticides and lead, but only for a short time. This is why these filters never show you a life-of-filter test result. Their first day of use is their best and it’s all downhill after that!
More advanced filters may include technologies like activated catalytic carbon, fluoride reduction media, heavy metal reduction media and electro-adsorptive technology to remove viruses, bacteria and cysts.
These cost more, naturally (you really do get what you pay for in filtration!) but give filtration efficiency even better than RO in some areas, without the complexity of installation, support and maintenance. The most important comparison point to RO is that they allow dissolved minerals through, but also remove the nasty ones (heavy metals).
Effects Of Hard Water
The ‘mechanism’ of hard water effects is:
1. Water with dissolved calcium enters a water filter.
2. Calcium comes out of solution and accretes on internal surfaces.
This may be caused by heat, passing through filter media, or a change in pH.
A good customer of ours rang after looking at a video from another water alkalizer company regarding fluoride.
I thought the easiest way to help her was to look at the video and comment.

If you’ve ever used pH strips.. then used liquid pH reagent, you’ll now that the strips seem to read lower than the reagent when used to measure alkaline water.
We’d have people calling us up to tell us their AlkaWay system wasn’t measuring up.. and eventually we got it! They were using pH strips.
We send them pH drops, and voila! like magic, their water is testing good pH again.When they use pH reagent drops that change the water color to show pH level , it immediately registers correct.
It’s all about alkalinity vs. pH.
pH test Strips are designed to test body fluids. Our body fluids – urine and saliva are ‘alkaline’ but not high pH (see the video below.) This just means our fluids have a concentration of alkaline minerals in the water. Things like electrolytes, salts and other mineral compounds constitute the alkaline material. It’s this concentration which registers on a pH strip
With what we generally refer to as alkaline water, there is a difference between alkalinity and pH level.
With electric water ionizers, that don’t actually add any alkaline minerals to the water, that difference can be pretty large. It’s the reason the pH level can fall quickly after removing it from the the machine. With natural systems like the UltraStream, that difference is usually less, which results in a water that loses pH slower.
In the UltraStream we are using alkaline calcium and magnesium that contributes to the alkalinity of the water, and a reaction of the water awith the special Japanese magnesium media that concentrates molecular hydrogen in the water over and above the H2 in the H2O. Asa result it’s been tested to almost 4 x the H2 of a $4000 electric water ionizer.
It’s this difference between alkaline and pH that causes the strips to be inaccurate when testing the water. We use drops to test our water, and strips to test our body pH.

It’s pretty simple really. Most water supplies are already alkaline.
So why are you paying premium dollars for bottled alkaline water – in plastic?
Yes, we’ve all accepted that drinking alkaline water was good for us and the metastudy we have on our website proves it.. but no-one asked about the water they already drink from their home tap and whether drinking $5 worth of bottled water (sent from Italy to Australia or America) a day will actually restore our alkaline balance.
So here’s the truth. It won’t! The best way to restore the alkaline minerals used up by our bodies in counteracting our acid overload is simple. Replace them in quantities sufficient to restore balance.
Sounds so simple, and it is. Yes, alkaline water will help, as will alkalizing foods, but for my money, taking the actual minerals in their original form is the obvious answer. That’s why every morning I take a glass of UltraStream water, and add a teaspoon of Alkaline Booster. That way I have my molecular hydrogen and my alkaline minerals aplenty.

We know now that molecular hydrogen is the most important ‘secret ingredient’ in water ionizer water, and that the higher the H2 content of the water we consume, the higher the beneficial effect.
It’s early days in the story of molecular hydrogen and so there are some people claiming H2 without even testing for it. I watched an interview of Dr Ohno from Japan, leading H2 scientist who laughed as he related that most molecular hydrogen device makers don’t even own a test for H2!

We now have our own H2 test meter, imported from Japan. So we took the opportunity of doing the test plus talking about why ORP is not an antioxidant.
For many years we thought that the milky tiny bubbles that appeared in our glass of water from our electric ionizer was a good thing. In those days we thought it meant ‘microclustering’. Now we know it’s molecular hydrogen. But is it a good thing that we see all these bubbles? Here’s what Molecular Hydrogen Foundation‘s Biochemist Tyler LeBaron says:
DISSOLVED HYDROGEN VS. UNDISSOLVED HYDROGEN
HYDROGEN GAS IN THE WATER
The manner in which hydrogen gas is dissolved in the water has an effect on its stability and rate of exsolution (coming out of solution) and dissipation. Hydrogen gas can exist in water as fully dissolved gaseous solutes, colloidal and suspension forms, as well as large macrobubbles that exit almost immediately. There are many things to consider when discussing hydrogen in water including macro, micro and nano-bubbles, zeta potential, nucleation, solvation, Ostwald ripening, bubble coalescence, ionic strength, and other factors that affect solubility and half-life.
However, it is important to consider that simply bubbling hydrogen gas into water or producing it in water (e.g. metallic magnesium, electrolysis via water ionizers, etc.), does not necessarily mean that the water will contain a saturated level or even a therapeutic level of hydrogen gas. Indeed, some water ionizers are able to produce a high alkaline pH, and thus by default “produce” hydrogen gas, but the concentration of hydrogen gas in the water may be less than 0.05 ppm.
A great example of undissolved hydrogen can be seen with the “lighter demo”, in which a flame is held near the alkaline output hose of some “water ionizers” and a “crackling” sound can be heard along with small visible sparks as the hydrogen gas ignites. But, the hydrogen gas that ignites is only the “undissolved” hydrogen gas, which immediately evaporates into the air, thus offering no therapeutic value. Therefore, the “crackling” sound that can be heard with the “lighter demo” only indicates that hydrogen gas was produced via electrolysis, but the amount dissolved may actually be below the therapeutic level.
“MILKY” LIKE WATER & BUBBLES
Undissolved hydrogen gas can also be seen in some cases with conventional alkaline water ionizer where the water looks “milky” or “foggy” due to all the large hydrogen gas bubbles. Therefore, just because a water looks milky or you can see many bubbles in the water does not indicate that the water has a high concentration of molecular hydrogen. In fact, the actual concentration may even be below the detection/therapeutic level.
Conventional alkaline water ionizers were developed decades before the importance of hydrogen gas was known, thus their design was optimized to produce alkaline water not dissolved hydrogen gas. In fact, some water ionizers may produce very high alkaline water, but with no detectable amounts of hydrogen gas. This is also observed in many water ionizers that may produce an adequate level of hydrogen gas when the electrodes and hoses are clean, but after calcium builds up within the machine, the level of hydrogen gas can fall below the detection limit (this may take a few days to weeks or months depending on the source water and usage). This fact also underscores the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance, with different machines requiring different maintenance programs. This also explains the frequent observation experienced by alkaline ionized water users, that when they clean their machine the water “feels fresh and therapeutic like when the machine was brand-new”. Importantly, one cannot rely on ORP readings to verify that their water has high hydrogen gas levels. You can have a -700 mV reading while having over 1 ppm of H2, or less than 0.05 ppm of H2. In conclusion, there is an important relationship between the total amount of hydrogen gas produced and the total amount of dissolved hydrogen gas. The higher the percent of hydrogen gas that gets dissolved the more efficient the system. Thus, if a system were fully optimized you would not see any hydrogen bubbles or hear any crackling sound during the lighter demo. Although the presence of bubbles or the crackling sound doesn’t mean the water contains high hydrogen levels, it also doesn’t mean that it contains low hydrogen levels.

I just watched the latest episode of the excellent series of ‘The Truth About Cancer’.
In it, Ty Bollinger interviewed the vendors of two forms of enhanced water. One was ‘MRET Water’, the other was Hydrogen rich water.
Over the last sixteen years I have seen so many new water systems come and go. Magnetized water, Zeta water, super ionized water, microclustered water, BEV water, Pristine Water, Emoto water and now MRET water.
I admit to the fact that I was under the impression that some of these waters really did have measurable positive effect. (Note: ‘measurable’).
Microclustering; The Most Common Claim
The supplier of our first electronic water ionizer told me with a very straight face that the water from his machine was ‘microclustered’. I loved the water and for the first time in my life was able to drink water without bloating. So.. naturally, I assumed this was from the microclustered nature of the water. It took a decade for me to realise that what really caused lack of bloating was a simple body feedback system. The water from the ionizer had a high pH. My mouth’s inbuilt pH meter registered it, and according to my natural design, alerted my pyloric valve at the bottom of my stomach to open, thus preventing my stomach from collecting the high pH water with accompanying stomach acid neutralisation. Clever body! Dumb me.
I consulted with Tyler LeBaron, biochemist on the same point. Does water ‘microcluster? And what does microcluster really mean? We get a picture of water molecules forming smaller than usual clusters or matrixes, but does water do this? Yes. And No. Tyler explained that water sitting in a glass is not ‘still’ as it may appear. In fact, as Tyler put it, it’s a maelstrom of constantly forming, breaking down and reforming of molecular and atomic connections, all happening at not microseconds or nanoseconds but at FEMTOSECONDS! So the idea of water remaining still long enough for it to be permanently formed in an ‘ideal’ smaller matrix is well. optimistic to say the least.
So.. how do we explain the many testimonials we have from drinkers of these waters?
Well. and many people won’t like this.. placebo effect is still the most healing force on Earth. Give someone enough optimism about a lifestyle or health regimen change and it has been conclusively, scientifically proven that their health will improve over anyone taking the same steps without the mental encouragement. Placebo people always believe that what they did in terms of health regimen change caused their health improvement.. because they cab’t see that they were in placebo’s clutch. Why would they? To them, they did A, and B was the result.
But… surely the weight of numbers of testimonials would prove this wrong, right?
It’s my observation that the internet may be the greatest health change vehicle we’ve ever known. prior to the net, we could not access the stories form others so easily, and so we relied – mostly – on what our medico told us. That’s the good part of the net. The not-so-good part is that most testimonials we read about any product have been carefully sifted to remove any less than positiove ones. So our irrational mind takes the easy path and ‘decides’ that based on ‘available evidence’ this product will work for me.
Never underestimate the power of your mind.
I have not one but two business associates, each of whom have invented a water system that requires no filters and yet, we are asked to believe, ‘neutralises’ all contaminants. Their websites carry many testimonials from people attributing improved health to a device that fundamentally ‘turbulates’ the water before they drink it. There’s been a Korean water jug that ‘vortexises‘ water and carries a similar number of testimonials. Are they all placebo? And.. are they representative of all users’ experience or only the ones who chose to or were asked to give a testimonial to the vendor?
I don’t have the answers to these questions but after 16 years what I have developed is what I would call a healthy skepticism. This has came from having to put my own ideas about our water ionizers under the magnifying glass of science vs. hype. I had to realise that I wanted to believe some of the more er.. esoteric ideas given to me by my Koream manufacturer. And.. as I opened up to more science and less conjecture, I began to see just how prevalent (and successful) this ‘halftruth’ strategy is!
One company promoting microclustered water sold $165,000,000 worth of product last year.
Having said all this, I leave the decision to you. Perhaps all I can suggest about MRET water is to ask yourself how much you WANT to believe in MRET Water as the ‘Truth About Cancer‘. If I WANT to believe it, odds are that I am not making a clear decision and have already activated my placebo mind.
Now….. to ‘Alkaline’ water.
I am certainly an expert on alkaline water. We sold our water ionizers for all of those years on the benfits of drinking alkaline water. I wrote a book (The Untold Truth About The Cause of Disease) on alkaline diet and water. I designed my own Alkaline Foods Chart. I taled about, read, researched, lectured. I guess that makes me an ‘expert’.
Just after Ty spoke to the MRET Water man he also spoke to a friend of mine, Paul Barratiero. We met Paul earlier this year when he visited Australia, setting up his sales network for his water ionizer. Paul’s electric ionizer is about as good a product as there is in electronic water ionizers and sells for about $2400.
But here’s what I find interesting. Paul is a smart guy. He knows, as I do, that the water from his device has a high pH but NOT high alkalinity. It doesn’t add alkaline minerals. It passes the water through an electrolysis cell which affects the pH, not the alkalinity. He only talks about hydrogen. Alkalinity is so.. passe!
At the same time, the biggest (by far) vendor of this type of system still claims that their machine’s alkaline water properties are important. So who is right?
Well, as Paul said on ‘The Truth About Cancer‘ there’s ample science to prove the therapeutic properties of hydrogen rich water. And.. just to add to the mix, I undertook a metastudy some years ago on alkaline water around the world and there’s certainly no doubt in my mind that alkaline water is better to drink than neutral or acid water. One study of 100,000 death certificates in Finland stood out. 100,000 certificates were analysed by place of residence, and then these were correlated with the hardness (calcium/magnesium content) of the water the former person had consumed while alive. Overwhelmingly, the people who drank calcium/magnesium rich water from their taps live longer and experienced better health.
But.. please note.. I said ALKALINE Water, not high pH water.
OK. So it appears that there is sufficient science to say with conviction, (free of placebo bias), that both alkaline water and hydrogen rich water will support health and longevity. There are many other possibilities suggested by the 400+ scientific studies of hydrogen rich water, including all major disease types, but.. as far, no large scale double blind studies. So.. it still comes down to YOU researching and understanding if only to overcome your need to believe.
So what about this high pH water?
If you are clear about the difference, fine. If not, go back to my previous para and get it clear. But here goes again…
- Alkaline Water contains alkaline minerals.
- High pH water contains molecular hydrogen (H2)
- Alkaline water MAY contain molecular hydrogen (H2) because magnesium, an alkaline mineral reacts with H2O to make H2.
This process occurs until the magnesium is exhausted.
Now.. NONE (Magnetized water, Zeta water, super ionized water, microclustered water, BEV water, Pristine Water, Emoto water and now MRET water) of the waters discussed at the beginning of this article are either alkaline or high in H2. Am I saying they don’t have an effect on health? No, I’m not.
ANY improvement in the quality of our drinking water is one of the best investments one can make in future health.
But .. and let’s face it.. this is why you have watched ‘The Truth About Cancer’. You want to know the best water for you to avert cancer.
I’ve received many emails and calls about the video. And one common thing came through. Everyone noticed that Ty Bollinger owned one of Paul Barattiero’s Water ionizers. This, it seemed, was what they wanted to hear more than all the techno facts and figures. So their decision was this:
1. Ty Bollinger drinks Paul Barratiero’s water.
2. Paul Barratiero’s water must be the best.
Now.. I am in a privileged position here. I opened up Australia and the company Paul began his career in water ionizers in the US to water ionizers. Paul gets his ionizers from the same company that made our water ionizers.
So here goes with a direct comparison based on what I have learned about getting the best water possible.
1. Alkaline Water
You can buy alkaline water in bottles nationally. It’s tap or purified water with added alkaline minerals. Or.. if you live in a ‘hard water’ area (most of the US and Europe) you can drink from the tap or a basic filter and get the benefits of the millions of people referenced in my metastudy. But many vendors of devices using electrolysis to create high pH water make the claim of giving alkaline water. They don’t, or if they do, the calcium level is low. If these devices are used in hard water areas, they often have major calcium accretion problems because calcium, normally in solution, becomes ionically ‘sticky’ and drops into suspension as its pH is changed.
- You can make your own alkaline water with alkaline electrolytes.
- You can drink alkaline water from your tap if you have ‘hard’ water.
- You can buy alkaline water in bottles.
- You can buy a water filter that elutes alkaline minerals as it filters.
2. Hydrogen Water
Let’s quickly talk about the best method of getting H2. The best is inhalation. But.. it’s not easy. We are talking about a gas that, when mixed with air, becoming highly explosive and I know of no approved device to deliver H2 gas safely. The vast majority of scientific studies relate to hydrogen infused water. At atmospheric pressure at sea level, we can only get 1.6 parts per million in water, no matter what the means. H2 quickly escapes if more is added. The parts per million test is what we have arrived at as a definition of quality or effectiveness of hydrogen rich water.
From our research we have been able to link the strength of the H2 in a single ‘dose’ to beneficial effect.
So if 1.6 ppm is the maximum possible at sea level, what do the various systems manage?
None of the string of inventions mentioned at the start of this article give any H2.
Paul’s gives a consistent 0.8 ppm. More expensive models give a little more.
- Bottled water gives none.
- Kangen water varies from 0.3 ppm (tested at AquaSciences LLC) depending on how clean the electrolysis plates are.
- Other systems give 1.0 ppm.
- My own invention, the UltraStream, has been measured at 1.1 ppm by Tyler LeBaron’s AquaSciences LLC test facility.
- I LOVE H2 tablets dissolved in water in a sealed bottle give above 2ppm.
Portable water bottles using media we have sourced from Japan give 1.4ppm. (Still in test phase)

High pH Water
This is water from an electronic water ionizer, which uses electrolysis to alter pH. remember, it is not necessarily high in alkaline minerals because the system does not ADD alkaline minerals and only concentrates the minerals already in your water. Now here’s a recent lesson we got. Traditionally, water from an electric ionizer was assessed for quality by using a pH test kit and an ORP meter. ORP is a measure of the electrical charge in water. It has been commonly quoted as proof of the antioxidant effect of this water. It isn’t. It is what it is; an electrical charge, positive or negative. If it is positive, the water has an oxidising power. It can rust things. If negative, it can donate electrons to the body. But to claim it is an antioxidant is a stretch.
The antioxidant effect of water from an electric ionizer is related directly to the level of H2 in the output water. Nothing else.
Our UltraStream is different. It doesn’t use electrolysis. It uses magnesium to create H2. And it has alkaline magnesium and calcium in the filter so it is a true alkaline water.

Our UltraStream has been tested to 3500 litres by Griffith University laboratory for (among many other things) fluoride reduction.
We use an NSF approved non-eluting (it doesn’t leach into your water) US supplied Activated Alumina. It’s THE best we could find anywhere in the world, in line with all other filter media in our UltraStream.
Yet.. we still have some competitors trying to tell people that using activated alumina means you may get aluminium in your water, frightening them with fears of Alzheimers and anything else they can think of. So let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they really don’t understand what alumina is.
The first thing we all learned in high school was the difference between an element (atom) and compound (molecule). But did we remember that well enough to remember it? Obviously not for some people.
Point #1. The difference between an atom and a molecule.
Salt is, as we know, safe to consume. But if we were told to consume chlorine we’d say no.
But.. chlorine is one of two parts of salt! Sodium is the other.
Sodium is an atom.
Chlorine is an atom.
Sodium chloride is a molecule, bound together ionically so it isn’t poisonous,
Aluminium is an atom.
Activated alumina is a molecule.
Point #2 What activated alumina actually is in nature
Now.. what if I told you we added ultrapure semiprecious gems rubies and sapphires to your UltraStream and used them to reduce fluoride? I’m guessing you’d be pretty impressed, right? Well.. that’s exactly what we are doing.
Look at this from Wikipedia.
Activated alumina is manufactured from aluminium hydroxide by dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material; this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 square metres/g. The compound is used as a desiccant (to keep things dry by absorbing water from the air) and as a filter of fluoride, arsenic and selenium in drinking water. It is made of aluminium oxide (alumina; Al2O3), the same chemical substance as sapphire and ruby (but without the impurities that give those gems their color). It has a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio, due to the many “tunnel like” pores that it has.”

There’s not another water ionizer in the world that has been tested to this degree. It’s obvious why: other methods of fluoride removal in water filters can be sold using an ‘as new’ laboratory test, without showing the rapid decrease in reduction each day you continue to use your filter.
If you’re looking at a water filter, watch for ‘Up To 99%” on the advertising and always ask for an independent LIFE OF FILTER test done in the country you are in, not Asia!
In every case I have seen of people attacking AA, their competing product hes been using a cheaper method. As in life, when you buy a water filter you ‘gets what you pays for’.
Most Calcium / Magnesium supplements are supplied in a ratio of 2:1.
Recommendations vary from a 4:1 to a 1:1 calcium to magnesium ratio. Some vendors and practitioners claim that calcium and magnesium oppose each other at the intracellular level, and therefore low magnesium intake causes high calcium storage, or calcification.Others maintain that magnesium is needed for proper calcium absorption, and that low magnesium intake can be responsible for low calcium levels.
Is there a Correct Answer – is there an “optimal” Calcium / Magnesium Ratio?
Some people -especially Australians and Americans – retain far too much calcium and constantly struggle to gain magnesium requirements. Others suffer from magnesium overload and need to supplement larger amounts of calcium to overcome calcium deficiencies. Mineral ratios can also be affected by neurological disturbances such as following spinal alignment problems.
If zinc is on the high side, and potassium low, then taking extra magnesium will usually lower calcium. Magnesium supports zinc, but lowers potassium, which is a calcium synergist.
Alternatively, if potassium is higher, and zinc lower, we may find that taking magnesium will push calcium higher as well.
Vitamin D increases calcium, phosphorus, and – to a lesser degree – magnesium absorption.
If calcium is above-normal, but magnesium is even higher than calcium, there’s a good chance that you may eventually experience symptoms of a calcium deficiency.
Low levels of manganese, phosphorus, zinc, nickel and Vitamin C can encourage an increase in intracellular calcium ratio, and may eventually create a risk for calcification.
Generally speaking, alkaline water sold over the counter is simply water in a bottle with added calcium carbonate, often at similar levels to Calcium in your home water. Calcium in water is certainly assimilated better than through food, but only an analysis of the Calcium levels to learn just how much water equals a recommended daily allowance will tell you whether the Calcium is having any effect. Most water supplies and many alkaline water bottling companies brands have such a low concentration of calcium that you’d need to drink many gallons of water to get your RDA.
…have been wrongly depicted as separating the alkaline and acid ions in their electrolysis process, but test results show this to be wrong. Electrolysis creates hydrogen rich water, and this has been interpreted as alkaline water. It is not. It is high hydrogen water that a pH Meter will react to. Less experienced users of the pH meter make the wrong assumption that this means the water is alkaline.A natural non electric water ionizer may or may not have both magnesium and calcium in their media. Of the number on the market, all will ‘read alkaline’ in pH, but very few actually produce molecular hydrogen. These units are giving a high pH reading because they are adding alkaline minerals to the output water. Always ask for test results, preferably over the life of the filter.What we are finding is that there is a significant difference in how people understand alkaline water. Many water ionizer vendors don’t even know that their water isn’t high alkaline but is high in beneficial molecular hydrogen. Always ask to see the test results.

Almost everybody who starts our New Alkaline diet has to deal with cravings. I’m sure even Elle McPherson went through them.
Unless you never ate sugar in your life, you’ve had cravings. Yet… knowing that it’s a common problem doesn’t make it any easier for you.
We’ve found that these tactics help a lot. We are asking a lot to give up your ‘crutch’ your ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ so the least we can do is show you what we have learned about overcoming cravings.
There are a few tactics we have found that work for almost everybody.
5 Crave Stopping Hacks
1. Sleep Enough.
It sounds like an odd first hack, but short on zeds does make you crave junk food. It’s also a sure way to make sure that you don’t have enough willpower to resist because you feel like well… crap..
Without sufficient sleep, 2 things happen.
a) You overproduce cortisol. This makes you hungrier, particularly for sugar.
b) Your body sends less glucose to your prefrontal cortex , your impulse-control center. You have less control over your actions (and your cravings).
How important is sleep? Try living without it.
2. Eat Enough Healthy Fats.
We usually crave non-NAD (New Alkaline Diet) foods because we’re just not eating enough, especially when first starting on the diet. Remember that you’re cutting out a lot of the nasty starches and sugars, so you need a replacement. The health-friendliest and most satisfying way to replace it is with good fats, such as coconut oil, pastured beef fat, avocado fat etc.
Make sure that you eat enough food at every meal. If this doesn’t seem a problem,Sounds like it shouldn’t be a problem, but when you’re changing diet, you often under eat without even knowing.
3. Avoid Snacking.
If you are already a snacker you’ve trained your body like a puppy to beg for food at regular hours. Continue to snack regularly, and you’ll continue to be reminded snack at those times because your body will expect it.
I know, I know. You don’t like this suggestion. just remember the AA maxim. One day at a time.
Once you say no to snackaddiction (and begin eating only nutritious NAD foods), your hunger pangs will cease because you’re getting off the up-down mood cycle so evident in over-acidic people.
4. Drink More Water: alkaline hydrogen rich pure water if possible..
Drinking has the same problems as eating. Being dehydrated supercharges your cravings. You don’t need to drink gallons, but definitely make sure you drink water regularly.
5. Go Cold Turkey.
There’s no easy way to say this. Just do it. We admit we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable. Face it, Kiddo. If you could have changed your diet, YOU WOULD HAVE! Sugar is by far the most addictive part of non-NAD foods. It isn’t easy to give up processed sugar cold turkey, but if you can do it, your cravings will be much easier to control sooner rather than later. I can absolutely say that my whole food preferences, servings size and enjoyment have all changed as I gave up on sugar (and grains and acidic foods!)

Unlike the many years when we had almost no science to support the claim that drinking alkaline water, now we have hundreds of studies available on over a hundred different health modalities. So every new study helps us to understand more. This one is enlightening because there is a constant debate about whether the blood can change pH. Water ionizer salesmen trot out the old claim that5 you can die if your pH drops below 7 – which is true – but the other camp claims that this could only happen if the multiple backup systems your body calls upon fail first.
This study demonstrates that blood pH can indeed change given the right support, but not because you haev gone on an alkaliene diet, or drunk gallons of high alkaline mineral water. It changed pH because study participants drank high H2 water.

Possible appliance of effective and safe alkalizing agent in the treatment of metabolic acidosis could be of particular interest to humans experiencing an increase in plasma acidity, such as exercise-induced acidosis.
In the present study we tested the hypothesis that the daily oral intake of 2L of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) for 14 days would increase arterial blood alkalinity at baseline and post-exercise as compared with the placebo. This study was a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 52 presumably healthy physically active male volunteers.
Twenty-six participants received HRW and 26 a placebo (tap water) for 14 days. Arterial blood pH, partial pressure for carbon dioxide (pCO2), and bicarbonates were measured at baseline and postexercise at the start (day 0) and at the end of the intervention period (day 14).
Intake of HRW significantly increased fasting arterial blood pH by 0.04 (95% confidence interval; 0.01 – 0.08; p < 0.001), and postexercise pH by 0.07 (95% confidence interval; 0.01 – 0.10; p = 0.03) after 14 days of intervention.
Fasting bicarbonates were significantly higher in the HRW trial after the administration regimen as compared with the preadministration (30.5 ± 1.9 mEq/L vs. 28.3 ± 2.3 mEq/L;p < 0.0001).
No volunteers withdrew before the end of the study, and no participant reported any vexatious side effects of supplementation. These results support the hypothesis that HRW administration is safe and may have an alkalizing effect in young physically active men.

We finally met Tyler LeBaron today. It was his first visit to Australia, even though it felt like old friends meeting.
