Our normal blood pH of the body is 7.35 and this will be maintained at all costs.
If it falls, the body will take bicarbonate from the blood stream, or calcium from the bones and teeth to compensate.
If this goes on long enough, your teeth and bones will turn to mush. Before ‘mushing’, bones become brittle and break easily.
This is usually a sure sign of osteoporosis, as I discovered when I fell off my son’s electric skateboard and broke my leg. You may also begin losing tooth enamel.. or you’ll simply lose your teeth or enrich your dentist with a mouthful of crowns. Again, I know. My dentures attest to the power of a daily guzzle of CocaCola as a high school kid. I was the Coke guzzling champion!
And of course, many scientists assert that diseases like cancer, bacterial infections and yeasts are related to an acidic body.
There are hundreds if not thousands of websites talking about pH balance now. When we introduced the concept to Australia in 2000 the word ‘alkaline’ just wasn’t seen. Now it’s the choice of much-publicised celebs, and the vast majority of these websites basically agree with or copy each other, saying that excess acidity causes yeast infections and that the simple answer is a high alkaline diet.
Is it that easy? Well.. not exactly. Certainly our immune system performs best in an alkaline environment. And in this environment, beneficial flora are happier.
But this is not the full answer.
We now know that the connection between candida albicans and an alkaline body is not as clear as we had hoped. Candida flourishes in an acidic environment as low as pH 2, but it also exists happily in a body pH of 8- healthily alkaline.
Yes, our body does prefer being slightly alkaline. It’s default 7.35 is enforced with some quite strong support systems. Getting a higher pH therefore, is virtually impossible. We can therefore say that Candida survives in any pH the blood is capable of.
Meat, dairy and grains are on the acidic side. Most Fruits and vegetables test alkaline. Almost every website will advise you to follow the 80/20 rule of ingesting 80% alkaline forming foods, and 20% acid forming foods.
Meat inevitably gets a bad rap – often because the website owner is a vegetarian, But meat has an offsetting effect that no one seems to want to mention.
Meat protein stimulates the release of the hormone insulin. (Growth factor or IGF-1). Increasing IGF-1 triggers bone growth and mineralization – so there’s an incredibly important role for meat if you agree that a major purpose of the alkaline diet is maintenance of our bones and teeth. As a long term vegetarian, when I fell off the skateboard i was forced to accept the unpalatable observation that 12 years of alkaline diet had NOT given me strong bones. I was forced to take a broader view and make changes. I cut out all sugar, reduced carbs as much as I possibly could, and made the huge decision to eat grassfed beef for its unparalled array of amino acids and its Vitamin K2. I reduced fructose laden fruits and kept up the dark leafy greens. As a result, my annual Dexascan showed me my bone strength was improving.
I understand many people will want to disagree with this, and I honour their ethical standpoint, but I have researched this for over 3 years, and I believe that early man was vegetarian by necessity with meat as a luxury. The paleo man carved up the bison he had killed and the tribe converged, seeking the fat and organs before the meat. They knew innately that this was the best the bison could contribute to their survival odds.
Since grains have entered the scene they have (for the most part) displaced vegetables. The result is obvious. Most of us now tend to eat an acidic diet.
Today, grains these days account for about 38% of Americans diets. So our acid loading has dramatically changed post grain-era.
It’s my opinion that ethics aside, when eating to combat candida, meat ‘s ability to stimulate the release of the hormone insulin and IGF-1 means it has a place in serious health endeavors.
Dr Robert O Young once wrote an article on the amount of Kale one should eat a day to achieve pH balance. I nearly fell over when I saw the mountain of kale I’d be buying weekly!
Grains, however are still the big nasty – especially wheat, which contains sulphuric acid. Yes, Battery acid.
No, bread isn’t going to burn you like battery acid. Wheat contains diluted amounts, but there is no escape from the truth that if you eat it, consuming green vegetables will go some way to offsetting the acidity.
If you are thinking of switching to oat bread, be aware that oats have even more sulphuric acid than wheat!
Way back in 2000, Dr. Linda Frassetto, Todd, Morris and Sebastian published a study on the worldwide incidence of hip fractures in elderly women. The conclusion still holds true.
With a 50/50 meat to vegetable intake of 1:1 the incidence of hip fractures was 200 out of 100,000.
In women that ate a vegetable to meat ratio between 2:1 and 5:1, hip fractures were less than 10 out of
If Dr Frasetto and her team had performed this study using the SAD (Standard American Diet 1/3 meat, 1/3 grains and 1/3 vegetables) the results would have been even worse.
Our easy access to grains via our modern food system, and our reduced vegetable consumption has resulted in 53% of women with a fractured hip by age 50. Men? 21%.
If you cast back in your memory, you’ll most likely remember a family member that died shortly after suffering hip fracture.
This is a TERRIBLE statistic.
One Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study of over 9400 women discovered that bone density starts decline in women at 25 and men at 40. At age 40 the women are zooming ahead. At age 70, both sexes begin an acceleration of bone loss. By age 80, 97% of women have osteoporosis.
It’s not just wheat.
Many grains cause blood sugar level spikes. Sugar, of course, causes our body to move from ketosis (fat burning) to glycation, where sugar becomes the fast fuel, the supercharged alternative to the traditional source of energy. That’s why we call it a ‘sugar high’.
Glycation is the result of the bonding of a protein or lipid molecule with a sugar molecule. Our cartilege is an early casualty because it is very susceptible to glycation.
Cartilege cells simply lose fexibility.
We know it as Arthritis. Perhaps it should be called ‘Grainitis’.
Go here to access a simple way to alkalize without filling your shopping cart with kale.
In my opinion, the perfect alkaline diet or for that matter the
best diet to follow, would be one consisting of 30 to 40% meat
and the rest fruits and vegetables. Ditch the grains, especially
What is “Ionized Water”?
From Ian Blair Hamilton, Founder, Alkaway
It’s really a meaningless term. Yes, it is possible for water to contain dissolved ions (electrically-charged atoms or molecules), but that’s something else again. Almost all waters we find in nature acquire ions such as calcium and bicarbonate as they pass through our wear down rocks and sediments. Even the purest rainwater gains some hydrogen- and bicarbonate ions as it passes through carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Pure water consists as we all know – almost entirely of H2O molecules. These are loosely bound in a network-like structure, but please, don’t even mention ‘microclustered’ one of the favourite sales terms used by MLM water ionizer selllers. Individual molecules in water are serious ‘swingers’. They are constantly changing partners. Water molecules exhibit a very slight tendency to dissociate (“ionize”) into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions: (H2O > H+ + OH-) but this reaction is severely limited by the fact that the reverse of this reaction is much more rapid, so that on the average, only about two out of every billion H2O molecules is dissociated. And we are talking about reforming and ‘swinging’ fast.. a matter of femtoseconds. Changing so fast, any idea of structure is a bit of a laugh in scientific circles. No electrical device or chemical additive is capable of increasing these ion concentrations in pure water above this very minute level which is so small that for most practical purposes pure water can be considered to be ion-free, as evidenced by the fact that it will not conduct an electric current.
Acidic and alkaline water
All water and all aqueous solutions contain both H+ and OH– ions. If the quantity of H+ exceeds that of the OH-, the water is termed acidic. If there are more OH- ions than H+, the water is alkaline. Pure water, containing equal numbers of both ions, is termed neutral.
Chemists express the degree of acidity or alkalinity on the pH scale. This runs from 0 to 14. Acidic solutions have pH values of less than 7, alkaline solutions more than 7. Pure water, being neutral, has a pH of exactly 7. Each unit on the pH scale represents a hundred-fold change in the ratio of the two kinds of ions; for example, if the pH is 8, there are 100 times as many OH- ions than H+ ions (that is, [H+] = 10-8, [OH-] = 10-6.)
Regardless of whether a water is acidic or alkaline, it always contains equal numbers of positive and negative electric charges. Since ‘alkaline’ water contains an excess of OH- ions, it must also contain some other kind of positive ion in addition to H+ in order to equalize the opposite charges. This extra positive ion is almost always a metal ion such as sodium, calcium or magnesium. Similarly, an acidic water must always contain negative ions in addition to OH-; the most common of these is bicarbonate HCO3-. This means that waters whose pH differs from 7 are never “pure” in the chemical sense.
“Ionized water” is one of many products and panaceas that the wonky wellness industry flogs presents to the very large segment of the general public that lacks the scientific background to distinguish scientific fact from pseudo scientific hype when the two are closely intertwined. What most of these treatment devices actually sell are grossly overpriced electrical devices that purport to produce “ionized” and alkaline water by the process of electrolysis.
The bottom line when it comes to ionized water…
“Ionized water” is nothing more than sales fiction. It is meaningless to chemists.
Most potable water is simply too unconductive to undergo significant electrolysis, and that’s why an electric water ionizer needs water with a fair amount of mineral ions in it; to facilitate electrolysis. To suimmarize, pure water can never be alkaline or acidic, nor can it be made so by electrolysis.
Groundwater containing metal ions such as calcium and magnesium can be rendered slightly alkaline by electrolysis. A pH test will show a high pH, but this does not correlate to higher levels of alkaline minerals in the water. One could say it’s a sort of ‘artificial’ alkalinity.
The idea that one must consume alkaline water to neutralize the effects of acidic foods is a little ambitious. The body is subject to and uses many factors to maintain its blood pH level of 7.35. If the water we drink has alkaline minerals in it, of course these minerals will be added to the body’s storehouse (buffer) of alkaline minerals, just as alkaline minerals in our food are also added. On the other side of the equation, we have a 24 hour pH balancing system. It’s called the breath.
Most claims about the health benefits of drinking alkaline water are just not supported by any volume of scientific evidence. Yes, as we have said, it has an effect. But the effect is so negligible that if you had to drink acidic rain water then nothing really terrible will ensue – contrary to what the electric ionizer vendors will tell you.
The most negative point of most electrolysis devices is their big box store-basic filtration. It’s simply amazing that people buy a $4000 water ionizer and get a vary basic filter. They are generally worthless for filtering water for health enhancement, removal of common impurities, disinfection, and scale control.
So.. is there an alternative?
From what we’ve explained so far, the major drawbacks of electrolysis water ionizers are:
- Ability to alkalize (add alkaline minerals to water)
I should add to this list the problem of excess calcium in source water. Vast areas of the world have ‘hard’ water supplies and the biggest name and most expensive water ionizers need weekly 20 minute water-wasting cleanses to maintain performance. Only certain electric units have made any advance in this area.
But there’s one other amazing fact the big name water ionizer companies are still ignoring. it’s a design ‘flaw’ that turns out to be a design benefit. And – although it’s hard to believe – the big companies resisted it strenuously,. even making legal threats to the discoverer of this amazing benefit. No matter how often we talk about it here on this website and in our videos, there are vendors ‘out there’ still claiming that their high pH water is ‘alkaline water’.
1. “Alkaline water” is water with added alkaline minerals. It will give a high pH readings on a pH meter.
2. ‘High pH water is water with a high level of hydrogen atoms (ions). It can be artificially made to seem like alkaline water by using electrolysis.
What’s the difference?
Alkaline water contributes alkaline minerals to the body which can be used as a ‘buffer’ to counteract and neutralise excess acids. High pH water may have little to no alkaline minerals in it as therefore has little to no capability of acting as a buffer in the body.
Dominic Spiers runs our Alkaline Diet discussion Group on Facebook.
Here’s his latest alkaline diet concoction; a might alkalizer for people without their own water ionizer.
Juice of 4 lemons. then top up with water (1 part water to 1 part juice)….then add a tsp of bicarb and it will fizz. It tastes a bit like fizzy lemonade. add the bicarb in small increments otherwise the fizz might overflow out of the container!
Our lime tree is groaning with fruit right now so it will be lime instead of lemons for us!
Firstly, we need to look at whether we are talking about ‘alkaline food’ or alkaline-supporting food.
There are very, very few alkaline foods, but many foods that support us to alkalize in the body.
This covers many interpretations, from the production of sodium bicarbonate in the stomach, to improved support against acidifying inflammation.
So I’m suggesting water cress is firmly placed in group two.
Watercress: Carcinogen Chaser.
Watercress is an often-overlooked, leafy green food source. It’s a close cousin of mustard greens, cabbage, and arugula. And.. it’s a powerful anti-carcinogen. It can help starve tumours of essential blood and oxygen significantly inhibiting the activation of carcinogens.
Many natural health writers score it as among the top 36 foods that help cleanse our entire body. We can give our liver a big boost with the cleansing action of watercress. It helps to release enzymes in the liver that clean it out and help rid it of toxic buildup. It contains glucosinolate compounds, which have been found to have anti-cancer properties.
A phase II clinical trial demonstrated and presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) showed that watercress extract taken multiple times a day can significantly inhibit cancer.
The trial showed that the watercress extract detoxifies environmental carcinogens and toxins found in cigarette smoke. (It also discovered that the effect is stronger in people who lack certain genes involved in processing carcinogens).
Researchers found that the compound, phenylethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), (that’s where it gets that unique peppery taste), can interfere with the function of a protein that plays a critical role in cancer development.
“Cigarette smokers are at far greater risk than the general public for developing lung cancer, and helping smokers quit should be our top cancer prevention priority in these people,” said Jian-Min Yuan, M.D., Ph.D., associate director of the UPCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Science and an epidemiologist with Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health. “But nicotine is very addictive, and quitting can take time and multiple relapses. Having a tolerable, nontoxic treatment, like watercress extract, that can protect smokers against cancer would be an incredibly valuable tool in our cancer-fighting arsenal.”
Dr. Yuan, who also is Pitt’s Arnold Palmer Endowed Chair in Cancer Prevention, and his colleagues enrolled 82 cigarette smokers in the randomized clinical trial. The participants either took 10 milligrams of watercress extract mixed in 1 milliliter of olive oil four times a day for a week or they took a placebo. Each group of participants then had a one week “wash-out” period where they didn’t take anything and then switched so that those getting the placebo now received the extract. They all continued their regular smoking habits throughout the trial.
In one week, the watercress extract reduced activation of the carcinogen known as nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone in the smokers by an average of 7.7 percent. It increased detoxification of benzene by 24.6 percent and acrolein by 15.1 percent, but had no effect on crotonaldehyde. All the substances are found in cigarette smoke.
Participants who lacked two genes involved in a genetic pathway that helps the antioxidant glutathione remove carcinogens and toxicants from the body saw an even bigger benefit to taking the watercress extract, which increased their detoxification of benzene by 95.4 percent, acrolein by 32.7 percent and crotonaldehyde by 29.8 percent.
A phase III clinical trial in hundreds of people must be performed before the treatment could be recommended for smokers, and Dr. Yuan warned that while eating cruciferous vegetables, such as watercress and broccoli, are good for people, they are unlikely to have the same pronounced effect as the extract.
Read my article on celery yet?
And my article on the humble cucumber?
We love good news. Daniel Angelini is a new AlkaWay client in Australia, and the first thing he did with his new UltraStream and its pH kit was a few comparisons. The picture is self explanatory! Daniel emailed us and said:
“I got my UltraStream connected a couple of days ago and love it! My Brita was actually making the water more acidic! I think it would be cool for you guys to create some content on social media comparing water, either tap or bottled, to water that’s been passed through the UltraStream. The visual representation speaks for itself.
All the best!
There’s a lot to learn about alkaline water and diet. We’ve tried to put our 16 years of experience into a simple downloadable booklet called ‘The Untold Truth About Alkaline balance and Diet Click on the image to download yours free.
We recently posted about the amazing health benefits of the humble cucumber.
But what salad is complete without a crunchy celery stick?
Celery is often overlooked. many of us think of it as “crunchy water” and assume it has little nutritional value.
Oh Boy, How wrong we can be!
But I always have a problem talking about alkaline diet foods. Am I talking about the food’s ability to help my alkaline balance to be regained, or am I talking about the health benefits beyond alkalizing? It’s my humble opinion that beyond the alkalizing benefits, much of the ‘pH Miracle’ cures we read about come from the additional super-properties of these basic foods. Celery is no exception.
Celery is in the Apiaceae / Umbellerifereae family. It’s been recorded as grown as far back as 1323 BC in Egypt, Europe and the Mediterranean. When Tutankhamen was entombed, he was garlanded with celery leaf. (A bit late to get the health benefits, unfortunately!)
More than a billion pounds of celery are harvested each year in the US, primarily in Michigan and Florida. It’s used in soups, appetizers, entrees and as an addition to tuna and chicken salads. We consume as much as six pounds of celery over the course of a year. (Yes, most of it water, I admit.)
It’s a “negative calorie” food – only 16 calories per cup chopped serving.. Our body almost burns as many calories digesting it as celery itself contains.Low caloric content combined with the high-fiber definitely make celery a fabulous food for weight loss goals. It has an extremely high rate of nutrition compared to a very small amount of carbohydrates. And.. of course.. it’s also an alkaline food, helping to balance acid levels in the blood.
Celery and Your Brain
Scientists have now discovered the link between a flavinoid compound called luteolin and brain health. Older mice in a recent study retained youthful brain functioning when their diet was enriched with luteolin.
This flavonoid works throughout your entire body to fight the effects of free radicals that can speed up the cellular aging process.
Linked to a decreased risk of heart disease and cancer, it’s reasonable to say that celery (which is high in luteolin) reduces inflammation naturally. This is especially beneficial to the brain. Inflammation is believed to be a leading cause of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis.
Celery and Total Wellness
Proven carcinogen detoxifiers phthalides, coumarins and polyaceylenes found in celery enhance white blood cell effectiveness.
Pthalides lower stress hormone levels in the blood and relax muscles around the arteries. Blood vessels dilate smoothly, resulting in lower blood pressure.
The abundance of heart-healthy calcium, potassium and magnesium found in celery also regulates blood pressure. Pthalides increase the body’s secretion of bile which helps to lower cholesterol and prevent clogging of the arteries.
Inflammation is the primary cause of the pain we experience from arthritis, gout, and asthma. Coumarins found in celery control inflammation and lower swelling in and around joints. Coumarins have proven effective in lessening the severity of asthma, treating muscle pain and getting rid of migraines.
How about a Celery Smoothie
packed with vitamins, minerals and compounds that balance acidity in the blood, this vegie smoothie goes a long way toward total body health minus the fat and carbohydrates. Rinse or scrub each vegetable and trim the ends! Super easy and delicious.
2 medium carrots
2 celery stalks
5 – 6 leaves leaf lettuce
1/2 golden delicious apple
1 small beet.
Hey, we love to help people learn about the alkaline diet.
I’ve written a small book on the diet that you can download as a .pdf.
And.. if you are a newcomer to the benefits of the alkaline diet, take a look at our hugely successful New Alkaline Diet and Defence Program. It’s the most comprehensive and highly regarded program available on everything alkaline.
OK, It’s a war zone ‘down there’. Or at least a ‘postwar zone. Your elimination system has been battling with acid overload all night, and in the early hours of the morning has assembled all that nasty acid in your bladder. That’s why your first ‘pee du jour’ is your most acidic.
It’s obvious that your body has worked selflessly to get you back in balance ready for another day battling the dark acid forces.. so it’s a really good idea to begin a daily practice of supporting your fragile alkaline balance.
It’s something I love.. and I am already a serious ‘alkalizer’.
If you already have a routine — morning meditation, a quick surya namaskar, a brisk walk around the block – I’m suggesting you add this to your ‘package’ of morning ritual. As Anthony Robbins teaches, by linking it to other daily choices, it becomes a part of the whole.
So here’s my suggestion. It’s neither original nor new, but it is GOOD. A glass of warm lemon water with Himalayan salt.
If you take on this daily ritual you’ll be joining many elite athletes who have already learned its value.
One 250ml glass of warm lemon water with Himalayan salt in the morning can do wonders. Would you believe increasing your immune function, decreasing your uric acid to fight inflammation, improving digestion, and balancing your body? Much of this is the vitamin C in the lemon juice plus the many essential minerals in Himalayan salt.
When I began writing this I could think of about 6 benefits. After a little time communing with Mother Google, I ended up with NINETEEN benefits!
1 Lemons are serious anti inflammation warriors.
The juice can help dissolve the uric acid in joints. It’s also have been reported to help build and repair tendons, ligaments, and bone.
Lemon juice’s anti-inflammatory property could of course be especially beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, according to an American College of Physicians study on osteoarthritis, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2000).
2. Lemon juice supports good food and water absorption.
Only one glass a day will provide a better overall mineral balance, which in turn promotes proper food and water absorption in your body, allowing essential nutrients to get where they need to be.
3. Alkaline Powerhouse! (pH). The alkalizing effects of lemon and the natural salt are going to buffer your body’s delicate pH balance, depositing alkaline minerals into your depleted storehoue, your alkaline buffer.
4. Boost immune function.
Just 1 lemon serves up 139% of your RDA for vitamin C. One lemon’s juice is a natural alternative to that vitamin C supplement you may be taking.
5. Cellular detox
Himalayan salt mixed with lemon juice and water helps to pull toxins from your cells, reducing cellular toxicity. How? Well, your interstitial liquid – the liquid surrounding your cell has to be the right pH because it needs it for the right electrical conductivity. That’s why alkalizing is so important, and also why pure neutral pH is empty in health terms.
6. Bye Bye cellulite.
Natural salts like Himalayan salt have been used for centuries for skin care. Many spa treatments for cellulitis contain some form of salt and/or citrus blend. A daily gulp of lemon and salt water in the morning may firm up a few of those unsightly areas. Now you’ve mastered one, why not two!
7. DayGlo Skin.
Natural salt for skin problems, such as psoriasis and eczema, dates back to ancient Roman times. According to Science Tribune (1999), Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius’ doctor, Galen from Pergamum, used sea salt for skin diseases,
8. Ease up on allergies!
Some people say that the combination of lemon and salt, mixed into warm water, acts as a natural antihistamine for allergies. It may be the perfect alternative to those pink pills that leave you feeling drowsy. I can’t vouch for it but if we are getting all these other benefits, wouldn’t it be cool if it ‘just happened’?
9. Sleep Easy.
Lemon and Himalayan salt have hormone-balancing properties, which may be more than useful at ‘zedtime’.
10. Control blood sugar.
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2000), the fiber in lemons helps to balance blood glucose levels, which is useful for type 2 diabetes patients and prediabetics alike, so don’t bother holding back the fibre as you juice.
11. Detoxify your liver.
Vitamin C helps us to produce glutathione, a foundational player in detoxifying the liver. It also has antiseptic properties that are useful for liver function.
12. Fresh breath! This drink may not be the first thing we think of when you think of fresh breath. Lemon and salt in this simple morning drink help kill the bad breath bacteria that build up while you’re sleeping.
13. Chill out!
Easy on the anti depressants! Chill out and return to Buddhahood by upping your vitamin C levels first thing in the morning.
14. Blood pressure.
Lemons are not all about vitamin C and fiber. They also have potassium, which is a must-have for flushing excessive sodium from the body.
15. Hey, Baby!
The same vitamin C content and hormone-balancing properties of our drink can help lift your mood. And a good mood is essential for a more er.. playful future.
16. Hydration is the KEY
We tend to forget how important hydration is, especially after a long sleep with no water. Start your morning off right and get hydrated. The water, salt and lemon will get your day off to the perfect start.
17. An antioxidant powerhouse.
Lemon holds a wealth of vitamins and minerals. Himalayan salt boosts your mineral and trace mineral levels even more. The antioxidant and detoxifying properties of lemon saltwater pack a powerful, free radical knockout punch.
18. Improve your heart health?
Lemons and real salt are reported as exceptional for increasing heart health on their own. Combine the two into one vibrant morning drink, for chest-thumpin’ health..
As I mentioned earlier, natural mineral rich salt supports electrochemical reactions in the body. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2006), the Vitamin C in our lemon zinger is, “associated with lower endothelial dysfunction in men with no history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes,”
19. A Well Belly
Before breakfast, or any meal, this drink will signal your liver to produce the essential bile needed to clean out harmful gut bacteria. The fiber content and natural salt will also promote digestion.
A glass of AlkaWay purified water rich in H2 (what else?) with a squeeze of one lemon plus half a teaspoon of Himalayan salt. Too easy.
More great alkalizing ideas are in our New Alkaline Diet and Defence Program, available here now. It’s approaching 5000 downloads and is packed with 16 years of accumulated wisdom.
And yes, it’s free right now.
As always, we are presenting this as informational only. We do not agree nor disagree with the good doctor and ask you to check with your own doctor before undertaking any change of diet for health reasons.
The following is a transcript from a video by Dr George McDermott, Phlebotomist (Blood specialist)
“Hello ladies and gentlemen. My name is Dr. George McDermott. I’m a state certified phlebotomist, which means I’m a blood doctor. As my kids jokingly call me, they call me sometimes Count Dracula.
What we’re going to be talking about today is just as serious as being under the fangs of Count Dracula, and that nemesis, that epidemic that is overtaking America is called acidosis.
Acidosis is too much blood acid in your blood system. It’s measured by pH. PH is a scale which only measures water, H2O. It’s a scale that goes and starts off from 0 and it ends at 14. Right here at 7 is pure rain water. From 0 to 7 is acid. From 7 to 14 is alkaline.
The human body was designed by God to be pH 7.365.
Very easy to remember, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, you need to be alkaline. For your sake and for your family’s sake and for your grandchildren’s sake, they all must be alkaline to enjoy the fruits of their life.
Americans, the majority of Americans are here at 6.8, and they are suffering from a condition called acidosis. Acidosis is a medical term that it very simply means they have too much blood acid.
This is caused by five different reasons.
Number one is the diet that we’re eating.
Americans eat too much fast foods, we have too many hamburgers, french fries, and of course, Coca-Cola is absolutely the worst thing you can drink.
The second reason why people have acidosis is because of stress.
Stress is killing Americans.
The third reason is because of too many parasites.
The fourth reason is because of drugs.
I’m talking about over the counter medications. I’m talking about aspirin, acetahetamine which is also called Tylenol. ll these medications have too much acid and too many Americans are doing these.
All four of these things we can control, but the one thing that we cannot control and the thing that is very important is the age.
Because the older we get, the more acidic we’re going to become.
This is going to destroy the quality of your life.
The human body goes through three states of life, from the time you’re to the time you’re 25, you are in what’s called an anabolic stage. This anabolic stage is a Greek word which simply means that you’re growing. When you are born, you are 7.7 on the pH scale. You start off at 7.7.
From 25 to 45 you are in what’s called homeostasis. At this period you are 7.0. This is a balancing act. That’s what homeostasis means. Starting off at 45, very slowly that you become more and more acidic. This situation medically is called catabolic. Catabolic is the opposite of anabolic. Catabolic is a Greek word which basically means you’re falling apart.
Now, the problem is is when you get to 6.4 on this pH scale which is out here, you die. This is a lifeline right here. You start off at 7.7, the middle of your life you’re about 7. As you start to become older and older, you become more and more acidic. When you reach 6.4 you shriveled up and basically you die.
It’s very, very critically important that you understand this acidosis, because what’s happening is as your body is moving this way, by drinking alkaline water you will be able to replenish the vital nutrients into your body and you will be able to remain more and more alkaline. Therefore, adjust your life so you will be able to live this way.
This is not only important for yourself, it’s important for your children and important for your grandchildren. Everybody needs to participate in this.
The easiest method of doing this is simply just drinking a glass of water, 8 glasses of water a day. By doing that, you are naturally restoring the alkalinity into your bloodstream and you’re keeping away from the ravages of chronic disease.
Chronic diseases are the diseases which are built up by too much acid waste in your body. These diseases very simply are cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and the list goes on and on and on. This is the major diseases which kill Americans is all based on acidosis, too much acid in the bloodstream.
If you want to preserve your family, if you want to give your family the quality of life that they deserve, not only for yourself, but also for your children and your grandchildren, you must remain alkaline. It gives you the vitality. Young children have to be alkaline in order to grow. In order to have a mentally alert mind, you have to be alkaline. That’s the reason why it’s so critically important for you to alkalize your body all the time by drinking alkaline water.”
How to end carb cravings … FINALLY!
I don’t think there’s anyone on earth that has escaped suffering the intensity of carb cravings.
The bread basket at the restaurant just sits there openly seducing you.
That load of pasta that was supposed to feed eight has mysteriously .. gone!
The chips machine at work whispers to you every time you pass.
Your mind tries to work but just can’t rid itself of the image of a muffin, donut or bagel .
This is the nether world of carb cravings, and it’s real for 99.9% of people. But like a true addict, most of us deny it.
The Truth: All carbs are not created equal
Yes, carbohydrates may be a necessary food group, but starchy carbs are the least healthy (and most addicting) form.
Yes, they may provide some nutrients, but starchy carbs turn to sugar upon digestion. They aren’t much better than eating a candy bar or cookie. Want an example? Potato!
So for healthy, nutritious carbs, vegies and legumes are by far your best choice.
Why must you be so deprived?
There are many reasons that we carve carbs, and you can help curb your cravings if you figure out what may be behind them.
Here are some possibilities: (feel free to den them, but they ain’t going away!)
Most of us are Carbohydrate Addicts
Current research says very clearly that the primary underlying cause of carbohydrate addiction is in your brain’s reward system.
Sugar and starchy carbohydrate foods cause the release of serotonin (your body’s feelgood chemical) and it gives us a calming sensation.
Refined Carbohydrates also trigger increased releases of dopamine and norepinephrine. Your brain becomes deluged with these neurotransmitters, and a feeling of euphoria results and a craving for more refined carbohydrates is stimulated. Crazy, man!
An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) may cause feeling of fatigue. Many people reach for refined carbohydrate pick-me-ups including soda, chips, candy bars, crackers and other similar foods to combat this fatigue.
Yeast feeds on sugar, and with enough sugar can multiply out of control and overcome your friendly intestinal flora (which normally helps to keep yeast in check and under control).
A vicious cycle begins where yeast, wanting more nourishment, triggers cravings for sugar, which in turn leads to greater yeast overgrowth, which then triggers more intense cravings for sugar.
Stress and adrenal overload
Stress triggers the release of the hormone cortisol which can give you an intense appetite for sugars and fats.
Menopause and/or pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
When levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone drop, women may be more prone to insulin resistance The body’s cells don’t respond as they should to insulin. This can cause sugar cravings to soar. The cells haven’t received the glucose they were expecting from the bloodstream.
Depressed people often report feeling less depressed after eating high-carb snack foods.
This can be a demonstration of the increased production of serotonin after refined carbohydrate ingestion, which mimics the action of antidepressant medications.
Lacking nutrients can trigger cravings, especially the B vitamins.
What You Can Do
Obviously if there is an underlying problem, we need to address it. Here’s some measures that can help:
- Probiotics: help keep yeast under control.
- Multi-vitamin: To ensure that any nutrients that may be missing in your diet are provided.
- Vitamin D: Low Vitamin D levels are associated with decreased satiety.
- Eat a healthy, whole foods diet to provide a variety of healthy nutrients, fiber and antioxidants.
- Avoid refined carbohydrates at all cost. Completely eliminate them from the refrigerator, cupboard and pantry, and bring protein snacks to work with you. There no simple or halfway answer here. Would you suggest your heroin addicted son could just shoot up on weekends? It’s cold turkey or nothing.
- Cook meals at home versus dining out. At home meals can encourage better control over what is served, and avoids the temptation of the bread basket, desserts and carbohydrate-rich dishes like pasta. And.. even if the restaurant is expensive.. it’s still not going to make food or oil choices with the same intention of your ultimate health that you can have with your own food selections.
- Drink plenty of alkaline high hydrogen water. Dehydration is the number one nutritional deficiency in North America. Our bodies often mistake hunger for thirst, and not drinking enough water can lead to overeating. but remember.. there’s water.. and there’s water!
- Avoid caffeine. Caffeine can aggravate sugar addiction (when a person comes down from a caffeine-induced energy ‘high,’ they often reach for sugar).
You can do it! We did, and there is still the same love of food on the ‘other side’.
If you’ve ever used pH strips.. then used liquid pH reagent, you’ll now that the strips seem to read lower than the reagent when used to measure alkaline water.
We’d have people calling us up to tell us their AlkaWay system wasn’t measuring up.. and eventually we got it! They were using pH strips.
We send them pH drops, and voila! like magic, their water is testing good pH again. When they use pH reagent drops that change the water color to show pH level , it immediately registers correct.
It’s all about alkalinity vs. pH.
pH test Strips are designed to test body fluids. Our body fluids – urine and saliva are ‘alkaline’ but not high pH (see the video below.) This just means our fluids have a concentration of alkaline minerals in the water. Things like electrolytes, salts and other mineral compounds constitute the alkaline material. It’s this concentration which registers on a pH strip
With what we generally refer to as alkaline water, there is a difference between alkalinity and pH level.
With electric water ionizers, that don’t actually add any alkaline minerals to the water, that difference can be pretty large. It’s the reason the pH level can fall quickly after removing it from the the machine. With natural systems like the UltraStream, that difference is usually less, which results in a water that loses pH slower.
In the UltraStream we are using alkaline calcium and magnesium that contributes to the alkalinity of the water, and a reaction of the water awith the special Japanese magnesium media that concentrates molecular hydrogen in the water over and above the H2 in the H2O. Asa result it’s been tested to almost 4 x the H2 of a $4000 electric water ionizer.
It’s this difference between alkaline and pH that causes the strips to be inaccurate when testing the water. We use drops to test our water, and strips to test our body pH.
Go here to check our pH strips and for our pH reagent. Watch the short video below for more info.
It’s pretty simple really. Most water supplies are already alkaline.
So why are you paying premium dollars for bottled alkaline water – in plastic?
Yes, we’ve all accepted that drinking alkaline water was good for us and the metastudy we have on our website proves it.. but no-one asked about the water they already drink from their home tap and whether drinking $5 worth of bottled water (sent from Italy to Australia or America) a day will actually restore our alkaline balance.
So here’s the truth. It won’t! The best way to restore the alkaline minerals used up by our bodies in counteracting our acid overload is simple. Replace them in quantities sufficient to restore balance.
Sounds so simple, and it is. Yes, alkaline water will help, as will alkalizing foods, but for my money, taking the actual minerals in their original form is the obvious answer. That’s why every morning I take a glass of UltraStream water, and add a teaspoon of Alkaline Booster. That way I have my molecular hydrogen and my alkaline minerals aplenty.
Take a look at this video as I explain in full.
The UltraStream water filter, water ionizer, water alkalizer and hydrogen infused water system isn’t a one-off product.
It’s an evolution from electric water ionizer to natural, from high cost and maintenance to simplicity and high end filtration. Ian Blair Hamilton is the designer of the UltraStream and is founder of AlkaWay in 2000. He is regarded as an ‘elder’ of the water alkalizer and alkaline diet community internationally.
Take a few minutes to learn the ‘why’ of the UltraStream.
Answer: A true “alkalarian diet” is 80% + raw, but “raw diets” are not always alkaline.
The raw food diet is built on one basic premise… cooking your food destroys enzymes, leaches minerals, damages vitamins, and denatures antioxidants. All of which are true.
The Alkaline Diet (acid – alkaline diet / pH diet) is built on one basic premise as well…certain foods contribute to acidification of your body, and some help to alkalize your body. It just so happens that most foods are more alkaline forming when they’re in their raw state.
Alkaline diets are mostly raw, but raw diets aren’t necessarily alkalizing.
For example… raw foodists may eat a lot of raw fish (sushi), raw dairy (cheese), or raw meat (tartare) – all of which are acidifying. You’ll also see a lot of “raw treats” in raw food books (like cookies, ice cream, etc)…which are also acidifying. While raw food diets are certainly much more healthy than our conventional cooked diets, eating just “raw” isn’t going to necessarily help you get your pH up.
If you are acidic, then you need to get more alkalizing foods into your diet. Our Alkaline Diet and Defence Program is free right now and you can dive right in the what we can say is your most comprehensive resource on the Web. Click on the link and you’ll find your invitation.
As you’ll see in the lessons, foods are more alkalizing in their raw form, but you have to be eating the right kinds if you want to get your body back into a pH balanced state.
I spent some time with John Biethan, our man in the US today on blab.im talking about Green Smoothies.
I’m a bit left-of-centre about Alkaline Green Smoothies as you will see.
INFLAMMATION: IT’S A “HOT” TOPIC.
It seems connected to avirtually every known chronic disease — from diabetes to obesity, heart disease to cancer, autism to dementia… even depression.
Inflammatory diseases such as allergies, asthma, arthritis, and autoimmune disease are also increasing at dramatic rates. Doctors are trained to shut off inflammation with aspirin, anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil or Motrin, steroids, and increasingly powerful immune suppressing medication with the usual associated side effects.
Doctors are really not trained to find and treat the underlying causes of inflammation in chronic disease. Hidden allergens, infections, environmental toxins, an inflammatory diet, and stress are the real causes of these inflammatory conditions, but that’s a big ‘ask’ for a 15 minute standard consultation.
Let’s look at one ‘niche’ of inflammation. Autoimmune diseases now affect 24 million people. They include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. And yet.. these are often addressed using powerful immune suppressing medication and not by addressing the cause. A bit like taking a lot of aspirin while you are standing on a tack. The treatment isn’t more aspirin or a strong immune suppressant. It’s removing the tack.
Inflammation Causes Disease
To cool off inflammation in the body, first we must find the source. Functional medicine, the emerging 21st century paradigm of systems medicine, teaches us to treat the cause, not only the symptoms, to ask the question WHY are you sick, not only WHAT disease do you have.
Autoimmunity: What it is and How it Occurs
We are facing an epidemic of allergic (60 million people), asthmatic (30 million people), and autoimmune disorders (24 million people). As we already said, autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, celiac disease, thyroid disease, and the many other hard-to-classify syndromes in the 21st century.
These are all autoimmune conditions, and at their root they are connected by one central biochemical process: A runaway immune response also known as systemic inflammation that results in your body attacking its own tissues. Your immune system is your defense against invaders. It’s your internal army and has to clearly distinguish friend from foe — to know you from others. Autoimmunity occurs when your immune system gets confused and your own tissues get caught in friendly cross-fire.
Your body is fighting something — an infection, a toxin, an allergen, a food or the stress response — and somehow it redirects its hostile attack on your joints, your brain, your thyroid, your gut, your skin, or sometimes your whole body.
This immune confusion results from what is referred to as molecular mimicry. Conventional approaches don’t have a method for finding the insult causing the problem. Functional medicine provides a map to find out which molecule the cells are mimicking.
Where Do Autoimmune Disorders Happen?
Interestingly, autoimmune disorders occur almost exclusively in developed countries. People in poor nations without modern amenities like running water, flush toilets, washing machines, and sterile backyards just don’t get these diseases.
If you were a farm kid with lots of animals, you are also less likely to have any of these inflammatory disorders. Playing in the dirt, getting dirty, and being exposed to bugs and infections trains your immune system to recognize what is foreign and what is “you.”
In this country, autoimmune diseases, when taken all together, are a huge health burden. They are the eighth leading cause of death among women, shortening the average patient’s lifespan by eight years. The annual health care cost for autoimmune diseases is $120 billion a year representing nearly twice the economic health care burden of cancer (about $ 70 billion a year). (i)
Unfortunately, many of the conventional treatments available can make you feel worse. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil, steroids, immune suppressants like methotrexate, and the new TNF-alpha blockers like Enbrel or Remicade can lead to intestinal bleeding, kidney failure, depression, psychosis, osteoporosis, muscle loss, and diabetes, not to mention overwhelming infection and cancer.
When used selectively these drugs can help people get their lives back. But they are really not a long-term solution. They shouldn’t be the end of treatment, just a bridge to cool off inflammation while we treat the root cause of the disease.
9 Steps to Overcoming Autoimmune Disease
- Check for hidden infections — yeast, viruses, bacteria, Lyme, etc. — with the help of a doctor, and treat them.
- Check for hidden food allergens with IgG food testing or just try The UltraSimple Diet, which is designed to eliminate most food allergens.
- Get tested for celiac disease, which is a blood test that any doctor can do.
- Get checked for heavy metal toxicity. Mercury and other metals can cause autoimmunity.
- Fix your gut. For details, see my blog on irritable bowel syndrome.
- Use nutrients such as fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, and probiotics to help calm your immune response naturally.
- Exercise steadily regularly — it’s a natural anti-inflammatory.
- Practice deep relaxation like yoga, deep breathing, biofeedback, or massage. Stress worsens the immune response.
- Look at your inflammation habits in your food and water. Alkalize and get a regular supply of infused hydrogen water.
The answers may be right in front of you.
Treat the underlying causes of your illness and you will begin to experience vibrant health once more.

Most Calcium / Magnesium supplements are supplied in a ratio of 2:1.
Recommendations vary from a 4:1 to a 1:1 calcium to magnesium ratio. Some vendors and practitioners claim that calcium and magnesium oppose each other at the intracellular level, and therefore low magnesium intake causes high calcium storage, or calcification.Others maintain that magnesium is needed for proper calcium absorption, and that low magnesium intake can be responsible for low calcium levels.
Is there a Correct Answer – is there an “optimal” Calcium / Magnesium Ratio?
Some people -especially Australians and Americans – retain far too much calcium and constantly struggle to gain magnesium requirements. Others suffer from magnesium overload and need to supplement larger amounts of calcium to overcome calcium deficiencies. Mineral ratios can also be affected by neurological disturbances such as following spinal alignment problems.
If zinc is on the high side, and potassium low, then taking extra magnesium will usually lower calcium. Magnesium supports zinc, but lowers potassium, which is a calcium synergist.
Alternatively, if potassium is higher, and zinc lower, we may find that taking magnesium will push calcium higher as well.
Vitamin D increases calcium, phosphorus, and – to a lesser degree – magnesium absorption.
If calcium is above-normal, but magnesium is even higher than calcium, there’s a good chance that you may eventually experience symptoms of a calcium deficiency.
Low levels of manganese, phosphorus, zinc, nickel and Vitamin C can encourage an increase in intracellular calcium ratio, and may eventually create a risk for calcification.
Generally speaking, alkaline water sold over the counter is simply water in a bottle with added calcium carbonate, often at similar levels to Calcium in your home water. Calcium in water is certainly assimilated better than through food, but only an analysis of the Calcium levels to learn just how much water equals a recommended daily allowance will tell you whether the Calcium is having any effect. Most water supplies and many alkaline water bottling companies brands have such a low concentration of calcium that you’d need to drink many gallons of water to get your RDA.
…have been wrongly depicted as separating the alkaline and acid ions in their electrolysis process, but test results show this to be wrong. Electrolysis creates hydrogen rich water, and this has been interpreted as alkaline water. It is not. It is high hydrogen water that a pH Meter will react to. Less experienced users of the pH meter make the wrong assumption that this means the water is alkaline.A natural non electric water ionizer may or may not have both magnesium and calcium in their media. Of the number on the market, all will ‘read alkaline’ in pH, but very few actually produce molecular hydrogen. These units are giving a high pH reading because they are adding alkaline minerals to the output water. Always ask for test results, preferably over the life of the filter. What we are finding is that there is a significant difference in how people understand alkaline water. Many water ionizer vendors don’t even know that their water isn’t high alkaline but is high in beneficial molecular hydrogen. Always ask to see the test results.
Whilst I don’t agree with everything she says (she likes distilled water!) I do like much of the things Dr Virginia Golschmidt of Saveourbones has some great things, like this great – and simple – alkalizing recipe.
1. Hearty Stew
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- ½ medium red onion, diced
- ½ cup quinoa
- ½ cup carrots, shredded
- ½ cup green beans
- 1½ cups vegetable broth
- 5 tomatoes, cut up in small pieces
- 1 cup lima beans, cooked
- ½ teaspoon sea salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon parsley flakes
- In a large saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onion until soft.
- Add the quinoa, carrots, 1 cup broth, tomatoes, salt, pepper, and parsley. Bring to a boil, then simmer until quinoa is tender, 12 to 15 minutes.
- Stir in beans and cook for about 5 more minutes. You can add more vegetable broth to reach desired consistency.
She points to a 2015 study of alkaline potassium salts’ effect on bone resorption. (Worth a read!)The study, published in the journal Osteoporosis International, also revealed that high intake of potassium salts significantly reduces the excretion of calcium and acid in urine.
“This means that excess acid is neutralized and bone mineral is preserved,” said lead author Dr Helen Lambert from the University of Surrey.
“Excess acid in the body, produced as a result of a typical Western diet high in animal and cereal protein, causes bones to weaken and fracture. Our study shows that these salts could prevent osteoporosis, as our results showed a decrease in bone resorption.”
Although bone resorption and bone formation is a natural process, allowing bones to grow, heal and adapt, in osteoporosis, the balance is shifted so that more bone is broken down than is built up, leading to fragility and fractures.
Last week we invited HealtheMail subscribers here in Australia to try out our new Are You Acidic” Quiz here on our Australian Alkaway website. Wow! What a response!
Our readers must really like Quizzes – or they really want to know whether they are acidic or not. I spent most of yesterday studying the many responses you sent in, and working out the ‘real story’ of each individual submission.
If we had added all we wanted to know into the quiz I think we’d be asking you to spend an hour rather than five minutes! However it was a wonderful opportunity because we could see a real overview of our readers’ health and their strategies for maintaining it. Yet.. there are obvious misunderstandings, especially around use of alcohol. One respondent talked to me today. He was advised by his doctor to drink a glass of red once a day because of its positive health effects. Who am I to argue?
The quiz showed its weaknesses too. I should have given more options about the water you drink beyond just alkaline or acid. I should have provided multiple choices for diet because you can be a vegetarian AND eat bread, but the Quiz didn’t allow for this. It’s already fixed – courtesy of some really smart software – so future Quiz participants will get a more accurate picture.
I am committed to sighting every quiz because it’s obvious there’s a ’back story’ to every submission. Here’s an example:
‘Kathy’s’ Quiz results:
No tobacco, regular alcohol, no sodas.
One serve of green vegetables per day, one piece of fruit a day, 4+ serves of meat per week, white meat preferred.
Good stress manager, moderately stressful work, no mood swings.
6-8 hrs sleep, a little pollution some days, 5-8 glasses per day of acidic water.
Age 45-64, female, health oriented.
Eats bread every day
‘Kathy’ cares about her health. She is at an age where acidity gets worse and hydration gets worse, and she’s making intelligent choices of no smoking, no soft drinks, but (and here’s where our quiz is too liberal) she drinks alcohol regularly.
I think we all strike a deal with whole health. We ‘do the right thing’ so we can be ‘a little naughty’ in other things. ‘Kathy’, like me, likes some alcohol but we didn’t learn how much, so we can’t identify it as a serious acidifier.
But.. here’s the big takeaway I get from ‘Kathy’s quiz.
Kathy is trying to stop acidifying eating and drinking habits so she can have a little alcohol.
However… look at her alkaline intake – or lack of it. Recommended greens serve per day (admittedly difficult) is 5 a day. Kathy has one. Fruit is similar. She has one piece. I did state in the Quiz results that many fruits are actually highly acidifying. The humble banana, for instance, does have a small amount of potassium (which qualifies it in some alkaline diets as a good alkalizer) but it has a LOT of nasty addictive acidifying fructose! Berries are a safer bet as alkalizing fruit, also limes, lemons, grapefruits and oranges.
Her meat intake is another victim of the Quiz. What does 4+ serves of meat really mean? I had some people submit that they were ‘Big Meat Eaters’. Does that mean they eat meat every day, or does it mean they eat a huge steak at every sitting? Putting aside the meat vs. vegetarian argument, (I was a vegetarian for 12 years) I don’t look at meat as do most alkaline diet promoters. Yes, if you eat huge steaks, the body will convert what it can to energy, then stash the rest as acids in body fat. Your body will struggle to combat the rush of excess acids by carrying out a raid on all the alkaline sources in our body including our skeleton. This can’t wait. If we remain in an alkaline state things start breaking down almost immediately, so the decision to strip calcium from the bones is an evolutionary one, well designed, like everything our paleolithic body design. It wants to survive! If you eat the right amount of the right meat, this won’t happen and you’ll receive the broad spectrum of essential amino acids like no vegetable can ever match.
Cassie and I now eat meat because we are committed to changing our source of energy from glucose to fat. This is a big subject, and Cassie’s alkalinepaleodiet.com blog is a great source of more well researched info on this. This changes many assumptions including the value of saturated fats. We eat grass fed, grass finished red meat, fish once a week and I have very thin bacon (1 mm) plus some liver with my breakfast. We really try NOT to eat chicken anymore. We ate it because we thought we had to eat lean. Kathy probably believes (like most people) that white meat is better than red, (read this to change your mind!) but we now look for red meat with a good layer of fat because we know that’s where we’ll get our Vitamin K2, the hugely important vitamin with the ability to facilitate deposition of calcium back on our skeleton.
Our New Akaline Diet stresses that you really need to look at your relationship with two very pernicious foods both regarded with the love and devotion of an addict. I’m talking about sugar and bread. Both of them are acidifiers, and both are very addictive so when I see that someone eats bread every day, I remember how it was for me, ‘coming off’ both sugar and bread.
This relates back to the meat question because, fortified by the strong antioxidant effect of sufficient greens, supported by healthy fats that move us off glucose energy and onto a ketogenic metabolism, amazing things happen. In my case I used to be called ‘The Hungry Ghost’ for my habit of ‘vacuuming up’ any leftovers after every meal.
I was forever hungry, and forever furtively snacking. And suddenly I changed (well, not suddenly – when I got over my addictions) My desire for quantity disappeared. I developed a greater desire for greens and wonder of wonders – I ate far less meat! I still ate meat – grassfed, but I didn’t keep on eating! My mental acuity improved, me energy levels soared, and yes, I admit it, my libido even improved.
So.. when I see someone eating bread every day, I see an addict to a highly acidic food.
Kathy said she drinks 5-8 glasses of water a day which is great (and exceptional!), and again the quiz failed her because the only alternative to ‘Alkaline’ in the Quiz was ‘acid’. There are very few places in Australia where you can get acid water from your tap. It is against the Australian Water Safety guidelines. It corrodes pipes and in old houses, unleashes a dose of heavy metals from the brazed joints in the old pipes. I’m sure Kathy would have told me more if my Quiz had allowed her.
Finally, balance is not a concept, it’s a necessity, but if you are addicted to certain foods you’ll never believe me. I would predict that if Kathy got off sugar and bread, she would very happily eat more greens, alkalizing fruits, and less meat. Balance would return. But.. we are strange animals. The only thing that really forces us to alter our preferred diet is pain. This may be disease, or an intolerable procession of sub-health. So I can’t say any more on Kathy’s case because ultimately her choices will be determined by her own acceptance of what she believes health to be. If she accepts that a cold and flu once a year is good health, she probably won’t change. If she accepts my version of health, she may change. (I haven’t had a cold or flu since 2000
‘Kathy’, I’ve kept you anonymous for the purposes of this post. You know who you are and I can say, having read every Quiz, that you have many similar friends in the Quiz group! Thank you for being my ‘example’ and good luck to you!
To international readers, stick around! We’ll be installing the Quiz on our other international websites as soon as we can!
To locals who feel like throwing themselves under our truck – er – Quiz, here it is!
There have been many people over many years making the claim that an alkaline diet will cure cancer.
In our 15 years of researching the alkaline diet and water we have had many thousands of people ask us this question. In the early days we were very optimistic. In retrospect we share that optimism with many thousands of other websites on the net, and yes, we did have customers tell us that our alkaline water had healed them.
Click here for our page on this important subject.
Almost everybody who starts our New Alkaline diet has to deal with cravings. I’m sure even Elle McPherson went through them.
Unless you never ate sugar in your life, you’ve had cravings. Yet… knowing that it’s a common problem doesn’t make it any easier for you.
We’ve found that these tactics help a lot. We are asking a lot to give up your ‘crutch’ your ‘Mother’s Little Helper’ so the least we can do is show you what we have learned about overcoming cravings.
There are a few tactics we have found that work for almost everybody.
5 Crave Stopping Hacks
1. Sleep Enough.
It sounds like an odd first hack, but short on zeds does make you crave junk food. It’s also a sure way to make sure that you don’t have enough willpower to resist because you feel like well… crap..
Without sufficient sleep, 2 things happen.
a) You overproduce cortisol. This makes you hungrier, particularly for sugar.
b) Your body sends less glucose to your prefrontal cortex , your impulse-control center. You have less control over your actions (and your cravings).
How important is sleep? Try living without it.
2. Eat Enough Healthy Fats.
We usually crave non-NAD (New Alkaline Diet) foods because we’re just not eating enough, especially when first starting on the diet. Remember that you’re cutting out a lot of the nasty starches and sugars, so you need a replacement. The health-friendliest and most satisfying way to replace it is with good fats, such as coconut oil, pastured beef fat, avocado fat etc.
Make sure that you eat enough food at every meal. If this doesn’t seem a problem,Sounds like it shouldn’t be a problem, but when you’re changing diet, you often under eat without even knowing.
3. Avoid Snacking.
If you are already a snacker you’ve trained your body like a puppy to beg for food at regular hours. Continue to snack regularly, and you’ll continue to be reminded snack at those times because your body will expect it.
I know, I know. You don’t like this suggestion. just remember the AA maxim. One day at a time.
Once you say no to snackaddiction (and begin eating only nutritious NAD foods), your hunger pangs will cease because you’re getting off the up-down mood cycle so evident in over-acidic people.
4. Drink More Water: alkaline hydrogen rich pure water if possible..
Drinking has the same problems as eating. Being dehydrated supercharges your cravings. You don’t need to drink gallons, but definitely make sure you drink water regularly.
5. Go Cold Turkey.
There’s no easy way to say this. Just do it. We admit we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable. Face it, Kiddo. If you could have changed your diet, YOU WOULD HAVE! Sugar is by far the most addictive part of non-NAD foods. It isn’t easy to give up processed sugar cold turkey, but if you can do it, your cravings will be much easier to control sooner rather than later. I can absolutely say that my whole food preferences, servings size and enjoyment have all changed as I gave up on sugar (and grains and acidic foods!)
Are you in? Or are you still trying to manage the addict?

3 Steps to Sugar, Carb and Acid freedom
As a ‘normal’ Western Diet human, my years of processed foods, poor exercise levels, and “normal” western eating patterns literally programmed my body to burn NOTHING but calories and sugars from the foods I consume each day INSTEAD of burning off body fat that’s stored on your body.
The most popular exercise programs take way too much time and use old-school methods that cause you to crave more carbs and calories – especially calories from sugar – FORCING your body to burn sugars and waste away nothing but stored energy. Look around at gym and see how many members are scoffing energy drinks.
In this state, every time I eat and exercise, my body is busy fighting a losing battle. The eating and the exercising doesn’t have to change: my metabolism has to change.
Fortunately, I’ve discovered a way to reset my body’s fat burning switch so that my body burns fat FIRST every time I move and exercise.
It’s a super simple 3-step metabolic primer from weight loss guru Shaun Hadsall that seems to turn off your body’s “addiction” to burning sugars, while making your most stubborn fat your “go to” energy source in LESS that one week’s time.
1: Try consuming zero starches or fruits for 3 or 4 days in a row during the week.
We are doing this to accelerate depletion of glycogen energy stores and start your body burning mostly fat again. Consume protein in every meal to help increase satiety and keep your body in an anabolic high-energy fat-burning environment.
You can burn a ton more belly fat by using this approach just a few days of the week.
2: Increase your fat intake and double (at least) your servings of green cruciferous veggies on deplete days.
When you lower carbs for a few days you’ll need energy from other sources. Friendly ‘good’ fats and cruciferous veggies should be first choice to help provide this needed energy.
Try extra fish or krill oil, olive oil, coconut oil and raw nuts to increase your fat intake — And spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, arugula, green beans, brussels sprouts and cabbage – all great choices for your veggies.
We are trying to provide all the fiber, vitamins, and minerals necessary to maximize fat-loss during a lower carb phase. And we should experience a BIG DECREASE yin cravings .
3: Double your daily good water intake, while depleting carbs.
Almost everyone underestimates the effectiveness of proper hydration for UNDOING the damage of over-eating, getting rid of excess water retention, and supporting other metabolic processes that burn fat. Of course in my case I supercharge this process by only drinking ultra pure alkaline hydrogen rich water from my own invention, the UltraStream.
Don’t foregt! If you had high carb meals in the last 2 days you’ll be holding almost an extra 3 grams of water for every gram of carb you consumed. So if you carbed up over the weekend, we’re talking an extra 700 to 1000 grams of water sloshing around between cells!.
Here’s a good rule of thumb. Consume 5% of your total body weight in ounces of water on your carb deplete days. So if you weigh 70kg then you should be shooting for 3.5 litres of water minimum.
Hey, do yourself a favour. Chart it, journal it, log it.. but any way you do it, record it! After 3 or 4 days of using this strategy, your body and hormones will be PRIMED to burn PURE fat when you exercise. And it’s very possible that if you didn’t record your progress, you won’t even realise. That’s the power of our mind’s ability to resists change!
And remember.. this all depends on a good exercise strategy continuing, because that’s what is burning energy and forcing you to change over the a fat burning metabolism.
At a beautiful 50, Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson is seriously into health.
We’ve watched with interest over the last year as Elle Macpherson launched into her Alkaline Lifestyle. First the Super Greens, and now she’s revealed that she loves pH testing.
We’ve reviewed Elle’s alkaline green powder supplement earlier. It’s good, but perhaps not so good that it is any way better than many other products, including OURS.
In a recent interview, Elle ‘The Body’ Macpherson has disclosed that she carries a pH kit with her wherever she goes, slipping surreptitiously away between shoots to have a quick twinkle and test.
We’ve been supplying pH Test kits to clients for years, and wondered at the sudden increase in sales in the last week. So we did a little research and came up with Elle’s preference for an alkaline diet.
“For Macpherson, the diet means having one espresso instead of three, eating only one animal protein meal (typically fish or chicken) a day, increasing her vegetable intake and still enjoying dark chocolate, coffee, goat’s cheese and Haloumi and every day two teaspoons of THE SUPER ELIXIR™ alkalising greens (Dr Simone’s special blend of balanced nutrients). ‘Nothing too extreme – it’s all about balance,’ she says.”
Testing your pH levels is really simple and it can give a lot of information about the state of your health. It will tell you how acidic or alkaline your tissues and fluids are – and that affects all aspects of your well-being.
How? In all kinds of ways.
The effects of an overly acidic diet and system
If you’re overly acidic, you may feel a lack of energy, find it difficult to lose weight, experience poor digestion, suffer from aches and pains or even fall victim to more serious disorders. In fact, since acid is naturally corrosive and inflammatory, it irritates the organs it comes in contact with.
How do I know if I’m acidic?
First of all you can look at your diet. If it’s filled with processed foods (anything in a foil packet!), carbohydrates, sugars, caffeine or alcohol, chances are you have higher acidic levels than you should. This can be causing some of the health issues above. By testing your urine with your own pH test kit, you can determine this yourself.
I know my diet is too acidic, what can I do?
If your diet is overly acidic or you’ve tested yourself using a pH test and have results which confirm this, the best thing you can do is introduce more alkaline foods and supplements into your diet. We’ve created a free New Alkaline Diet 7 Day Menu Plan and Recipes for people who want to experience the benefits of an alkaline diet. Adding a supplement such as the AlkaBooster, our formulation of a balanced mix of the four pillars of alkaline health, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, will also assist in alkalising the body.
If I want to look like Elle Macpherson, will the New Alkaline Diet help me?
Elle looks amazing for her age; you wouldn’t even know she’s 51. Switching to a more alkaline diet and increasing your water intake of hydrogen rich water, does have the added benefit of slowing or even reversing the ageing process. I know this because I’m 68 but feel as though I’m in my 50s!

How many people blame dehydration?
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
If you suffer from at least one of the following symptoms, perhaps drinking more water may alleviate it. Yes, I know… we don’t do it. We (apparently) naturally blame everything but the simple idea that we are internally dried up. So let’s see wht sort of symptoms may indicate simple dehydration!
The colon requires a lot of water to eliminate waste properly. Without it, waste moves through the large intestine slowly or not at all. Few of us realise that there is a hierarchy of needs that affect constipation. An effect of poor gut health is leaky gut. When this happens, we have bacteria, fermented matter and acidic food waste leaking into ur abdominal cavity, wreaking havoc. The body knows what to do about this problem. It ‘washes’ the gut. But if it hasn’t got enough water to wash it effectively it doesn’t give up. It looks for water wherever it is in the body. And guess where it finds it? Yes. In the faeces. It sucks water from the faeces because its need for water is higher than the need for loose stools.
It’s no secret that water can aid in weight loss, and not getting enough water will cause your body to pack on the pounds. We came across a recent study of hydrogen rich water where two groups of obese men changed nothing except the type of water they drank. Yes, the H2 water men lost weight.
When we don’t get enough water, the enzymatic activity in the body slows down, resulting in fatigue. EVERYTHING works better with water!
4. High Cholesterol
The body produces more cholesterol to prevent water loss from the cells when we are dehydrated. Weird!
Dry skin is one of the first signs of dehydration. We get so many reports of people on our water being told by friends that they ‘look juicier’.We can attribute premature wrinkles, psoriasis, dermatitis and discoloration to dehydration because it makes the skin more susceptible to these issues. You are no longer capable of properly eliminating toxins through the pores.
Histamine increases as our hydration levels decrease, and airways are restricted in order to conserve water.
7. Bladder & Kidney
Toxins build up when we don’t have an adequate intake of water, and may lead to infection, inflammation and pain in our bladder and kidneys. We wash everything we eat off every day, then we allow an ‘unwashed’ environment into which we load our cleanly served food. Nuts!
8. Blood Pressure
when we are dehydrated blood thickens and leads to increased blood pressure.
9. Premature Aging
Chronic dehydration can weaken all of our organs including our skin. Staying hydrated ‘juices up’ up the skin cells and helps us to appear more youthful.
10. Digestive Issues
Lack of water and alkaline minerals can wreak havoc on our digestive systems, resulting in ulcers, gastritis and acid reflux.
11. Joint Pain or Stiffness
Joint pain and stiffness may be a result of a lack of water,. Water is used to cushion joints and help them move properly.
Ok.. So much water should you be drinking?
There are so many recommendations, but rather like the ‘old’ alkaline diet, much of the recommendations are empirical in nature. i.e. they are merely copies of another website which is a copy of another website…
Our recommendation changes as we learn and confirm more. But here’s what we say.
Take it easy, but increase your water (not water in beverages, WATER!) You’ll pee more as your body readjusts its OS to the new input, and that will take time to rebalance itself. But slowly increase. I like 3 litres a day. Other people, two. Some say up to eight, but I am assuming they have a fully kitted out toilet so they can read books or watch TV! They’re going to spend a lot of their day in it. After all, that’s EIGHT kilos of water that has to end up somewhere!
How much do we lose daily?
3 litres through breathing, sweating, urinating and defecating. It’s pretty ‘Duh-Oh!’ that consuming less than what you are losing must lead to at least one of the above problems.
Equally obviously, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, exercising strenuously or living in a hot climate you should aim to drink even more than the minimum.
I’m not going into a big sales speech here, but another ‘Duh-Oh moment is the simple truth that if water’s purpose it to continually fulfil your need to detox, then drinking toxic water is dumb.
Some water ionizer vendors claim that their water hydrates more effectively, quoting but not linking to Japanese scientific studies. We believed it ourselves for a long, long time. Today we believe that alkaline water is definitely better than mineral-poor water. But that really has little to do with electronic water ionizers that only ever give you the alkaline minerals already in the tap water you have in your home. We looked at a metastudy of over 100 separate studies to come to this conclusion.
Vendors also say a water ionizer makes alkaline minerals more bioavailable through microclustering. There is no basis for these claims.
What we can say is that by infusing H2 into purified water, all sorts of health effects may be possible, but this blog isn’t the place to make these claims. if you search on molecular hydrogen institute you’ll be able to research this claim for yourself.
