The US National Institute of Mental Health says we now have over 40 million Americans affected by a mental or emotional condition. Then there is the other 50 million who suffer from intermittent bouts of anxiety and depression.
Wow. That’s nearly one third of the US population with mental health issues.
Scary? Damn right it is!
NIMH says just over 50% of adults with a serious mental illness get treatment .
This typically includes inpatient care (7.5 %) and outpatient therapy (40.5%), but the ‘top dog’ is prescription drugs (antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs).
Although people do achieve relief of their symptoms—side effects can be far worse than the original condition.
Think… suicidal thoughts or actions, the development of tics, liver damage, violent, aggressive or homicidal behavior and impaired immune function, to name a few.
What no-one talks about Neurotransmitters
Google how your brain works, and you’ll begin to understand why mental health conditions make a lot more sense…and you can see that there are other (safer) ways to deal with them!
Billions of cells in my brain talk to each other, exchanging information in the form of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.
If brain cell ‘Fred’ wants to send a message to brain cell ‘Wilma’, Fred releases the proper neurotransmitter. The neurotransmitter floats across a miniscule space between the two cells (the synaptic cleft) and the receiving cell, Wilma, “catches” the message in one or more of its “catcher’s mitts” (neuroreceptors).
And it happens at the speed of light – or at last it should if everything is working to the max.
When the message is delivered, the leftover neurotransmitters need a cleanup. This happens in one of two ways:
- They are broken down by enzymes, pass through the liver and end up in your urine or feces
- They get sucked up by little “vacuums” (reuptake pumps) to be recycled.
The Big Stars of your Neurotransmitter Inner World.
Although your body has over 50 neurotransmitters, you do have an A-Team. Here are the nutrients they are made of: We’ll look at the common and less common ones and what happens if you are short on them.
Function: Regulates your appetite, mood, sensory perception and immune function.
Deficiency: Depression, eating disorders, chronic pain, sleep disorders, emotional problems, anxiety and aggression.
Food: Amino acid tryptophan, B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc and iron.
Gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA)
Function: Calming effect on your mood.
Deficiency:Anxiety, over-excitability, seizure disorders and mania.
The recipe: The amino acid glutamate, vitamin B6, manganese, biotin, lysine and taurine.
Function: Controls your arousal, movement and hormonal responses.
What deficiency can cause: Muscular and cell rigidity, tremors and Parkinson’s disease.
Food: The amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine, vitamin B6, folic acid, iron, copper, magnesium and zinc.
Function: Controls electrical activity of your brain and is vital for memory storage.
Deficiency: Memory loss, depression, confusion and muscle incoordination.
Food: The amino acid choline, vitamins B6, B5 and B3, manganese, lysine and threonine.
Medications method of ‘helping’ neurotransmitters.
Psychiatric drugs achieve their intended effect by artificially manipulating our neurotransmitter levels.
Some antidepressants block our reuptake pumps from vacuuming up leftover serotonin. The drug forces serotonin to hang around between our brain cells, making us feel “happier.”
This can get nasty. It can eventually cause you to have too much serotonin—which can make your depression even worse!
By encouraging proper levels of neurotransmitters in your body, you could feel a whole lot better from mental health conditions!
Ways you can naturally help support your neurotransmitters…and your state of mind!
- A whole foods diet with lots of organic fresh fruits, green vegetables, grassfed meats, line caught fish, real grassfed butter, coco and olive oil, eggs. These foods that will load us up with the proper nutrients for your body to make your neurotransmitters. We ‘bring home’ our manufacturing process.
- Drop the soda, sugars and refined carbs. These leach essential nutrients from your bodyand are seriously addictive, even causing many mental conditions. If you don’t believe it, stop eating them fopr 2 weeks a see what your bosy and mind make up to force you back onto them!
- Encourage a healthy gut with probiotic supplementation or fermented foods. The majority of your body’s serotonin is created in your gut. From there it is sent express to your brain. Gut health is crucial to brain health!
- Make sure you have enough vitamin B12. B12 supports a process in your body called methylation. Methylation is vital to the formation of many neurotransmitters, and methylation abnormality is a factor behind mental health problems.
- Get sources of Omega-3 essential fatty acids like wild caught fatty fish. Omega-3 EFAs are vital to brain health. Supplement with a purified fish oil formula if your diet is lacking in this area.
- The new kid on the block is molecular Hydrogen. How does Molecular Hydrogen fit into this picture? Let’s look in more detail.
From the 700+ scientific studies so far, one benefit claim clearly emerges: one of the main actions of H2 is to improve cell signalling; in the brain, cell signalling is done by neurotransmitters.
We certainly need the nutrients mentioned above to make neurotransmitters, but it may not be enough. We also need the body to recognise that the neurotransmitter needs to be made. It has to send the message that the nutrients need to be used for that particular purpose. This message delivery is carried via cell signalling, and with our modern lifestyle and constant sate of low to mediam level toxicity, occasionally the body needs help with maintaining optimal cell signalling. H2, it appears, can do this.
A good number of studies have now shown H2 can increase a number of neurotransmitter levels, including dopamine, epinephrine and acetylcholine. In the studies, scientists were able to conclude that increase in dopamine levels were sufficient to lead to a reduction in Parkinson’s symptoms.
In addition to molecular hydrogen’s cell signalling role, it is also anti-inflammatory. This is important to our brain as well as our body. Between the brain and the rest of the body is the blood brain barrier (BBB). This semi-permeable membrane, when functioning optimally, allows the brain’s essential nutrients and neurotransmitters into the brain, and keeps everything else out. However, in less than optimal health, the BBB can become more porous and let things into the brain that are detrimental, such as free-radicals and heavy metals. This increase in porosity can be due to inflammation.
Heavy metals and excess free-radicals in the brain may contribute to the development of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimers. They can not only destroy the neurotransmitters. They can damage the receptors. We certainly need sufficient neurotransmitter levels, and proper functioning receptors for proper brain function. By decreasing inflammation at the BBB, molecular hydrogen can help reduce free-radical damage to the neurotransmitters and their receptors.
Molecular Hydrogen is also a selective antioxidant, so it mops up free radicals.
Therefore, in addition to its role in helping neurotransmitters and their receptors talk to each other, and keeping the bad guys out of the brain, it can also help mop up any of the bad guys that do happen to find their way into the brain.
Scientific Studies suggest that Molecular Hydrogen can:
- Help increase the levels of neurotransmitters
- Protect neurotransmitter receptors from damage
- Improve the function of the blood brain barrier
- Reduce free-radical damage in the brain. This video is a discussion between friends about the effects of molecular hydrogen on depression and brain.

The research is in… and it’s saying that many cases of depression are actually caused by an allergic reaction to inflammation.
In NOVA mag, Tim de Chant wrote:
“Inflammation is our immune system’s natural response (my underlining) to injuries, infections, or foreign compounds. When triggered, the body pumps various cells and proteins to the site through the blood stream, including cytokines, a class of proteins that facilitate intercellular communication. It also happens that people suffering from depression are loaded with cytokines.”
Inflammation is caused by (among other things like walking into a glass door) obesity, high sugar diets, high quantities of trans fats, and unhealthy diets in general.
Researchers and doctors are opening up an exciting new dimension in the fight against what has become a global epidemic. By treating the inflammatory symptoms of depression — instead of the neurological ones.
The Guardian writes:
“The good news is that the few clinical trials done so far have found that adding anti-inflammatory medicines to antidepressants not only improves symptoms, but also increases the proportion of people who respond to treatment. There is also some evidence that omega 3 and curcumin, an extract of the spice turmeric, might have similar effects. Both are available over the counter and might be worth a try, although as an add-on to any prescribed treatment – there’s definitely not enough evidence to use them as a replacement.”
Eleanor Morgan of VICE adds: “Cytokines skyrocket during depressive episodes and, in those with bipolar disorder, halt in remission. The fact that ‘normal,’ healthy people can become temporarily anxious or depressed after receiving an inflammatory vaccine — like typhoid — lends further credence to the theory. There are even those who think we should re-brand depression altogether as an infectious disease … Carmine Pariante, a Kings College psychiatrist who is quoted in The Guardian report, says that we’re between five and ten years away from a blood test that can measure levels of inflammation in depressed people. If both Pariante’s estimate and the inflammation-depression theory are correct, we could potentially be just five years from an adequate ‘cure’ for depression.”
Ian: Well, well, again and again we are hearing about the anti inflammation power of curcurmin. And we know why. Cucurmin generates H2 in the body. Are we dosing up on curcurmin? No. We are talking H2 tablets in water. Easier, faster, better.
Constipation? Acne? Obesity? Listless? Cholesterol? Joint Pain? Blood Pressure? The One Thing you can do today to help.
When you have a newly emerging health challenge, where do you look for answers? Diet? Stress? Toxic living?
How many people blame dehydration?
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
If you suffer from at least one of the following symptoms, perhaps drinking more water may alleviate it. Yes, I know… we don’t do it. We (apparently) naturally blame everything but the simple idea that we are internally dried up. So let’s see wht sort of symptoms may indicate simple dehydration!
The colon requires a lot of water to eliminate waste properly. Without it, waste moves through the large intestine slowly or not at all. Few of us realise that there is a hierarchy of needs that affect constipation. An effect of poor gut health is leaky gut. When this happens, we have bacteria, fermented matter and acidic food waste leaking into ur abdominal cavity, wreaking havoc. The body knows what to do about this problem. It ‘washes’ the gut. But if it hasn’t got enough water to wash it effectively it doesn’t give up. It looks for water wherever it is in the body. And guess where it finds it? Yes. In the faeces. It sucks water from the faeces because its need for water is higher than the need for loose stools.
It’s no secret that water can aid in weight loss, and not getting enough water will cause your body to pack on the pounds. We came across a recent study of hydrogen rich water where two groups of obese men changed nothing except the type of water they drank. Yes, the H2 water men lost weight.
When we don’t get enough water, the enzymatic activity in the body slows down, resulting in fatigue. EVERYTHING works better with water!
4. High Cholesterol
The body produces more cholesterol to prevent water loss from the cells when we are dehydrated. Weird!
Dry skin is one of the first signs of dehydration. We get so many reports of people on our water being told by friends that they ‘look juicier’.We can attribute premature wrinkles, psoriasis, dermatitis and discoloration to dehydration because it makes the skin more susceptible to these issues. You are no longer capable of properly eliminating toxins through the pores.
Histamine increases as our hydration levels decrease, and airways are restricted in order to conserve water.
7. Bladder & Kidney
Toxins build up when we don’t have an adequate intake of water, and may lead to infection, inflammation and pain in our bladder and kidneys. We wash everything we eat off every day, then we allow an ‘unwashed’ environment into which we load our cleanly served food. Nuts!
8. Blood Pressure
when we are dehydrated blood thickens and leads to increased blood pressure.
9. Premature Aging
Chronic dehydration can weaken all of our organs including our skin. Staying hydrated ‘juices up’ up the skin cells and helps us to appear more youthful.
10. Digestive Issues
Lack of water and alkaline minerals can wreak havoc on our digestive systems, resulting in ulcers, gastritis and acid reflux.
11. Joint Pain or Stiffness
Joint pain and stiffness may be a result of a lack of water,. Water is used to cushion joints and help them move properly.
Ok.. So much water should you be drinking?
There are so many recommendations, but rather like the ‘old’ alkaline diet, much of the recommendations are empirical in nature. i.e. they are merely copies of another website which is a copy of another website…
Our recommendation changes as we learn and confirm more. But here’s what we say.
Take it easy, but increase your water (not water in beverages, WATER!) You’ll pee more as your body readjusts its OS to the new input, and that will take time to rebalance itself. But slowly increase. I like 3 litres a day. Other people, two. Some say up to eight, but I am assuming they have a fully kitted out toilet so they can read books or watch TV! They’re going to spend a lot of their day in it. After all, that’s EIGHT kilos of water that has to end up somewhere!
How much do we lose daily?
3 litres through breathing, sweating, urinating and defecating. It’s pretty ‘Duh-Oh!’ that consuming less than what you are losing must lead to at least one of the above problems.
Equally obviously, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, exercising strenuously or living in a hot climate you should aim to drink even more than the minimum.
I’m not going into a big sales speech here, but another ‘Duh-Oh moment is the simple truth that if water’s purpose it to continually fulfil your need to detox, then drinking toxic water is dumb.
Some water ionizer vendors claim that their water hydrates more effectively, quoting but not linking to Japanese scientific studies. We believed it ourselves for a long, long time. Today we believe that alkaline water is definitely better than mineral-poor water. But that really has little to do with electronic water ionizers that only ever give you the alkaline minerals already in the tap water you have in your home. We looked at a metastudy of over 100 separate studies to come to this conclusion.
Vendors also say a water ionizer makes alkaline minerals more bioavailable through microclustering. There is no basis for these claims.
What we can say is that by infusing H2 into purified water, all sorts of health effects may be possible, but this blog isn’t the place to make these claims. if you search on molecular hydrogen institute you’ll be able to research this claim for yourself.
Today I was sent a new report on Turmeric says a compound in turmeric promotes stem cell proliferation and differentiation in the brain.
The findings suggest aromatic turmerone could be a future drug candidate for treating neurological disorders, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Here’s the study.
Research shows that turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and antioxidant properties. Inflammation, if left untreated, can become a chronic health issue. And unlike aspirin or ibuprofen, turmeric’s curcumin reduces inflammation naturally, without damaging the liver or kidneys.
Healthier Talk reports:
“It has been found especially helpful in treating conditions like arthritis, sports injuries, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, tendonitis and various autoimmune diseases. Some research even suggests that curcumin may also help those suffering asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and, yes, even cancer.”
We’ve looked at Turmeric closely mainly because of its reported ability to create molecular hydrogen in the body. In fact the benefits of molecular hydrogen evidenced in all the new scientific studies seem to parallel everything published about Turmeric. Erica, our inhouse naturopath, makes the point that the difficulty of using Turmeric. It seems its absorbability is rather poor.
We talk a lot about the effect of acidifying foods on this website, and the alkaline diet.
Cassie and I and the AlkaWay team have benefited greatly by modifying our diet to include far more greens and other alkalinizing foods, and intentionally cutting our sugars and carbs, both of which are acidifying. I can say that I enjoy my food more than ever, eat less, and have a far more balanced mood variation than I’ve ever had. If you know someone with varying ‘upsandowns‘ through the day I can guarantee they are over-acidic. But there’s something more that can undo all our good alkalizing food effects. It’s stress.
So.. why is stress so damaging?
Stress And Alkalinity
Stress acidifies your body by stimulating production of the hormone cortisol.
But that’s not all. There are other side effects of stress.
We craves sugary foods when we are stressed, according to a Brazilian study. We have all experienced this. That’s why we call our ‘sweetie treats’ “comfort food”!
In the study, 31 of the 57 participants exhibited symptoms of stress, while the remaining 26 had no symptoms. The study concluded that “Stressed women are more prone to [sweet cravings]…” Why? Most likely due to the effect of stress on the endocrine system – levels of leptin, the “hunger hormone,” were higher in participants who were stressed and craving sugar.
Sugar is a super acidifier, and – get this – it actually destroys bone cartilage by combining with protein and creating degenerative compounds known as AGEs (Advanced Glycation End products).Sugar definitely ‘AGEs” our bones.
And that’s not all. Sugar increases calcium excretion in the urine.
You know that stressed and anxious feeling? Those stomach pains have a source. It’s stress affecting your thyroid, And… the hormones regulating your metabolism also get thrown off. Your digestion takes the effects of this disruption, making it difficult to ‘get things moving’.
In that situation, our body’s regular toxin removal process is ‘out of whack’. When we can’t absorb waste, poisons begin reabsorbing via the intestinal wall creating an acid tide beyond the colon.
Feeling sluggish is a drag. Stress can contribute to this feeling of exhaustion for a number of reasons.
Stress precipitates worry and anxiety, keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep. But you won’t rest for another reason. And it’s cortisol as the culprit once more. Stress triggers the production cortisol. This is what gives your body what it needs to respond in its ‘fight or flight’ response: increased heartbeat, dilated pupils to see more dangerous dinosaurs, tight muscles that are ready to run if need be, and more O2 to your brain for lightning reactions.
We can’t remain in this state, so the cortisol eases off, and we crash.
here’s a super obvious fact that we hear over and over and amazingly, IGNORE.
Regular exercise iWILL keep our energy levels up and cortisol levels regulated. It’s weird. You may be tired out, but the answer is right in front of you. Regular exercising several days a week will actually keep cortisol levels stable, so you have more energy in the end.
I know this one! Before I gave up gluten I’d have a bad back every six months, and every time it got worse! At the time, in my ignorance, it seemed not to have anything to do with strenuous activity or “throwing my back out.” Now I realise that beyond my diet remedy, it could simply be stress.
Stress tightens your muscles in the flight or fight response, and our muscles react by aches or pain. I sat at my computer for long periods each day, and my back and neck got very bad. Now as I write I’m standing and do so most of the day with a special computer stand. If I hadn’t done something about it, poor posture and spinal misalignment would be the result. I also make sure I stop, take a brisk walk and periodically stretch.
If stress causes sugar cravings, then reducing stress – and reducing sugar – would help weight loss.
Stress = Sugar = Weight = Stress = Sugar = Fat
In one study 61 women ate the same basic diet (high in sugar and fat).
After a year, they were evaluated for weight gain. It was discovered that those in the highest stress group gained more weight – especially abdominal fat – than those with less stress.
A recent study of obese men that changed nothing in their diet except the water they drank showed that just drinking hydrogen rich water allowed them to lose weight. The perfect diet supplement; Water!
6. Poor Memory
We all know that stress affects your brain, even more so traumatic stress. Your memory zone – the hippocampus –may actually decrease in size under prolonged stress. Unfortunately reduced brain function can or does often lead to reduced cognitive and analytic abilities – which translates into a depressed frame of mind. As we all know from the many people who have preached it to us, a positive attitude makes for a better life, but when you understand that stress actually shrinks your brain this becomes more than a theory. You can see the mechanics of the problem.
You have to beat it before you lose it.
7. Hair Loss
It’s not only cortisol that gives us our stress response. There’s another group of hormones that spike: androgens. Stress itself will cause one particular androgens, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to spike, and this one, can affect your hair follicles and even induce hair loss. Ever notice how some people’s hair always looks lifeless?
Luckily it can be reversed. Eating and drinking a pH-balanced diet and exercising daily can certainly help rebalance these hormones.
Alkalizing = Bone Renewal and involves our whole body
Go to your local doctor. Ask him or her about your osteoporosis, but don’t wait for your doctor tor ask you about your stress levels.
Believe me, I know this from personal experience. His or her job is to identify and treat symptoms, and to target a particular body part or system – such as the bones and bone turnover – with drugs. A bit like applying weed killer to improve your lettuces in the garden!
So.. what is your alkalizing strategy? Do you have one? Do you even know you need one? Don’t feel bad about not knowing. You are still in the majority, but take comfort in the fact that you now know that you can do something…. NOW!
You can begin with simple alkaline electrolytes.
You can add some alkaline sachets to your water bottle.
You can take on an alkaline diet weight loss challenge.
You can buy an alkalizing jug.
You can order alkaline greens shake in powder form.
You can order powdered green alkalizer.
You can install your own alkaline UltraStream.
You can stop eating sugar.. and carbs.. and wheat.. and.. and!
Or you can do nothing and wonder.. has my brain already changed?
Whatever you do, let us know about your own alkalizing story. We share stories because we help people like you by sharing!
From Cassie Bond,
I’d like to talk about two of the most important reasons I believe people give up using the program. It’s often those of us with health challenges that do give up before we even get to see the benefits.
I want to talk about the problems I have had, and have seen other people encounter in the first stages of this program. I will talk about the changes that we go through as our bodies adjust from a glucose burning body to a fat burning body. The other important thing I am going to talk about today are the “healing reactions” we encounter on our journey to good health. These healing reactions are another reason why we give up and go back to a high carbohydrate diet.
In the first few weeks to 2 months of starting the alkaline paleo program, we will encounter an uncomfortable period of change over, from a glucose burning body to a fat burning body. This period of change over is inevitable as the body changes from using one fuel as a source of energy to using another. The length of time this change will last depends on our personal genetics and our health history.
These changeover symptoms are usually just plain tiredness and sometimes there are flu like symptoms also which may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. There are those of of us who will hardly even notice the difference but most us will have a sense of real tiredness, we will urinate a lot, have cramps and we will have foggy thinking.
One of the most important things to do to ease the symptoms in this adjustment period is to make sure we are getting plenty of Celtic sea Salt. This will make the process so much easier. The salt will help with the excess urination, tiredness and muscle cramping.
The changeover of the bodies fuels can also cause some depression. This is because the chemicals in the brain are readjusting as they are no longer receiving the opioid like reactions from the wheat and the dairy we have been eating, nor are we getting the blood sugar level highs from the high carbohydrates foods.
But don’t worry, I can guarantee these highs, and of course the inevitable lows that follow, will be replaced by a much more calm and stable mind when you have gone through the initial adjustments.
We need to make sure we can get plenty of rest in this changeover period as the body is doing a lot of work to get us well. It’s a good idea at this stage to start nurturing ourselves in ways that don’t include the old habits of eating high carb comfort foods. We can start doing really nice things for ourselves like taking a walk, reading a great book, having an Epsom salt bath, keeping a journal, meditating, watching a funny movie or just taking a nap.
Now the other reason we may give up the alkaline paleo diet is this. We all believe that when we start eating better we should start getting progressively better from our health challenges. This seems to make total sense right?
No, it’s not like this and I will tell you why.
Many of us who try the alkaline paleo program do so to heal from chronic health challenges that could have been present in the body anywhere from 6 months to many many years to even a lifetime.
When the body is chronically unwell it’s only option for our survival will mean putting some not imminently life threatening health challenges into deeper levels of our body. It leaves them there, till hopefully one day, it will be strong enough to deal with them.
As the body gets the nutrition and cleansing it needs it begins unwinding the deeper layer issues and with this unwinding we may feel ‘sick’ with different symptoms which can be confusing if we don’t understand what is happening.
I call these symptoms ‘healing reactions’ . Healing reactions occur because the body is finally able to deal with these deeper layer issues. Healing Reactions show us that we are now capable of deep healing and they are a great sign.
How can we tell whether what is happening to us is a ‘Healing Reaction’ or that we are just plain getting sicker?
First it is important to know that we must stay on the diet and not cheat to really know if these reaction are healing reactions If we cheat there will be reactions in the body to the cheat foods and these are not healing reactions. These reactions can be quite strong as your body says absolutely “no” to the cheat food and lets you know it. Cheat reactions can last for days after the cheat.
This is how to tell the difference between a ‘healing reaction’ or just plain getter sicker.
Just before we get healing reactions we will start to feel much better and will have more energy. Then in the next day or couple of days, we will find a ‘healing reaction ‘ will occur and we won’t feel good or we will even feel downright awful. Then after maybe a few day to a week we will start feeling good again. This will repeat until all our health challenges are gone.
At this point I would like to say, if you are at all worried about any reactions then it is important that you check with your doctor as it might be something that needs quick attention.
I have heard some people say that they aren’t doing well on a low carb diet and so they start to eat potato or white rice to get more carbs and then say they start to feel a lot better.
Watch out for this, as what is happening is that the healing reactions are actually being halted from the high carb intake and these people are also getting a blood sugar high.
If you do feel the need for more carbs eat some more vegetables, such as cauliflower, zucchini or eggplant as these are carbohydrates but they will not spike your blood sugar nor stop the healing reactions. Spiked blood sugar causes an ageing cascade in the body and is counter productive to healing and longevity.
I hope this helps to bring some reassurance that its ok to have healing reactions . I can honestly say I have now observed enough absolute healing in people from chronic ill health to know that these ‘healing reactions’ are a normal part of the process of total healing
If you let me know of your healing reactions I can help you with ways you can ease some of the discomfort. We really don’t want to resort to drugs if we can help it as this would be counter productive to the healing process.

Here are the 13 reasons why our bodies, if given the right nutrition, will be so much more alkaline when including meat in the diet.
1. On the Alkaline Paleo diet stress is greatly relieved. Stress is the greatest acidifier and getting the right nutrition will calm the mind enormously.
It’s been both mine and Ian’s experience that stress is no longer nearly the problem it was prior to going on this Alkaline Paleo diet. By getting all of our amino acids so necessary from high quality protein (meat, eggs or fish)and the good fats we need, we’ve created a platform for the body to have the brain function as it should. Amino acids from good proteins are essential to a healthy psych. There are studies that show that many psychiatric disorders can be reversed when amino acids are supplied adequately to the diet.
The Alkaline Paleo protocol will help to create a really calm and clear mind, a mind that doesn’t get caught on the small stuff and with the big stuff is able to creatively find way through and beyond. A calm mind created more alkalinity.
And a calm mind allows for deep breathing. When we are stressed we shallow breathe which means we don’t eliminate the carbon dioxide so well from our lungs. Carbon dioxide comes from carbonic acid which is acidifying and part of the way the body gets rid of excess acids. Depression which doesn’t allow good thinking has become something that is very rare for us now and only lasts for a very short time before we get to understand what it is about and then do what it takes to move quickly through it.
And stable blood sugar levels from the Alkaline Paleo diet ends the up and down mood swings that come from fluctuating blood sugars. Ian used to get really grumpy when he didn’t eat on time as his blood sugar would get low if he missed a meal. Now because his blood sugar is balanced due to Alkaline Paleo diet he can now miss a whole meal and remains a happy boy!
2. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we don’t eat grains. Grains are much more acidifying to the body than meat.
Meat is acidifing but the most acidifying food (apart from sugar) is grains. One of the things about any grains is they are not easily digested because of many factors including phytates, lectins, gluten (forms of gluten are found in all grains) and high carbohydrate levels. When foods are difficult to digest this sets up inflammation in the gut which then promotes gut dysbiosis and finally inflammation throughout the body.
Through incomplete digestion in the intestines, grains cause inflammation. Inflammation causes stress and therefore more bodily acidification.
One way to gauge acidity is to measure acid-induced calcium loss in the urine. A study by the Uni of Toronto examined the effect of increasing gluten consumption with the level of calcium loss in the urine. An incredible 63 percent increase in calcium loss occurred with an increase of gluten from bread. About 10,000 years ago our Paleo ancestors ate meats, vegetables and a small amount of fruit, nuts and roots. This formerly alkaline human diet pH balance shifted to the acid side with the introduction of grains, especially wheat.
3. On an Alkaline Paleo diet sugars, the most acidic foods of all, are almost eliminated and cravings for sugar just disappear!
If we do decide to eat berries we will be ingesting some acidity and sugar from these fruit, but for the most part, with the Alkaline Paleo diet, Ian and I just prefer savoury foods now. Our sweet tooth has just faded away. No more cravings. This doesn’t mean there isn’t an occasional foray into the fruit world but where we craved sugar and fruit before, it is now just a nice thing to eat a tiny bit of fruit every now and again – as it would have been with our Palaeolithic ancestors.
4. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we need only a small amount of meat, eggs or fish with every meal.
Compared with the amount of grains, nut and legumes we need to consume to get enough nutrition without eating meat, the amount of meat, eggs or fish we need is comparably much smaller in sheer bulk. This means we are not ingesting nearly as much acidic foods.
5. On the Alkaline Paleo diet there are other factors in meat that lessen its acidity.
In his book ‘Wheat Belly’ Dr William Davis tells us that:
“New research suggest that meats have other effects when ingested that partially negate the acid load.
“Animal protein exerts a bone-strengthening effect through stimulation of the hormone insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which triggers bone growth and mineralization.
The net effect of proteins from meat, despite their acid-generating properties, is that of increasing bone health. Children, adolescents, and the elderly who increase their meat intake show increased bone calcium content and improved measures of bone strength.”
6. On the Alkaline Paleo diet overall food consumption lessens, due to satiety from eating healthy fats, and less food consumption means less acidity in the body.
Eating too much is very acidifying no matter how alkaline a food is. When the stomach and digestive system is overloaded it puts tremendous stress on the body to deliver the saliva, hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile, digestive enzymes and all the other hormones and enzymes needed for digestion. We all know what it’s like to be over-full. We feel awful. The body is in an enormous amount of stress trying to deliver what is needed to digest this surplus of food and we know what stress does – it acidifies! Dairy – especially plain milk – is acidic and so is cheese.
7. On the Alkaline Paleo we eat very little dairy products. Dairy products are acid making in the body.
Dairy is very hard to give up as it has a opioid like effect in the brain which will cause cravings. Why do I mention this? Being addicted to any substance drugs or drug like food causes a stress reaction in the body and stress is acidifying.
Dairy is usually a part of a vegetarian diet as it is one of the few ways that a vegetarian gets enough quality protein, and fat soluble vitamins such a Vitamin A, K2, D3 and the vitamin B12.
If someone is vegan and doesn’t eat these foods they quickly become deficient in essential amino acids. These vitamins & amino acids will need to be supplemented in pill form in order to get these nutrients. Is this an optimal diet if you need supplements to survive?
What happens if you are vegetarian and have a food sensitivity to dairy? Unless we supplement with a large amount of eggs we will have a lot of deficiencies, we will get sick as vegetarians and vegans often do, despite their alkaline diet. I know, I was one of them. Bringing back meat into my diet allowed me to get nutrients I was badly missing.
8. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we drink leafy green vegetable juices. These are very alkalizing due to the high potassium levels – we love them.
We drink (when we are back in Australia) a green vegetable juice every day. We don’t add carrots, beetroot or fruit as they are high in sugar. Fruit juice is acidic also. We have juices of kale, celery, cabbage, cucumbers, parsley, lettuce, coriander (detoxes mercury) and some ginger.
The alkalinity of the palaeolithic diet has been estimated to be 6 to 9 times more alkaline than the modern diet, thanks to its large potassium salt intake from vegetable sources.
It is thought that our ancestors’ urine pH was as high as 7.5 to 9.0 compared to the our modern range of 4.4 to 7.0. Our Paleo forebears also lived in a much cleaner world where his air was clean and rich in oxygen, with clean food and (most likely alkaline) pure water, stress would have been limited to those moments where they were hunting – or being hunted!
9. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we have stable blood sugar levels from eating good fats and no high carb foods.
Even blood sugar levels are really important as spikes in blood sugar are very acidifying and cause glycation which cause the ageing process. Diabetics are an example of the effects of high blood sugars levels as they age much faster than those with healthy blood sugar levels.
10. On the Alkaline Paleo diet drinking alkaline ionized water alone will increase alkalinity – and help to negate the effects of AGE’s (free radicals).
Unlike our Paleo ancestors” world, in today’s world we need all the help we can to stay alkaline and drinking alkaline water is an easy and great way of achieving this. Alkaline water is a rich sourse of antioxidants. Antioxidants are fantastic for negating AGE’s in the blood stream thereby increasing the ability of the body to remain youthful and healthy.
11. On the Alkaline Paleo diet Candida Albicans and other bad gut bacteria, with their excretion of very acidic waste, will no longer thrive.
12. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we eat more vegetables now than we did as vegetarians. We don’t fill up on bulky grains, pulses or nuts so there is more room for fresh vegetables.
13. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we eat very little fruits as they are high in sugar and not nutrient dense.
We don’t eat much fruit as I have stated before it is acidifying due to the large amount of sugars now found in it.
Fruit is more like a treat than a necessary part of the diet, to be eaten sparingly
This is what Dr Kate Shanahan, author of “Deep Nutrition” says when she speaks at Sean Croxtons’ Real Food Summit: “I should have corrected myself to say… (fruit is.)..mostly empty calories. They’ve been bred for sweetness and while fruits do of course convey nutrients to our bodies the nutrient to calorie ratio of most vegetable is far greater than that of most fruits.”
This has been so good to write and I hope I have helped to make it clear that contrary to our modern belief that eating meat = acidity that actually eating meat= great nutrition and more alkalinity. I would love any comments on the above or any ideas you might have about why the Alkaline Paleo diet might contribute towards alkalinity.
