1 cup warm water.
How to make it…
Mix the lemon juice, turmeric and honey into your cup of warm water. Stir well. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and continue to stir your morning elixir as you drink it (this will ensure that the turmeric doesn’t settle at the bottom of your cup.
Turmeric with its main active ingredient, curcumin, may be that one healthy addition to your morning routine you’ve been looking for. I enjoy this elixir nearly every morning with fruit, which adds a sweet, delicious twist.

I’ve identified a telltale for MLM approaches. And I gotta say, we get a few!
This morning it was ‘French Green Clay” and the big sell line was that the Israeli army uses it to get rid of chemical warfare effects.
Then (and this is my ‘telltale’ sign of an MLM approach).. there is the unbelievably good claim, usually of someone the doctors gave up on, who had some form of cancer, and who now runs ten miles a day.
I’m not saying it’s wrong. I’m just saying that like so many Australians we have a highly developed MLM alert sensor after countless approaches that look very similar to this one.
In this case, though, I remember that this particular clay is a good product. It does (as I remember) perform a valuable detox function.
French green clay is a substance that is used for external cosmetic treatments as well as some internal applications by practitioners of alternative medicine. It was used in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to treat a variety of skin problems and digestive disorders.
From the standpoint of mineralogy, French green clay belongs to a subcategory of clay minerals known as illite clays, the other two major groups being kaolinite and smectite clays. Clay minerals in general are important because they make up about 40 percent of such common rocks as shale, and they are the main components of soil. Illite clays are usually formed by weathering or by changes produced in aluminum-rich minerals by heat and acidic ground water. They often occur intermixed with kaolinite clays—which are typically used in the ceramics industry. Illite clays have been used successfully by environmental managers to remove such heavy metals as lead, cadmium, and chromium from industrial wastewater.
French green clay takes its name from the fact that rock quarries located in southern France enjoyed a virtual monopoly on its production until similar deposits of illite clays were identified in China, Montana, and Wyoming. The clay’s green color comes from a combination of ironoxides and decomposed plant matter, mostly kelp seaweed and other algae. Grey-green clays are considered less valuable than those with a brighter color. The other components of French green clay include a mineral known as montmorillonite, as well as dolomite, magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc , aluminum, silicon, copper, selenium , and cobalt.

You could assume brand new clothes are clean and safe to wear, but there’s quite a good chance you’ll come into contact with some pretty nasty stuff when you neglect to wash them beforehand.
You found something that looks good and fits great, so you put iton as soon as you get home because you’re so excited. Who hasn’t done that at some point? The Wall Street Journal interviewed Donald Belsito, the professor of dermatology at Columbia University, and it turns out that might not be such a great idea. Mitchell explains:
There are two major nasties when it comes to allergens in new clothing: dye and formaldehyde resin. Most synthetic textiles are colored with azo-aniline dyes, which can cause a severe skin reaction akin to poison ivy in the small population of people allergic to them. For others, reactions to dyes are less extreme, and may result in slightly inflamed, dry, itchy patches of skin…
Belsito also suggests that you think about where that shirt may have been before it became yours, and what might be already be in the fabric:
“I’ve seen cases of lice that were probably transmitted from trying on in the store, and there are certain infectious diseases that can be passed on through clothing. The other infestation I’ve seen from clothing is scabies.”
Yes, not every article of clothing is infected or infested, so DON’T PANIC.
It’s just an example of why it’s important to wash things before you put them on, especially if you’re buying something secondhand. Ms. Belsito recommends washing new clothing at least once with a double rinse before wearing, no matter what fabric you’re dealing with. Ian: Yet another source of acidifying toxins. can we really assume that without an active detoxification program in our lives that we can remain clean on the inside? European Food Safety Authority:
Hmm… seems they haven’t read their own name lately!
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published a new report: ‘The 2013 European Union report on pesticides in food’.
The report, shows the results for almost 81,000 food samples from 27 EU Member States, Iceland and Norway”.
Their Press Release of 12th March 2015 reports that:
“a combined total of 80,967 samples of a wide variety of processed and unprocessed food products were tested for the presence of 685 pesticides”.
It continues, “97.4% of the samples analysed fell within legal limits” but adds that,
“Residues of more than one pesticide (multiple residues) were found in 27.3% of samples”.
That’s one in four!!!! Muliple health and environmental NGOs say that EFSA does not examine the ‘cocktail effect’ of these residues on humans. Martin Dermine of Pesticide Action Network told Euractive,
“Providing statistics of single residue level in food is too simplistic”.
Ian: I totally agree. I cannot understand why people don’t understand that if we are ingesting toxins at this rate we don’t have a plan in place to continually detox – even something as basic as good hydration!

We’ve been going on for years about phthalates, the chemical mixed in with vinyl to make it soft and pliable. We noted previously what it was doing to men; now a new study finds that they are not too terrific for women either.

Phthalates strike again
We’ve been covering the impact of phthalates for years . They are chemicals that can be found in many soft, bendy plastics that are used in all kinds of household products (shower curtains, PVC flooring, etc, and they also end up in some processed food). Part of the problem is that phthalates additives are not well bound to plastics, so they are continuously released into the air or food or liquid. That’s why bendy, soft plastic tends to age badly and harden, becoming more brittle over time.
As if these chemicals weren’t worrying enough already for other reasons, a new study shows that phthalates might be having an impact on the libido of women by disrupting hormone signalling (they are already known to affect sexual function in men through other hormonal interactions). To figure this out, researchers tested the urine of 360 pregnant women in their 20s and 30s to determine what concentration of phthalates was present in their bodies, and then asked them about their sex drive.
The result? The women with the highest level of phthalates were 2.5x more likely to have low libido than those with the smallest concentration. This was considered statistically significant, and hopefully with more research we can determine exactly what is going on. In the meantime:
[Dr Emily Barrett, of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, in New York] recommends that women trying to get pregnant should avoid processed and fast food as the more processing that food goes through the more chance it has to come into contact with the chemicals.
This is because phthalates are endocrine disruptors, and they affect testosterone and, it now seems, estrogen.
This might be another argument in favor of organic food, as these chemicals are sometimes used in pesticides. Even better if there’s no packaging!
Ian: For me it’s just another HUGE reason to institute and maintain my own antitoxin program, including greens, and molecular hydrogen with lots of pure UltraStream water to move those accumulating toxins on and out!

Spring, an ideal time to detox

During winter we naturally tend to eat heavier and more warming foods. They are the foods we need to stay healthy, especially those in colder climes. We have evolved to do this. During our evolution (especially the ice age) and other times of food scarcity such strategies increased our chances of survival through a long cold winter.
However, when it gets to spring our need for warming foods decreases. By the end of September many of us are feeling a little sluggish, and not at all like the vibrantly alive active person we want to be come summer.
This makes early spring an ideal time to detox and kick start the body’s metabolism.
Any healthy detox programme looks at making long term lifestyle changes, and not just a couple of weeks of “being good”; however often those couple of weeks of being good are a great motivator to a healthier lifestyle.
In terms of a detox diet, it can be as simple as: If it comes in a packet or a tin, you don’t eat it.
The layout of most supermarkets makes this easy. If it’s around the edges then it is probably OK, if it is in the aisles, it probably isn’t. This means you eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables (seasonal of course), nuts and seeds as you want. One mistake many people make when detoxifying, is to not eat sufficient protein.
Protein is essential for (among other things) the liver to function, for the body to heal, for immune system and brain function. The ideal amount of protein per day is not something that can easily be ascertained and there is no magic amount. For many people about 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight is sufficient. However if you get a lot of exercise – especially strength training – then requirements are higher. If you are carrying extra weight, then basing protein amount on lean muscle mass or ideal weight is often a better indication.
The choice of protein is also something that gives rise to contention. For every positive of a protein source there are negatives, so it is important to find the ideal protein for the individual.
Most non animal sources of protein are deficient in at least one essential amino acid, so protein combining is essential.
Legumes are a great source of protein, but for those with a history of, or predisposition to thyroid issues, they can exacerbate any problems.
Soy is one of the most genetically modified and highly sprayed crops cultivated, so foods like tofu, unless organic, are often not a good choice for a detox protein. You’re trying to lose toxins, not add them!
Red meat is high in saturated fats, and though saturated fats (in moderation) are not as unhealthy as we have been led to believe, red meat, even if organic is usually not the ideal protein when detoxifying. It just makes the digestive system have to work harder.
Seafood would be ideal in terms of amino acid balance and nutrients, as well as being easy on the digestive system, if our waters weren’t so polluted, so only eating smaller fish, the ones at the bottom of the food chain that haven’t accumulated as many toxins is a better choice.
For most people a protein supplement is not required and you should be able to get sufficient protein from the diet. However, if you are exercising and losing muscle, or recovering from exercise more slowly than normal then supplementation can be indicated.
Another group that may benefit from protein supplementation are those who are eating more than they should, or constantly feel hungry. Protein is more filling and leaves you satiated for longer than carbohydrates. So a protein shake between meals is ideal. For these people rice and pea proteins are usually a better option than whey protein. This is because whey protein has been found to increase the hormone Insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF1) which has been found to impede weight loss in people who are not getting sufficient exercise. As simple as it sounds, one of the most important parts of a detox is to drink sufficient good quality purified water. There is no point in trying to remove toxins from the body if, with every mouthful of water, you are retoxifying.
Adequately purified water that also has an increased amount of molecular hydrogen can certainly aid in a detox regime. Reducing the amount of chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, heavy metals and organic pesticides from water before drinking it is an obvious choice.
Hydrogen Rich Water
Increasing the intake of Molecular Hydrogen is not so straight forward. Hydrogen is, after all, the most abundant molecule in the universe. Molecular Hydrogen, consumed through drinking hydrogen rich water has been found to be an antioxidant, specific for the hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite – 2 very active, though thankfully short lived free radicals that the body has no other defence against. Excess levels of these free radicals can damage virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids and amino acids; are implicated in neurological autoimmune diseases and cannot be eliminated by an enzymatic reaction but require antioxidants.
Drinking Hydrogen rich Water can help to minimise the effects of these free radicals.
Molecular Hydrogen also increases the levels of some of the most important antioxidant enzymes the body produces, such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. These enzymes help keep the levels of free radicals in check and help prevent oxidative stress and the health conditions associated with it, such as heart disease, organ damage, age related memory decline, cancers and chronic fatigue. In addition these enzymes are an integral part of the body’s natural detoxification processes. They are essential to modify toxins into a form the body can easily eliminate.
As part of a detox regime increasing molecular hydrogen, and through this increasing the body’s natural antioxidant defences, allows more of the bodies resources to be used for healing, and eliminating toxins.

As part of a spring detox a supplement to help improve digestive function, support the liver and assist the body in eliminating toxins from the digestive tract through increasing peristaltic action and eliminating parasites can be invaluable in increasing vitality and overcoming that sluggish feeling. Ingredients to look for include the herbs wormwood, black walnut, pumpkin seed, milk thistle, olive leaf, pau d’arco, gentian, barberry, garlic, thyme and cloves. (Such supplements should be used short term only).
Garlic, thyme and cloves are all anti-microbial, thus can be beneficial in eliminating harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Wormwood, black walnut, pau d’arco are used as anti-parasitic herbs which also increase the action of the large intestine and have a laxative effect. A laxative can be an important part of any detox as sluggish bowel motions gives more time for faeces to ferment in the bowel which increases the toxic load on the body. Gentian is used to stimulate digestion, specifically the release of gastric acid and digestive enzymes. This increase in function can help to increase nutrient absorption, and overall action of the digestive tract.
So… to kick start your vitality a spring detox is strongly recommended.
For most people eating only fresh foods and drinking only water and herbal teas, and taking a short course of a supplement that can stimulate the body’s natural detoxification systems is sufficient. To optimise efforts, the water should be hydrogen rich and purified, the foods should be seasonal, local and organic, the supplement should support all the systems of elimination. If done properly a detox should not have side effects. If you do have the frequent side effects of headache, nausea and fatigue then you are probably detoxing too quickly and intensely. In this instance slow down everything you are doing, simply starting with drinking the best water is usually the best approach.

Answers to a couple of frequently asked detox questions
Is a detox is a waste of time and money if the body does this anyway?
Some people will attest that the body will naturally eliminate toxins and that a liver function test will identify any need to do anything to improve liver function. However, very rarely does the liver suddenly become damaged. Like every health condition, it takes time to develop. Thus it is often beneficial to give the liver some support a few times a year, depending on your lifestyle, to prevent major health conditions.
Should children detox?
In an ideal world, no. Children have not had the years of accumulating toxins and thus detoxing is not required. However, many of us live in a polluted world and our foods have higher levels of toxins than the body can cope with. For children with a less than ideal diet, and living in polluted areas a gentle detox may be indicated. For most children, eliminating all fluids other than water and mild herbal teas such as chamomile, and increasing fruit and vegetables (ideally organic) and ensuring sufficient good quality protein is sufficient. For children with conditions which may be associated with toxicity (such as some skin conditions, allergies, or fatigue) then a more complete approach may be required and a visit to a naturopath is strongly recommended.
What are good herbal teas to assist in a detox?
Good quality chamomile is a gentle and effective detox herb. Loose leaf chamomile, with the petals still attached will generally work better than teabags as the herb in the teabags has been processed a lot more and some of the therapeutic value is diminished. Another good herb is dandelion root (the leaf is a diuretic) which can stimulate the liver. For a combination of herbs try yellow dock, burdock, nettle and maybe a little ginger.
Garlic has antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial properties.

According to Dr Jay Goldstein, Director of the CFS Institute in the US, ‘Malic acid is safe, inexpensive and it should be considered a valid therapeutic approach for patients with CFS’.
So alkaline dieters, what do you do with that? I guess what we can say is that malic acis should be incl;uded in our 20% of our 80/20 alkaline/acid food intake!
A six-month study was conducted by scientists working at the Department of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Centre in the US, to examine the efficacy of 1,200mg of malic acid plus 300mg of magnesium a day on 24 fibromyalgia sufferers. Half of the patients were given the active treatment, while the other half only received placebo.
At the end of the study, all of the patients treated with malic acid and magnesium experienced significant improvements in their symptoms – including less pain, reduced muscle stiffness and a more positive mental outlook – without any side effects.
Dr Russell, who led the team of scientists, concluded: ‘The data suggest that malic acid and magnesium are safe and may be beneficial in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia. Future studies should use malic acid at this dose and continue the therapy for at least two months’.
A wide range of benefits
Heavy Metal Chelator
In addition to increasing energy levels, malic acid is also an effective metal chelator. It can bind to potentially toxic metals that may have accumulated in the body, such as aluminium or lead, and hence deactivate them, so our risk of toxicity is considerably reduced. I recently had a very interesting talk with a doctor friend. He had a patient he’s known for years call him up and tell him he had terrible gout. Most health experts now say that sugar has become number one public enemy for health conscious individuals now we as a society have slowly shifted away from smoking and tobacco products. The research, which was conducted at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, found that the increase in caloric intake associated with people who included several servings of fruit juice in their diet was directly tied to obesity and a host of other health problems.

Permit me to preface this article by saying I am NOT trying to sell you an Earthing mat! But I am going to open up a new way of looking at earthing in general.
Billed as a ‘new’ ailment for the modern electronic age, Electron Deficiency Syndrome is the state we can become when exposed continually to electric fields.
(Like sitting here with my laptop, typing).
From the hundreds of electrical fields we come into range of daily, we end up with a net positive electrical charge.
As you know, here at AlkaWay we are keen researchers of health with a strong leaning towards studying the difference between our paleolithic metabolism ‘then’ – in Paleolithic times, and how the same body responds to modern day stresses.
Certainly here is one such situation, where most of us live in an electrically supercharged environment that simply did not exist even a hundred years ago, much less ten thousand. It’s not hard to measure the charge we accumulate and it’s not hard to also measure the same charge after we ‘earth’ ourselves, as our Paleo ancestors did every time their bare foot touched the earth.
‘Earthing’ mats are being sold as the answer to a modern and real problem. Many of us live in rooms, offices, houses where we have no ability to ‘drain’ this accumulated charge back into the earth. So earthing mats are sold which allow us to ‘earth’ through our home electrical system’s earth wire.
As I learned more about earthing and studied the very positive results from recent university tests, in a report on mercola.com, two things stood out.
1. Inflammation seems to be the major effect of Electron Deficiency Syndrome, and as Dr Mercola says,
“If you Google the word “inflammation,” you’ll come up with more than 62 million links. This is indicative of just how much of a problem inflammation is. Inflammation is the root of virtually ALL of our chronic diseases. So, the question you should ask next is, what’s CAUSING all of this inflammation? It may very well be a deficiency of electrons—at least, this may be one of the most significant factors.”
2. Dr Mercola related that water with a negative charge may be similarly beneficial, stating:
“Even water is influenced by the Earth’s electrical energy. Water in contact with the Earth has a structure that makes it conducive to healing. When you are grounded to the Earth, it is thought that the negatively charged electrons you are receiving may help increase the structure of the water in your cells—just as water increases in structure when a negative charge is introduced by an electrode.”
Now… perhaps you’re not aware of Dr Mercola’s history with water ionizers. Some years ago he made a blistering attack on water ionizers with no real scientific support for his claims. We in the industry were stunned. In a matter of days the reason was revealed. he had made a deal with a water filter company, Aquasana, relabelled their fairly ordinary non-ionizing filters, and sold them in a huge ‘special offer’.
But here he is suggesting exactly the opposite to his previous assertion that negatively charged – ionized – water is bad for you.
Now he is saying that ” the negatively charged electrons you are receiving may help increase the structure of the water in your cells—just as water increases in structure when a negative charge is introduced by an electrode”.
So I’m wondering if he’s thrown the baby out with the bathwater. Of course earthing is good. I love to walk barefoot on the Earth anywhere I can. It calms me and I’m sure that the reports now coming in of the results of reversing Electron Deficiency Syndrome are all true. Scientific studies so far show:
- Reduced inflammation of muscles after exercise
- Pain Reduction
- Better Adrenal function
- Improved Immunity
- Reduced renal excretion of calcium and phosphorus during a 7- to 8-hour period of sleeping grounded (which reflects a reduced risk of osteoporosis)
- Decreased blood glucose levels (reducing risk for diabetes)
- Decreased free tri-iodothyronine, and increased free thyroxin and TSH (meaning better thyroid function)
- Accelerated immune response following vaccination (as evidenced by gamma globulin concentration), which would suggest a more robust immune system.
But here’s my point.
Every glass of water from a water ionizer/filter, be it one that uses electrodes or not, is loaded with free hydrogen carrying a negative ionic charge. One glass of water has more antioxidant effect than a bowl of oranges. So let’s explore this a little more so you can see clearly where I’m going.
According to Dr. James Oschman, biophysicist and coauthor of Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?,
““It looks to me, from my study of biophysics and cell biology, like the body is designed with a semi-conductive fabric that connects everything in the body, including inside of every cell. I refer to this system as the living matrix. Those electrons that enter the bottom of your foot can move anywhere in your body. Any place where a free radical forms, there are electrons nearby that can neutralize that free radical and prevent any of those processes: mitochondrial damage, cross linking of proteins, and mutation or genetic damage. So the whole fabric is basically an antioxidant defense system that is in every part of your body.”
And as Dr Mercola says,

“Dr. Stephen Sinatra, cardiologist and Earthing expert, in discussing the zeta potential of Red Blood Cells that causes decreased blood viscosity, when exposed to an electrical field, says that within minutes of grounding, your zeta potential quickly rises, meaning your blood cells have a greater charge and actually repel each other. This action causes your blood to flow more easily and your blood pressure to drop. When your zeta potential is lower, your blood cells tend to clump together, which is unfortunately what most people’s blood looks like when they are not grounded.”
But.. Dr Mercola..
This is what I’ve been hearing for years in discussions about ionized water! I have seen and heard literally thousands of stories from water ionizer owners that mirror the effects Dr Sinatra is talking about. I’ll go further. Ionized water carries negatively charged hydrogen ions (atoms) into the body. They react with free radicals. They neutralise positive charge.
Dr Mercola says.. and I agree..
“Free radicals are primarily produced via metabolic processes, although you also get them from the foods you eat, the water you drink and the air you breathe. Your immune system is the main generator of free radicals, and it’s in operation 24 hours a day. In the process of oxidizing invading pathogens and disposing of damaged cells, your immune system generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are molecules short an electron or with an electron imbalance—they take away electrons from the cell or pathogen.”
And yet.. he endorsed one form of natural antioxidant (grounding) and rejects another as a way to alter the free radical overload in the body. He rejects a proven antioxidant water that thousands of people tell me affects many health conditions including inflammation, that has scientific reports demonstrating its effect on free radicals, and is available 24/7 to anyone with a water ionizer no matter whether they are earthed or not!
I am not in any way reducing the ‘good news’ of a natural method of reducing Electron Deficiency Syndrome. I totally agree that earthing is a great concept. But let’s acknowledge that the direct infusion of an equal and opposite electrical charge in the form of antioxidant water is most likely at least as effective and possibly a bit more convenient.
I have been drinking antioxidant ionized water for 13 years. I have introduced many thousands of people to the concept. In the last two years. I’d like to talk about two of the most important reasons I believe people give up using the program. It’s often those of us with health challenges that do give up before we even get to see the benefits.
I want to talk about the problems I have had, and have seen other people encounter in the first stages of this program. I will talk about the changes that we go through as our bodies adjust from a glucose burning body to a fat burning body. The other important thing I am going to talk about today are the “healing reactions” we encounter on our journey to good health. These healing reactions are another reason why we give up and go back to a high carbohydrate diet.
In the first few weeks to 2 months of starting the alkaline paleo program, we will encounter an uncomfortable period of change over, from a glucose burning body to a fat burning body. This period of change over is inevitable as the body changes from using one fuel as a source of energy to using another. The length of time this change will last depends on our personal genetics and our health history.
These changeover symptoms are usually just plain tiredness and sometimes there are flu like symptoms also which may last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. There are those of of us who will hardly even notice the difference but most us will have a sense of real tiredness, we will urinate a lot, have cramps and we will have foggy thinking.
One of the most important things to do to ease the symptoms in this adjustment period is to make sure we are getting plenty of Celtic sea Salt. This will make the process so much easier. The salt will help with the excess urination, tiredness and muscle cramping.
The changeover of the bodies fuels can also cause some depression. This is because the chemicals in the brain are readjusting as they are no longer receiving the opioid like reactions from the wheat and the dairy we have been eating, nor are we getting the blood sugar level highs from the high carbohydrates foods.
But don’t worry, I can guarantee these highs, and of course the inevitable lows that follow, will be replaced by a much more calm and stable mind when you have gone through the initial adjustments.
We need to make sure we can get plenty of rest in this changeover period as the body is doing a lot of work to get us well. It’s a good idea at this stage to start nurturing ourselves in ways that don’t include the old habits of eating high carb comfort foods. We can start doing really nice things for ourselves like taking a walk, reading a great book, having an Epsom salt bath, keeping a journal, meditating, watching a funny movie or just taking a nap.
Now the other reason we may give up the alkaline paleo diet is this. We all believe that when we start eating better we should start getting progressively better from our health challenges. This seems to make total sense right?
No, it’s not like this and I will tell you why.
Many of us who try the alkaline paleo program do so to heal from chronic health challenges that could have been present in the body anywhere from 6 months to many many years to even a lifetime.
When the body is chronically unwell it’s only option for our survival will mean putting some not imminently life threatening health challenges into deeper levels of our body. It leaves them there, till hopefully one day, it will be strong enough to deal with them.
As the body gets the nutrition and cleansing it needs it begins unwinding the deeper layer issues and with this unwinding we may feel ‘sick’ with different symptoms which can be confusing if we don’t understand what is happening.
I call these symptoms ‘healing reactions’ . Healing reactions occur because the body is finally able to deal with these deeper layer issues. Healing Reactions show us that we are now capable of deep healing and they are a great sign.
How can we tell whether what is happening to us is a ‘Healing Reaction’ or that we are just plain getting sicker?
First it is important to know that we must stay on the diet and not cheat to really know if these reaction are healing reactions If we cheat there will be reactions in the body to the cheat foods and these are not healing reactions. These reactions can be quite strong as your body says absolutely “no” to the cheat food and lets you know it. Cheat reactions can last for days after the cheat.
This is how to tell the difference between a ‘healing reaction’ or just plain getter sicker.
Just before we get healing reactions we will start to feel much better and will have more energy. Then in the next day or couple of days, we will find a ‘healing reaction ‘ will occur and we won’t feel good or we will even feel downright awful. Then after maybe a few day to a week we will start feeling good again. This will repeat until all our health challenges are gone.
At this point I would like to say, if you are at all worried about any reactions then it is important that you check with your doctor as it might be something that needs quick attention.
I have heard some people say that they aren’t doing well on a low carb diet and so they start to eat potato or white rice to get more carbs and then say they start to feel a lot better.
Watch out for this, as what is happening is that the healing reactions are actually being halted from the high carb intake and these people are also getting a blood sugar high.
If you do feel the need for more carbs eat some more vegetables, such as cauliflower, zucchini or eggplant as these are carbohydrates but they will not spike your blood sugar nor stop the healing reactions. Spiked blood sugar causes an ageing cascade in the body and is counter productive to healing and longevity.
I hope this helps to bring some reassurance that its ok to have healing reactions . I can honestly say I have now observed enough absolute healing in people from chronic ill health to know that these ‘healing reactions’ are a normal part of the process of total healing

Here are the 13 reasons why our bodies, if given the right nutrition, will be so much more alkaline when including meat in the diet.
1. On the Alkaline Paleo diet stress is greatly relieved. Stress is the greatest acidifier and getting the right nutrition will calm the mind enormously.
It’s been both mine and Ian’s experience that stress is no longer nearly the problem it was prior to going on this Alkaline Paleo diet. By getting all of our amino acids so necessary from high quality protein (meat, eggs or fish)and the good fats we need, we’ve created a platform for the body to have the brain function as it should. Amino acids from good proteins are essential to a healthy psych. There are studies that show that many psychiatric disorders can be reversed when amino acids are supplied adequately to the diet.
|The Alkaline Paleo protocol will help to create a really calm and clear mind, a mind that doesn’t get caught on the small stuff and with the big stuff is able to creatively find way through and beyond. A calm mind created more alkalinity.|
And a calm mind allows for deep breathing. When we are stressed we shallow breathe which means we don’t eliminate the carbon dioxide so well from our lungs. Carbon dioxide comes from carbonic acid which is acidifying and part of the way the body gets rid of excess acids. Depression which doesn’t allow good thinking has become something that is very rare for us now and only lasts for a very short time before we get to understand what it is about and then do what it takes to move quickly through it.
And stable blood sugar levels from the Alkaline Paleo diet ends the up and down mood swings that come from fluctuating blood sugars. Ian used to get really grumpy when he didn’t eat on time as his blood sugar would get low if he missed a meal. Now because his blood sugar is balanced due to Alkaline Paleo diet he can now miss a whole meal and remains a happy boy!
2. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we don’t eat grains. Grains are much more acidifying to the body than meat.
Meat is acidifing but the most acidifying food (apart from sugar) is grains. One of the things about any grains is they are not easily digested because of many factors including phytates, lectins, gluten (forms of gluten are found in all grains) and high carbohydrate levels. When foods are difficult to digest this sets up inflammation in the gut which then promotes gut dysbiosis and finally inflammation throughout the body.
|Through incomplete digestion in the intestines, grains cause inflammation. Inflammation causes stress and therefore more bodily acidification.|
One way to gauge acidity is to measure acid-induced calcium loss in the urine. A study by the Uni of Toronto examined the effect of increasing gluten consumption with the level of calcium loss in the urine. An incredible 63 percent increase in calcium loss occurred with an increase of gluten from bread. About 10,000 years ago our Paleo ancestors ate meats, vegetables and a small amount of fruit, nuts and roots. This formerly alkaline human diet pH balance shifted to the acid side with the introduction of grains, especially wheat.
3. On an Alkaline Paleo diet sugars, the most acidic foods of all, are almost eliminated and cravings for sugar just disappear!
If we do decide to eat berries we will be ingesting some acidity and sugar from these fruit, but for the most part, with the Alkaline Paleo diet, Ian and I just prefer savoury foods now. Our sweet tooth has just faded away. No more cravings. This doesn’t mean there isn’t an occasional foray into the fruit world but where we craved sugar and fruit before, it is now just a nice thing to eat a tiny bit of fruit every now and again – as it would have been with our Palaeolithic ancestors.
4. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we need only a small amount of meat, eggs or fish with every meal.
|Compared with the amount of grains, nut and legumes we need to consume to get enough nutrition without eating meat, the amount of meat, eggs or fish we need is comparably much smaller in sheer bulk. This means we are not ingesting nearly as much acidic foods.|
5. On the Alkaline Paleo diet there are other factors in meat that lessen its acidity.
In his book ‘Wheat Belly’ Dr William Davis tells us that:
“New research suggest that meats have other effects when ingested that partially negate the acid load.
“Animal protein exerts a bone-strengthening effect through stimulation of the hormone insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which triggers bone growth and mineralization.
|The net effect of proteins from meat, despite their acid-generating properties, is that of increasing bone health. Children, adolescents, and the elderly who increase their meat intake show increased bone calcium content and improved measures of bone strength.”|
6. On the Alkaline Paleo diet overall food consumption lessens, due to satiety from eating healthy fats, and less food consumption means less acidity in the body.
Eating too much is very acidifying no matter how alkaline a food is. When the stomach and digestive system is overloaded it puts tremendous stress on the body to deliver the saliva, hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile, digestive enzymes and all the other hormones and enzymes needed for digestion. We all know what it’s like to be over-full. We feel awful. The body is in an enormous amount of stress trying to deliver what is needed to digest this surplus of food and we know what stress does – it acidifies! Dairy – especially plain milk – is acidic and so is cheese.
7. On the Alkaline Paleo we eat very little dairy products. Dairy products are acid making in the body.
Dairy is very hard to give up as it has a opioid like effect in the brain which will cause cravings. Why do I mention this? Being addicted to any substance drugs or drug like food causes a stress reaction in the body and stress is acidifying.
Dairy is usually a part of a vegetarian diet as it is one of the few ways that a vegetarian gets enough quality protein, and fat soluble vitamins such a Vitamin A, K2, D3 and the vitamin B12.
If someone is vegan and doesn’t eat these foods they quickly become deficient in essential amino acids. These vitamins & amino acids will need to be supplemented in pill form in order to get these nutrients. Is this an optimal diet if you need supplements to survive?
What happens if you are vegetarian and have a food sensitivity to dairy? Unless we supplement with a large amount of eggs we will have a lot of deficiencies, we will get sick as vegetarians and vegans often do, despite their alkaline diet. I know, I was one of them. Bringing back meat into my diet allowed me to get nutrients I was badly missing.
8. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we drink leafy green vegetable juices. These are very alkalizing due to the high potassium levels – we love them.
We drink (when we are back in Australia) a green vegetable juice every day. We don’t add carrots, beetroot or fruit as they are high in sugar. Fruit juice is acidic also. We have juices of kale, celery, cabbage, cucumbers, parsley, lettuce, coriander (detoxes mercury) and some ginger.

It is thought that our ancestors’ urine pH was as high as 7.5 to 9.0 compared to the our modern range of 4.4 to 7.0. Our Paleo forebears also lived in a much cleaner world where his air was clean and rich in oxygen, with clean food and (most likely alkaline) pure water, stress would have been limited to those moments where they were hunting – or being hunted!
9. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we have stable blood sugar levels from eating good fats and no high carb foods.
Even blood sugar levels are really important as spikes in blood sugar are very acidifying and cause glycation which cause the ageing process. Diabetics are an example of the effects of high blood sugars levels as they age much faster than those with healthy blood sugar levels.
10. On the Alkaline Paleo diet drinking alkaline ionized water alone will increase alkalinity – and help to negate the effects of AGE’s (free radicals).
Unlike our Paleo ancestors” world, in today’s world we need all the help we can to stay alkaline and drinking alkaline water is an easy and great way of achieving this. Alkaline water is a rich sourse of antioxidants. Antioxidants are fantastic for negating AGE’s in the blood stream thereby increasing the ability of the body to remain youthful and healthy.
11. On the Alkaline Paleo diet Candida Albicans and other bad gut bacteria, with their excretion of very acidic waste, will no longer thrive.
12. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we eat more vegetables now than we did as vegetarians. We don’t fill up on bulky grains, pulses or nuts so there is more room for fresh vegetables.
13. On the Alkaline Paleo diet we eat very little fruits as they are high in sugar and not nutrient dense.
We don’t eat much fruit as I have stated before it is acidifying due to the large amount of sugars now found in it.

They’ve been bred for sweetness and while fruits do of course convey nutrients to our bodies the nutrient to calorie ratio of most vegetable is far greater than that of most fruits.”|
This has been so good to write and I hope I have helped to make it clear that contrary to our modern belief that eating meat = acidity that actually eating meat= great nutrition and more alkalinity. Why a Diet At All? Why Not Just a Pill or a Super food to Fix My Particular Ailment?
When I took a pharmaceutical drug, a vitamin pill, natural remedy or a super food I became aware that these remedies might give me some relief from my particular ailment temporarily…. but that any remedy, be it natural or chemical, couldn’t address the fundamental problem for why that ailment occurred in the first place.
I can’t say that the latest super food will fix our bodies up just like that because it won’t. Our bodies are an amazing and intricately connected thing and when you treat it right it will perform beautifully.
Food is a Powerful Medicine
I have taken so many pills and potions – some worked temporarily, but after a short time I would find another problem would just pop up somewhere else in my body or the original one would just return. Does this ring a bell for you?
By finally addressing the food that I ate and the water I drank, my body was able to start really repairing itself I never really understood before how food could be such a powerful healer until I found the Alkaline Paleo diet.
Since using this diet health problems that I believed were the result of ageing or a genetic inheritance have disappeared
Why the Alkaline Diet?
The Alkaline diet and water have been amazing at maintaining my own and my family’s immunity. We just don’t get the usual colds and flu every year. Alkalizing our bodies has also really helped to reduce our bodies’ tendency towards inflammation. In our world there are many, many acidifiers, which causes inflammation. Stress, high carb food, shallow breathing, pollution, toxins. Adding an alkaline buffer – be it by water and/or food allows our bodies to mediate these acids created by our modern lifestyle. This lifestyle has never been seen before in the history of man.
With our world full of pesticides, chemicals and drugs, simply consuming a daily glass of Green organic vegetable juice is the ongoing strategy for detoxifying the body. When we drink green vegetable juices we give the liver a huge helping hand to get rid of some not so good chemicals and heavy metals that we might be storing .
The blood pH is a crucial component of our ability to survive and the body does absolutely everything to keep the blood pH at a certain level. This pH level can not go outside a very small range or we die. Doctors tell us that this is not something to concern ourselves with as the body is able to keep this balance all by itself. The body can and does rebalance almost continuously but when it can’t find the raw materials it needs to rebalance – alkaline minerals, it strip mines our bones for the alkaline components it needs to bring the pH back to the right balance.
An extreme example of this is end stage cancer . Cancer patients can have a strong alkaline ammonia smell as the body goes overboard trying to right a very acidic imbalance and actually starts to break down our organs to obtain alkaline minerals.
We are a constant rebalancing mechanism.. but you can’t rebalance from imbalance unless you bring more of what is missing to the process. If we are living the acidic life, I believe we support the body’s balance process by making sure we get enough alkaline minerals.
In his book, Alkalize or Die, Dr. Theodore Baroody explains the alkaline reserve, “The great alkaline reserve is the body’s bank account. The body can call upon it any time to release alkaline elements for the neutralization of acid.”
When the body uses minerals from its alkaline reserve, it’s important to replenish that supply through the food we eat and the water we drink. Why? Because if the alkaline reserve isn’t stocked with what it needs, your body will begin to find the alkaline minerals it needs elsewhere-in places like your your bones and teeth.
To help keep your alkaline reserve well stocked it’s essential that you eat and drink foods that are alkaline. Here’s a partial list of some alkaline vegetables you can include in your everyday diet. Eat them raw in a salad if possible. If you choose to cook your vegetables try steaming them instead of boiling.
Silverbeet, Spinach, Broccoli, Kale, Coriander(great for detoxing mercury from the brain), Parsley, Cucumber, Celery.
Eating what is in season is best and of course where possible eat organic.
Why Not Just Do the Alkaline Diet Then?
The Alkaline Diet is fantastic up to a certain point and that point came for me a few years ago and with my beloved this year. You see my beloved discovered some pretty scary things about his body which had not evidenced itself up until recently. In fact my beloved thought he was incredibly healthy as everything seemed to be working fine, no outward signs at all, but then I noticed his memory was getting increasingly bad and when he broke his leg and found out he had osteoporosis, I realised he needed something more needed to be done. As for myself I started getting some not so nice menopausal symptoms along with my usual IBS symptoms which was still giving me problems.
What’s wrong with the Alkaline Diet?
The Alkaline diet exponents as you see on the net have claimed for years that all you need do is eat 80% Alkaline and 20% Acidic foods. One of the major food groups that has been and still is allowable in the Alkaline 80% side of the diet is fruit. I have now found out that fruit is not the alkalizer that we thought it was. The high sugar content of fruit actually acidifies the body. Sure it has some alkaline minerals but they are far outweighed by the sugar content. It appears that the alkaline diet exponents were looking for alkaline minerals and ignoring the acidifying ones!
Fruit was a favourite of mine and I would eat it throughout the day believing it to be a healthy snack. I often added fruit to my juices to make them taste nice, but using fruit especially as a juice meant that I was getting concentrated acidity in the form of a sugar. Our livers can’t even see it coming!
Not only that… the acidic foods I was eating included foods that just could not pack the nutrient punch that my body needed. I ate grains, nuts, pulses and lentils.. I always ate whole foods but the truth is you may not like to hear is that these foods are missing many of the essential Amino Acids that are needed for ultimate health. These foods are not nutrient dense.
Now here’s the big secret; Good Fats – lipids – acids – are the most natural thing you can eat!
The brain is 70% fat, the heart get it’s sole energy from fats.
Another thing these ‘whole’ foods are missing are good fats. We need good fats to create cholesterol, the body’s natural food source for all of our hormone cascade. Yes we do need cholesterol.
Cholesterol creates hormones in the body, so if we are deprived of cholesterol we are unable to make the hormones necessary for hormonal balance.
If I am only going to have only 20% acidic foods then they need to be the best nutrient dense foods I can get.
So if we reduce or remove fruit, what do we eat? Greens! Lots of greens!
Remember: Vegetables are great detoxifiers but they are not nutrient dense.
The Paleo Diet- A Nutrient Dense Diet. A diet where you’ll naturally eat less!
The Paleo Diet is based on what mankind has evolved to eat over the course of our evolution. Our Palaeolithic ancestors ate some fruits and vegetables – only in season – and when they could, some honey but the bulk of their food was meat, with fish and eggs in certain areas. This is a very nutrient dense diet . I’m not making this up. You’ll find an excellent link to Dr Loren Cordain’s research on this page.
Our ancestors had clean food, clean air and clean water so they had very little need for detoxifying. They had little need for vegetables and would eat them in small amounts when game was scarce.
It’s now clear to many Paleo Anthropologists that we could not possibly be sufficiently evolved enough to live healthily on the high carbohydrate food that we are giving to ourselves today. An evolution of that degree will take thousands of years. In fact our bodies are still ‘paleo’ – they still have a blueprint that survives best on what they evolved to eat; meat and fat. You may disagree but the research is clear. Never before in our history have we consumed the amount of sugar we have consumed today. Grains – especially wheat – have been around for a relatively miniscule part of mankind’s history. Our paleo gut just isn’t able to deal with these high levels of carbohydrates , so opportunistic bacteria abounds in the bowel consuming what our normal digestion can’t deal with- carbohydrates.
Why the Alkaline Paleo Diet?
The Alkaline Paleo diet is a diet using the best of the Paleo concepts and the best of the Alkaline concepts. We live in a very different world than our Paleo ancestors. Never before have we had such a sedentary life, so much more chronic stress, so many toxins and so much more acid creating food and drink. Our ancestors could just run away from danger. We can’t – and danger comes in different forms, and manifests as long term chronic supressed stress and it is highly acidifying to the body.
But we still need the highly nutrient rich foods that our ancestors naturally ate. They didn’t have a pill to take, they just ate good food and remained healthy and went on to dominate a whole world as a species!
Hence the Alkaline Paleo Diet- 80% green and coloured vegetables, alkaline water and 20% meat, eggs, fish and good fats. Good fats are incredible important to creating hormones.
All the Amino Acids are Necessary for An Easy Going Mood
I just listened to a doctor explain another reason why I am so happy and clearing minded on the Alkaline Paleo diet!
Apart from the fact that I am just healthy and getting all the nutrition my brain and body needs there’s even more benefits on being on the diet.

From what I heard from him, I am finally getting all the Amino acids including L-Cysteine from good quality protein (eggs, fish and pasture fed meats), plenty of organic greenvegetables which supplies another important ingredient, 5HTP, and I’m getting plenty of Vitamin B6 which is necessary for amino acid and neurotransmitter synthesis (Serotonin & Dopamine).
There is evidence that shows that vegetarians are more depressed than meat eaters. I can vouch for that! Not only was I not getting the amino acids I needed but the high carbs were feeding the bad bacteria in my gut making me sick in mind and body.
Alkaline Water: A Great Detoxifier and Antioxidant Booster
I’m drinking good water which is a great detoxifier and I’ve taken out coffee and alcohol to give the liver a chance to get healthy so it can do its job of detoxifying. After my last binge in Italy my liver actually hurt to touch!
Eating Gluten Has A Big Effect on Mental Health
Another important thing is I am not eating any gluten. Gluten has a huge effect on the brain, not only does it have an opioid like effect but it also increases Serotonin which I would have thought was a good thing, but it’s not. The reason being is if we make too much Serotonin then our Dopamine is not being balanced and we are back in trouble again brain balance wise. We need a balance of Serotonin (the calming neurotransmitter) and Dopomine (the exiting neurotransmitter) to have the best happiness opportunity!
Balanced Blood Sugar Levels
Of course my blood sugar levels are balanced without the up and down of a high carb diet. This means that I don’t get mean if I don’t get something to eat on time!
Not Feeding the Little Critters!
Also I am not feeding those bad bacteria whose excretions go into my blood stream through my gut wall from leaky gut. This phenomena leads to foggy thinking.
Healthy Fats Feeds the Hormonal System and the Brain
Add to this that I am getting plenty of healthy fats (coconut oil, meat fats) which are giving me plenty of good cholesterol to create a good hormonal balance. Also coconut oils medium chain fatty acids creates Ketones which is a great source of energy for the brain.
All these factors are balancing my thinking so I am able to distinguish between the important things in my life that I need to address (like my present food choices) and the things that really aren’t important at all (like whether home is a bit of a mess!).
No wonder I am just so darned happy my body and mind are finally getting the chance to function as they should! I sure hope I’m not going to get caught again like I did with my Italian experience. Cross fingers!
