This is explosive: big new mainstream study by pro-fluoride lobby concludes fluorides are lowering children’s IQ.
Published in Environmental Health Perspectives, in September 2017, titled: “Prenatal Fluoride Exposure and Cognitive Outcomes in Children at 4 and 6-12 Years of Age.”
Here’s the bottom line.
The study concluded: “…higher prenatal fluoride exposure, in the general range of exposures reported for other general population samples of pregnant women and non-pregnant adults, was associated with lower scores on tests of cognitive function in the offspring at age 4 and 6–12 yrs.”
In short, pregnant women exposed to fluorides give birth to children who later show up with lower IQ.
Here’s excerpts from an interview of Paul Connett, PhD. And just to let you know he’s not trying to sell you something, here’s a small part of his CV.
Paul Connett is Professor Emeritus in Environmental Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. For the past 30 years, he has put his scientific knowledge to work by helping (pro bono) communities around the world understand the science of controversial issues like…fluoridation. Dr. Connett is the author of] The Case Against Fluoride (Chelsea Green, 2011, co-authored with James Beck & H. Spedding Micklem). Paul has researched the literature on fluoride’s toxicity and the fluoridation debate for 17 years. He helped to found the Fluoride Action Network (FAN).”
He has quite a history as health warrior. In June 2001, Paul (together with Dr. William Hirzy) was invited to debate proponents of fluoridation at the annual conference of the Association for Science in the Public Interest (ASIPI) in Richmond, Virginia. The proponents refused to participate in this debate.”
“In November 2001, Paul (together with Dr. Phyllis Mullenix) were invited by the American College of Toxicology to debate proponents, but they [the proponents of fluoridation] again refused. On both the above occasions Dr. Connett gave a presentation of the arguments against fluoridation in lieu of the debate.”
“In March 2003, Paul was invited by the US EPA to present the opponent’s position in a one-on-one debate on fluoridation to be held at their annual Science Forum in Washington, DC, on May 6, 2003. Despite a six week effort by the organizers of this event, no scientist or official holding a pro-fluoridation position was willing to participate in this debate. In lieu of this debate, Paul provided a power-point presentation to a packed audience, which included 8 congressional aides, representatives from major environmental organizations, EPA officials and the media. The title of Paul’s talk—‘Fluoridation: The Undefendable Practice.’”
Excerpts from a recent interview with Dr. Connett:
Q: There is a new study on the effect of fluorides on IQ.
Several questions: Do you believe the study is well done? Does it deserve our attention? What conclusions does it draw?
A: This is a very important study. You can see my reaction to it in the videotaped interview at this link on the day it was published: Fluoride Exposure in Utero Linked to Lower IQ in Kids.
Taken at face value it should have been a good study. It was financed largely by the NIEHS [National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences] (part of NIH [US National Institutes of Health], which of course is pro-fluoridation). It was conducted largely by specialists in the field who have done similar studies on other neurotoxicants. None of them to my knowledge had taken a public position against water fluoridation (indeed one was known to be pro-fluoridation) so the notion of bias here was small…
Q: What is the reaction of public health agencies to the new study?
A: Pro-fluoridation agencies have done what they always do – attack any study that finds harm. They are all more interested in protecting the archaic practice of water fluoridation than to protect the health of our children. Extraordinary that any civil servant should think that children’s teeth are more important than their brains! The people at the top are desperately trying to protect a policy they have waxed lyrical about for 70 years. The people in the middle are taught to promote “policy” not question it and the people at the bottom simply believe what they were taught at dental or medical school and reinforced by their professional bodies. Others seem very concerned that if they lose fluoridation it will affect the public’s trust in other public health practices – a clear example would be vaccination, a multi-billion dollar interest supported by the CDC (a big champion of fluoridation).
Q: How have major media reacted to the new study?
A: Apart from CNN and CTV in Canada and Newsweek there has been little coverage by the mainstream media. It was not covered by the NY Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal or any other major newspaper. That again is extraordinary for a study of this significance. Sadly, this is also typical of these outlets when it comes to the detailed science on this issue. They simply don’t want to know.
Q: I’ve been covering the fluoride situation [fluoridating water supplies] in New Zealand (note to reader: article archive here). Last I heard, there was a move to take decision-making away from local governments and put it in the hands of federal health councils, who would determine whether to fluoridate water supplies. Can you give me an update?
A: Yes this is a dreadful development. Thus, in addition to the health issues we now have democracy threatened in NZ. Yesterday [11/16/17], the new government re-introduced the bill [handing over fluoridating decisions to federal authorities] for a second reading. One can only hope that the coalition partners will not be bullied into going along with this. A NZ first member is strongly against this bill. I would hope that the Green Party will not be railroaded on this either. But they have been very weak so far.
Q: I’ve been told that many years ago, you were in favor of water fluoridation. What was the turning point? What made you change your mind?
A: To be more accurate I didn’t want to get involved. I was so busy teaching chemistry and working on waste [disposal issues] (which has taken me to 49 states and 65 other countries) that I didn’t have time for a third issue. And I certainly didn’t want a third issue in which if I got involved would get me labelled as “loony tunes.” Over the years I was approached by three different people to get involved (once in Spokane, WA; another from Ohio and a third from Ontario). I resisted them all. Then someone I couldn’t resist twisted my arm…– my wife – in 1996. When I read the literature she had amassed I was both shocked with what I learned and embarrassed that I had not got involved before. I have spent the last 21 years trying to make amends.
Here are further comments on the new fluoride study, from the group Dr. Connett helped start, the Fluoride Action Network:
“The loss of IQ [reported in the study] is very large. The child of a mother who was drinking 1 ppm F [fluoride] water would be predicted to have 5 to 6 IQ points lower than if the mother had drunk water with close to zero F in it.”
“The range of F exposures in this study is likely to be very close to the range in a fluoridated area of the United States. The doses in this study are directly applicable to areas with artificial fluoridation.”
“This study was very carefully done, by a group of researchers who have produced over 50 papers on the cognitive health of children in relationship to environmental exposures. This was funded by the NIH and was a multi-million dollar study. This was the group’s first study of fluoride, their other studies mostly dealing with lead, mercury, and other environmental neurotoxicants.”
“The study authors are cautious in their conclusions, as is common for scientists. But the implications of this study are enormous. A single study will never prove that F lowers IQ at doses found in fluoridated areas, but this is more than a red flag. It is a cannon shot across the bow of the 80 year old practice of artificial fluoridation.”
As I’ve been writing and saying for many years, one of the major forms of fake news is not mentioning the real news at all. Omitting it. Or downplaying it. This is the case here, with the new fluoride study.
Mothers giving birth to children with lower IQs? Not a concern. Not a problem. This is the stance of major media, who shout about “other people’s fake news.”
We spent a great deal of time sourcing the best method of fluoride reduction. As you may already know, we also invested heavily in the only life-of-filter tests for the UltraStream. We decided on this because we observed that NO-ONE in the industry had done it, and yet it seemed obvious to us that everyone would want to know the filtration effectiveness not just as a new filter, but as a year-old filter. We also asked the University lab to increase the Flouride in the sample. The test water had almost twice the fluoride as that in normal drinking water. That’s why we can say our fluoride reduction is so good.
A good customer of ours rang after looking at a video from another water alkalizer company regarding fluoride.
I thought the easiest way to help her was to look at the video and comment.
In it I discuss whether activated alumina, our fluoride reduction media of choice, works as we say it does.
Here are a few links that support our theory!

Erin Elizabeth of Health Nut News shared this post about the dangers of fluoride – NEW information yesterday.
New research shows there is a strong correlation between water fluoridation and the prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, in the United States.
It’s the first time that scientists have systematically studied the relationship between the behavioral disorder and fluoridation, the process wherein fluoride is added to water to prevent cavities.
The study, published in the journal Environmental Health, found that states with a higher portion of artificially fluoridated water had a higher prevalence of ADHD. This relationship held up across six different years examined. The authors, psychologistsChristine Till and Ashley Malin at Toronto’s York University, looked at the prevalence of fluoridation by state in 1992 and rates of ADHD diagnoses in subsequent years.
Yes, you read that right. This relationship held up across six (6!) different years examined for ADHD. That’s pretty sobering. Yet just the other day I had a “skeptic” (I plan to reclaim that name as we are the real skeptics who are skeptical of things like fluoride) tell me that fluoridated water has been proven safe “beyond a shadow of a doubt” It was on a pretty popular thread I had with thousands of reads. What is more sad is that dozens of “skeptics” liked his post. People blindly drinking the kool- aid (or in this case fluoridated water) telling themselves “science” has proven it so (Actually scientists are telling us now that it can make us fat, depressed and give us ADD) Scientists and doctors used to tell us smoking was safe too. Let’s give them another 50 years and see what the majority says about fluoridated water. Methinks they’ll shun it like cigarettes.
We also didn’t know that most Europeans have rejected the use of fluoridated water (interesting how Americans are deemed crazy for making such a suggestion) but in Europe? It’s the norm (that’s not counting the UK)
From the second article about the study which shows weight gain and depression as a direct result of fluoridated water:
Fluoride added to local water supplies in England may cause depression and weight gain, a new study suggests. Scientists warn local authorities should cease adding the mineral to drinking water in the interest of public health.
The research, conducted by a team of scientists at the University of Kent, indicates that particularly high numbers of underactive thyroid glands occur in areas with high levels of fluoridation.
Having analyzed 98 percent of GP practices in England, researchers found underactive thyroids are 30 percent more likely in areas where higher levels of water fluoridation occur.
They concluded as many as 15,000 Britons suffer unnecessarily from thyroid problems as a result – a health complication commonly linked to depression, fatigue and weight gain.
If it does it in England it’s going to do the same thing here in the US. I’m not sure why this isn’t on the front of every mainstream news channel but am glad Newsweek and a few others are covering these ground breaking published studies..
People ask me frequently what to do about getting the fluoride out of their water. Reverse Osmosis systems help, but they don’t get out all the fluoride. Others prefer to find a source of clean spring water that wouldn’t have added fluoride like most of America’s toxic water supply. If the fluoride weren’t bad enough we also have chlorine and disinfection byproducts which you don’t want to bathe in (or let your children bathe in) let alone drink it. There are even campaigns about “Getting the F out of water” which have involved celebrities from Erin Brokovich to Ed Begley Junior’s new campaign. And while celebrities being involved prove nothing, I think the published studies by Universities speak for themselves.
One more quote from the study just out about fluoridated water causing weight gain and depression:
As part of their research, scientists at the University of Kent compared the medical records of 7,935 GP practices.
The scientists found patients had considerably higher rates of underactive thyroid in practices situated in areas where water fluoridation levels were 0.3 mg/l or higher.
Professor Stephen Peckham, of the University of Kent, said his team’s findings are worrying for people exposed to water fluoridation.
Underactive thyroid is a particularly nasty condition, according to Peckham, which can spark a host of other health issues.
Following the release of their report, scientists based at the University of Kent said local authorities must reconsider the practice of mass water-fluoridation.
Call your city and ask if your water is fluoridated. Chances are it is. Ask what the levels are (any level is too high in my personal opinion) Spread the word to friends and family and get a whole house filter or at least a shower filter for you and your family. These won’t remove fluoride, but you can add an Alkaway UltraStream and really make your water alive again AND fluoride free.
Any contaminant in water is accompanied by a certain degree of justifiable indignation. Especially fluoride.
Rightly so, in the case of fluoride.
But with all the indignation, we see that there are some people who have ideas about how to manage a contaminant that are.. how can I say this? WRONG.
Now, Byron, I know very little about you, except what this lady said you said to her.
She said we approached you to sell our products but you would never recommend anything containing AA. – activated alumina, which we use to reduce fluoride. She was quite scared, and that’s why she called. Here’s what I told her. It’s the same thing we tell anyone who asks.
But.. here’s what I also told her.
There are grades of activated alumina. Chinese water filters, for instance, often use very cheap AA. The problem with this is that it contains a large degree of AA dust along with the large grains. This dust will pass through other layers of a filter and yes, can end up in your end water.
We experienced this problem when we sold a Chinese model. It’s one of the reasons we decided to spend the money and have our UltraStream made in the uSA.
We specified NSF approved AA for the UltraStream. Our water filtration specialist at the factory was able to give us a grade of AA that (although much more expensive) had no ‘dust’ and therefore would not pass through the filter.
We remained with AA because there are only 4 medias possible for fluoride removal:
b) Zeolite (less effective and shorter lifespan)
c) Bone ash. From cows. No better in performance than AA but….
d) Ion Exchange Media. This collects the fluoride until at some point unknown tot he user, it ‘fills up;. At that point, it dumps all the fluoride back into the outflow. Not acceptable.
5. The design of a filter is all important. AA is the very first media inlet water penetrates. After that we have KDF, a powerful heavy metal reduction media, catalytic carbon, up to 8 times better than standard carbon, tourmaline, H2 media, quartz crystals and more carbon to finish. IF there was any AA dust, it would have to negotiate all of these layers plus the 1 micron filter pads between each media layer!
6. We know that many things said by water filter sellers are not true. We don’t expect people to believe us and have made the big leap – putting our money where our mouth is – to the most extensive testing of any water filter I am aware of. This includes:
a) Australian university testing of a witches’ brew of contaminants to the expected life of the filter. Report here.
b) EU Safety testing. The EU community have the most stringent safety regulations in the world, and actually helped us in the final placement of the AA in the filter, doing two tests to ensure no aluminium came through. Report here.
c) AquaSciences USA tests of molecular hydrogen output by the UltraStream. Report here.
So.. Byron, I understand you sell reverse osmosis water filters, and you recommend that your customers add an alkalizing filter to them. I have no problem with this approach except for a couple of points.
- You are removing everything from the water using your RO system then you are remineralising it back to somewhere close to its original pH level. To do this you need a far more complex unit than the UltraStream which is far, far harder to maintain.
- Alkalizing of water is so… yesterday. Yes, alkaline water is definitely healthier than pure RO water, but the work we’ve done over the last two years with the help of the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation’s Tyler LeBaron, has taken us to a far greater understanding of why our UltraStream water has such a good effect on people. It’s the infused molecular hydrogen, and an add-on remineralising filter simply won’t do it.
Byron, I honour your knowledge of RO and understand where you are coming from. RO is certainly still the most complete purification system, even with all of its operational and installation difficulties. I just disagree with your belief that all AA is bad.
Kale is simply one on the healthiest food choices you can put on your table.
It’s a member of the cabbage family, power packed with vitamins A, K, C, with serious amounts of B vitamins as well as trace minerals. And… it’s low in carbs and calories.
However… there’s another really important attribute of Kale.
Along with Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Bok Choy Pak Choy and cauliflower, kale is a cruciferous vegetable, meaning the flowers take the form of a cross. It also means that like other cruciferous vegetables, kale is rich in a chemical called sulforaphane, and this may be one of kale’s most important health attributes.
Sulforaphane is a sulphur-rich chemical that activates a gene pathway in animals as well as humans called Nrf2. When Nrf2 is ‘turned on’ by consuming sulforaphane rich foods, several important health-promoting mechanisms fire up. These include a reduction in inflammation, enhanced antioxidant protection, and powerful amplification of our ability to detoxify potential damaging chemicals.
Kale and all the other cruciferous vegetables are smart choices well beyond their simple nutritional content – they actually change the expression of our DNA for the better.
And.. now we also know that alkaline superfoods like Kale remove fluoride!
Hey, I know we sell the world’s best water filter.
And a big reason we deliver so many is its good fluoride performance. It is the ONLY water filter we have seen that has actually been tested for fluoride reduction over its expected lifespan. We used Griffith University’s NATA accredited laboratory, at great expense) because we wanted an independent point of reference for our customers who, we know DO care abot what goes into their bodies.
The lab tests show around 80% net reduction. We have nothing to compare this to because we have never seen any other comparable tests.
We HAVE seen some products blithely claimed UP TO 98%. Sadly, consumer groups have never have the time or resources to ‘out’ people who make claims like this.
So this news is going to be big news.. and a real validation of what we’ve been talking about for 16 years.
I was just sent some REALLY interesting scientific studies that say that alkaline urine will remove much more fluoride from the body than acid urine. Wow.
Now.. if it’s not a ‘Wow’ for you, let me explain. The team here have been following our own version of the alkaline diet for well over a decade. i attribute my thriving good (69 next month) health to our diet which ALWAYS has good amounts of dark leafy greens – the alkaline ‘manna from Heaven! We’ve also been drinking alkaline water for all of that time from our own water alkalizers. So yes, my pee is alkaline! Or at least it was last time I checked.
The studies are clear. If your pee is alkaline, the fluoride that has got into you through either water, fluoride soaked foods, toothpaste… can be removed by an alkaline diet which in turn changes the pH of your pee.
if you aren’t on an alkaline diet and don’t know much about it, I’m making you a special offer in this blog. Our highly successful online New Alkaline Diet and Defence Program is normally a paid product. Today you can sign on for free.
If you don’t understand alkaline water, you’re going to find a load of relevancy here on our website. We are THE alkaline water experts, the inventors of the best natural water filter, alkalizer and hydrogen activator in the world.

Heres an example of the effect of urinary PH on amphetamine excretion. In this case making the urine very acidic can treat an overdose (notice that the excretion rates have a similar difference with fluoride.
Here is one on adrenaline, although I suspect changes in the blood maybe even more interesting. It’s a small study..even so the effects are so pronounced that it reaches statistical significance.
If you are wondering about fluoride, you’re not alone.
Now a new film is about to be released.
We’ve recently posted a new page on fluoride solutions here.
Please share this with your friends.
Ian: I’m studying a paper right now on the link between pre-eclampsia and fluoride. Coincidentally or not, this came across my desk at the same time.
Advocates of fluoride say its use in municipal water systems poses no adverse health concerns, however results from investigations clearly state the opposite.
There has been considerable research done on fluoride regarding cancer, birth defects, and risks to the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems, however, very little has been done on its neurological effects. There are now serious facts and health risks regarding fluoridation which can no longer be ignored and the practice itself is being questioned by most of the world.
1. Fluoride Is A Carcinogen
Fluoride was found to be an equivocal carcinogen by the National Cancer Institute Toxicological Program. Further studies by the New Jersey Department of Health have now confirmed a 6.9 fold increase in bone cancer in young males. Earlier studies had found a 5% increase in all types of cancers in fluoridated communities. “In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer death, and causes it faster than any other chemical,” stated Dr. Dean Burk PhD who spent over three decades with the national cancer institute. Researchers suspect a connection to cancer because half of ingested fluoride is deposited in bones, and fluoride stimulates growth in the end of bones, where osteosarcoma occurs.
2. Most Developed Countries Do Not Fluoridate Their Water
Most developed nations do not fluoridate their water. In western Europe, for example, only 3%of the population consumes fluoridated water. Only 11 countries in the world have more than 50% of their population drinking fluoridated water: Australia (80%), Brunei (95%); Chile (70%), Guyana (62%), Hong Kong (100%), the Irish Republic (73%), Israel (70%), Malaysia (75%), New Zealand (62%), Singapore (100%), and the United States (64%). In total, 377,655,000 million people worldwide drink artificially fluoridated water. This represents 5% of the world’s population.
3. Fluoride Increases Hip Fractures
Drinking fluoridated water will double the number of hip fractures for both older men and women.[4, 5] Extremely low levels of water fluoridation 0.1 ppm still produced statistically significant increased hip fractures. (Bordeaux Study JAMA 1994)
4. Fluoridated Countries Do Not Have Less Tooth Decay Than Non-Fluoridated Countries
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no discernible difference in tooth decay between developed countries that fluoridate their water and those that do not. The decline in tooth decay the US has experienced over the last 60 years, which is often attributed to fluoridated water, has likewise occurred in all developed countries (most of which do notfluoridate their water). What the CDC always fails to mention is that tooth decay rates have “precipitously declined” in all western countries, irrespective of whether the country ever fluoridated its water. Indeed, most western countries do not fluoridate their water and yet their tooth decay rates have declined at the same rate as the U.S. and other fluoridated countries. No correlation was found between the level of fluoride in water and dental caries.[7, 8, 9, 10, 11] There also appears to be a genetically related increase in tooth decay for Hispanics, Indians, Native Americans and Asians. Decay is largely related to the educational and economic level of the parents. “Fluoridation is no longer effective,” contends Hardy Limeback, head of the preventive dentistry program at the University of Toronto, who says adding the chemical to water is “more harmful than beneficial.”
5. Fluoridated Water Affects IQ and Neurobehavioral Development in Children
Although fluoride has been proven to cause neurotoxicity in animal models, very little published research has elaborated on acute fluoride poisoning and neurotoxicity in adults and children. A report in a peer-reviewed open access journal published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to investigate the effects of increased fluoride exposure and delayed neurobehavioral development. A study published in Neurologia showed “the prolonged ingestion of fluoride may cause significant damage to health and particularly to the nervous system.” That was the conclusion by a review of studies by researchers Valdez-Jimenez, et al. Researchers Anna L. Choi, Guifan Sun, Ying Zhang and Philippe Grandjean researched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Water Resources Abstracts, and TOXNET databases through 2011 for eligible studies. The standardized weighted mean difference in IQ score between exposed and reference populations showed that populations in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low fluoride areas.
6. Fluoride Increases Infertility
Infertility in women was found to increase with water fluoridation. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists reported a close correlation between decreasing total fertility rates in women between ages of 10 and 49, and increasing fluoride levels. They also reported that a review of all of the animal studies done to date shows that fluoride adversely affects fertility in most animal species.
7. Fluoridation is Not a “Natural” Process and Fluoride is NOT A NUTRIENT
Fluoride is naturally occurring in some areas, leading to high levels in certain water supplies “naturally.” Fluoridation advocates often use this to support its safety, however naturally occurring substances are not automatically safe (think of arsenic, for instance). Further, the fluoride added to most water supplies is not the naturally occurring variety but rather fluorosilicic acid, which is captured in air pollution control devices of the phosphate fertilizer industry. As FAN reported: This captured fluoride acid is the most contaminated chemical added to public water supplies, and may impose additional risks to those presented by natural fluorides. These risks include a possible cancer hazard from the acid’s elevated arsenic content, and a possible neurotoxic hazard from the acid’s ability–under some conditions–to increase the erosion of lead from old pipes. The term “fluoride supplement” is a misnomer as it implies that the product is a dietary supplement, like calcium and other nutrients. Fluoride, however, is not a nutrient. A nutrient is something the body has a physiological demand for–they’re not optional; we need them. The term “fluoride supplement” is also a misnomer because most dietary supplements can be purchased over the counter (i.e., without a prescription). Fluoride supplements, however, cannot be purchased over the counter; they are only available by prescription from either a licensed dentist or doctor.
8. Fluoride Increases Fluorosis
Fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel caused by too much fluoride intake during the first 8 years of life. Opaque white spots and brown ugly teeth are caused by fluoride. Fluorosis currently affects one out of five or more children in this nation although it is rarely seen in California. California is the least fluoridated state with less than 16% of the population drinking artificially fluoridated water. Common causes of fluorosis include: fluoridated drinking water (particularly during infancy), ingestion of fluoride toothpaste, use of fluoride tablets, and consumption of processed foods made with fluoridated water.
9. Fluoride Calcifies The Pineal Gland
A British researcher found that the cells in the pineal gland (a gland that contains calcified deposits that accumulate fluoride) were just as susceptible to fluoride-induced toxicity as the tooth-forming cells. Unlike the teeth, however, the pineal gland cannot be seen by the naked eye. As noted by the researcher, “The safety of the use of fluorides ultimately rests on the assumption that the developing enamel organ is most sensitive to the toxic effects of fluoride. The results from this study suggest that-the pinealocytes may be as susceptible to fluoride as the developing enamel organ.” The pineal controls your inner clock, provides good sleep, works with your adrenal glands to handle stress, keeps the thymus gland fed and cared for, and communicates 24/7 with the rest of the endocrine system about how things are going.
10. Fluoride Is NOT APPROVED By The FDA
As the FDA has long recognized, fluoride is not necessary to human health or development. When used to prevent disease, therefore, the FDA considers fluoride to be a drug. FDA has never approved a fluoride supplement as safe and effective. FDA has rejected two fluoride supplements (Enziflur & prenatal fluoride) FDA gave false information to Congress in 2000 by stating FDA “never rejected” a fluoride supplement.
11. Fluoride Is Highly Toxic, Yet It is The Drug Added To Public Water
Fluoride is added to drinking water to prevent a disease (tooth decay), and as such becomes a medicine by FDA definition. While proponents claim this is no different than adding vitamin D to milk, fluoride is not an essential nutrient. Many European nations have rejected fluoride for the very reason that delivering medication via the water supply would be inappropriate. Water fluoridation is a form of mass medication that denies you the right to informed consent. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology has classified Fluoride as an unapproved dental medicament due to its high toxicity.
12. Most people are overexposed to fluoride due to the pesticide cryolite found in consumption of grape products, particularly white grapes, grown in the U.S.
Many juice drinks that are not labeled as “grape juice” use grape juice as a filler ingredient. The use of cryolite thus contaminates many juices with fluoride. Cryolite is also allowed to be added to the following products (although it is unclear how many producers actually do so, and what the resulting fluoride levels are): Apricot, Broccoli, Brussels Sprout, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Citrus fruit, Collards, Eggplant, Kale, Kiwifruit, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Melon, Nectarine, Peach, Pepper, Plum, Pumpkin, Squash (summer & winter), Tomato, and a number of Berries (Blackberry, Blueberry (huckleberry) Boysenberry, Cranberry, Dewberry, Loganberry, Raspberry, Strawberry, Youngberry). The key way to avoid exposure to fluoride from cryolite is to avoid buying non-organic grape products, particularly beverages made out of white grapes.
13. USDA Organic Has Allowed Fluoride To Contaminate The Organic Label
Fluoride is a persistent and non-degradable poison that accumulates in soil, plants, wildlife, and humans. Many organic farmers may be unaware that this highly toxic substance has been allowed for use in the National Organic Standards (NOS) program, because its presence is hidden. However, it is allowed as Sodium Fluoride tucked away in the US EPA List 4 Inerts (“Inerts which have sufficient data to substantiate they can be used safely in pesticide products, according to EPA.”), which are allowed for use in the NOS. It is also allowed in Bone Meal (which can contain 1000 ppm – or more- fluoride), also included in US EPA List 4 Inerts (“Inerts generally regarded as safe, i.e., corn cobs and cookie crumbs,” according to EPA).
14. Fluoride Is Linked To The Leading Cause of Death
Depending on the country, cardiovascular disease is typically either the number one or two cause of death. A study published in Nuclear Medicine Communications Journal has concluded that increased uptake of fluoride in arteries may be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. 15. Most Teas At Grocery Retailers Contain Toxic Levels of Fluoride Drinking cheaper tea blends found at major grocery retailers can increase the level of people’s fluoride intake to toxic levels and put them at increased risk of skeletal and dental illnesses, a University of Derby found. The study is published in journal Food Research International.

After years of sorting through and responding to 19,000 public comments, the US government announced on Monday that it will lower the recommended amount of fluoride added to drinking water. This is the first time this will have happened in more than 50 years and will benefit the 75% of Americans that currently get fluoridated water.
Producer and director, Anna Bragga, says,
“Toxic Tap Water goes to the heart of Bedford’s battle against water fluoridation, bringing vivid sounds and imagery of the campaign into private living rooms for the first time. Although a low budget film, Toxic Tap Water packs a punch due to the emotive nature of the subject and the passion and commitment of campaigners.” Co-ordinator and spokesperson for Fluordie Free Bedford, Cynthia Bagchi, says, “I hope the film will help activists and awaken those who are asleep, unaware of the tsunami approaching – the push for water fluoridation.”
Meanwhile locally, our sister shires of Ballina and Lismore are about to have the switch thrown for flouridated water. We’ve had a steady stream of people coming into AlkaWay offices asking how to get rid of it.
The element fluorine may be essential in the human body for cellular health in minute amounts. But it creates a major health problem when the minimal daily dose of fluorine is exceeded. Depending on the degree of overdose and its duration, excessive fluorine causes fluorosis, with toxic effects on health.
We are seeing evidence of infertility, bone tissue loss and thyroid gland malfunctions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) made the rule: fluoride in drinking water is permissible up until 1.5 parts per million (ppm) per liter. Above this can cause fluoride poisoning. The WHO’s report also reveals that Turkey is one of 25 countries in the world, along with China, India and Iran, that has endemic fluorosis. Some reports found that various villages in central Turkey have fluoride in their drinking water up to 4.28 ppm, almost three times the permissible rate.
Ümit Demirel, a researcher and a practicing dentist at Bakırköy Hospital in İstanbul, studied incidence of fluorosis in villages near the cities of Ağrı, Denizli, Manisa and Van.
“In Turkey, there is no comprehensive research that identifies the risk areas for fluorosis. We do not know enough which areas have high levels of fluoride in the drinking water or to what extent humans and animals are influenced by it,” Demirel added.
Demirel says fluoride can enter public water systems from natural sources, including runoff water from the weathering of fluoride-containing rocks and soils and leaching from the soil into the groundwater. Fluoride pollution from various industrial discharges and emissions can also contaminate water sources.
But fluorosis has been brushed off by public officials because of the misconception that there are more serious health issues in Turkey that need to be prioritized other than high levels of fluoride.
Demirel expressed that government efforts to eradicate this disease have been chronically delayed. “I was invited to a meeting on Dec. 17 with the head of the Ministry of Health’s Institute of Public Health, to discuss projects. But he was removed from his position and I have not received any calls from the new one [manager],” Demirel said.
Demirel’s research highlights a case of fluorosis from the border district of Çaldıran in the eastern highlands.
Meanwhile back here in Australia protesters gather daily in Lismore, NSW to protest against their locqal council’s hard-opposed decision to take the $$ from the government that is given to councils who say ‘yes’ to fluoride.
And of course, we ARE doing rather well supplying fluoride reducing Ultrastreams to the same locals. We admit it.
But.. we are as opposed to chemicals in our water supply as anyone – perhaps more, because we see so much evidence pass across our desks on a daily basis.
Fluoride now linked to ADHD
A new study published in the Environmental Health Journal has linked exposure to fluoridated water with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children and adolescents. The study looked at the prevalence of fluoridation by US state in 1992 and rates of ADHD diagnoses in subsequent years. It concluded that, “parents reported higher rates of medically-diagnosed ADHD in their children in states in which a greater proportion of people receive fluoridated water from public water supplies.” It also states“the relationship between fluoride exposure and ADHD warrants future study.”
This relationship remained statistically significant for the six different years examined. Although researchers have identified some limitations of the study, independent researchers, such as former risk assessment scientist from the Environmental Protection Agency, William Hirzy, concur that, “The numbers of extra cases associated with a one percent increase in the 1992 artificial fluoridation [figures] are huge. In short, it clearly shows that as artificial water fluoridation increases, so does the incidence of ADHD.”

Fluoride may cause depression and weight gain
Scientists from the University of Kent warn that fluoride in drinking water could be causing depression and weight gain, and suggest that councils stop adding it to prevent tooth decay.
The new research shows nearly double the number of cases of underactive thyroid in fluoridated areas compared to the number found in unfluoridated areas. Lead author Professor Stephen Peckham believes “it is concerning for people living in those areas” as it is “a particularly nasty thing to have and it can lead to other long term health problems.”
Dr Sandra White, Director of Dental Public Health at Public Health England, maintains that fluoridation is safe and effective and has accused the study of being skewed by population bias.
- If you’re using a fluoridated toothpaste, consider switching to a non-fluoridated alternative (which you can find at most health food stores). Young children, who don’t have well developed swallowing-reflexes, often swallow a lot of toothpaste when brushing, which can cause disfiguring dental fluorosis and contribute greatly to total systemic intake. Also, even when the toothpaste is not swallowed, the fluoride may cross the gum membrane and enter the bloodstream.
- If your child is using infant formula, it is imperative to avoid making the formula with fluoridated tap water. Infant formula reconstituted with fluoridated water delivers a very high dose of fluoride to a young baby. For instance, infant formula produced with fluoridated water contains 100 to 200 times more fluoride (1,000 ppb) than is found naturally in breast milk (5-10 ppb). In fact, while breast-fed infants receive the LOWEST body burden (mg/kg/day) in the population, they receive the HIGHEST body burden if they receive fluoridated formula.
- Minimize consumption of processed beverages (e.g. soda and reconstituted juice). Soda and juice made from concentrate are often manufactured with fluoridated tap water, and hence, have fluoride levels similar to fluoridated water.
- If you regularly drink non-organic wine or grape juice consider buying only organic varieties. Many commercially-grown grapes in the US are sprayed with a fluoride pesticide called Cryolite. The residues of this pesticide can result in high levels of fluoride in wine or grape juice. In the case of wine, if you don’t want to spend the extra money buying organic, consider purchasing a European brand instead of a Californian brand, as Europe uses much less cryolite on its vineyards.
- Be careful of drinking too much green or black tea. Tea almost always has elevated levels of fluoride and can contribute a substantial amount to one’s total fluoride intake.
- Minimize consumption of mechanically-deboned chicken. Mechanically deboned chicken (e.g. “Chicken McNuggets”) has been found to contain elevated levels of fluoride due to the incorporation of ground bone particles (which are high in fluoride) into the meat.
- If you live in a country which allows fluoridated salt to be sold, make sure that the salt you buy is unfluoridated. Consumption of fluoridated salt can greatly increase a person’s fluoride exposure.
- Check to see if any prescription medicines you are taking contain fluorine. If so, ask your doctor if there are any appropriate alternatives – as some fluorine-containing pharmaceuticals (e.g. Cipro) can metabolize into fluoride ion within the body, thereby increasing the body’s exposure to fluoride.
- If you are going to have surgery, ask your doctors if they can use a non-fluorinated anesthetic. Fluorinated anesthetics such as Enflurane, Isoflurane and Sevoflurane will produce high peak levels of fluoride in blood for up to 24 hours.
- Avoid the use of teflon-coated pans. Teflon-coated pans may increase the fluoride content of food.
- Install an AlkaWay UltraSteam and get fluoride reduction in every glass.
A new pilot study of Chinese children concludes that the study…
“…supports the notion that fluoride in drinking water may produce developmental neurotoxicity, and that the dose-dependence underlying this relationship needs to be characterized in detail.”
51 children were used in the study and the researchers used the fluoride concentration in morning urine after an exposure-free night; fluoride in well-water source; plus dental fluorosis status as indices of past fluoride exposure.
They then used age-appropriate, relatively culture-independent cognitive tests. The children’s lifetime exposures to fluoride from drinking water covered the full range allowed in the US, and the results showed that even those with the mildest forms of fluorosis displayed lower performance on some neuropsychological tests. This observation runs contrary to popular wisdom that the enamel effects represent a cosmetic problem only and not a sign of toxicity.
I should add that there’s another problem facing people making choices to invest in a fluoride removing water filter. There are now water jugs being sold with UP TO 99% of fluoride removed on the box. Have a think about it. UP TO?
We spent a lot of money with a University test lab report to determine the amount fo fluoride removed over the expected life of the filter. That means as long as you use it. If this ISN’T on the box, and in its place one of these ‘UP TO’ claims, beware. It’s like those clothes shops that entice you in for a sale offering UP TO 50% off.
And.. there’s also a bit of a fear campaign about the methods of fluoride reduction. There are basically four methods: Reverse Osmosis, bone char, Zeolite and activated alumina. Some suppliers are creating a fear campaign over the last one, AA, incorrectly claiming it is aluminium. In the UltraStream we use an NSF approved AA that is guaranteed not to add any aluminium. Not only that, the AA layer comes before the patented KDF layer which neutralises any heavy metal that may be in the water. We’re so sure of it that we submitted it for safety tests in the rigid EU where it passed with flying colours.
We are slowly awakening to the fact that fluoride, a by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry, wreaks havoc on the brain and body. Despite peer-reviewed scientific evidence against it, fluoride is still added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies.
It’s in processed beverages, food, tea, and even bottled water. Yup, many popular brands of bottled water have a known neurotoxin added to them.
It’s no wonder that dental fluorosis has skyrocketed in the U.S. over the past 60 years.
It’s the side effect of fluoride ingestion, typically affecting children. And it’s awful. Click HERE to see what it looks like. Not a pretty sight.
The peer-reviewed evidence against fluoride includes a recent publication in the world renowned, weekly peer-reviewed Medical Journal, the Lancet. This report classifies fluoride as a neuro toxin and concludes that it notably decreases the IQ of children.
Of course many people know this disturbing fact and avoid drinking from the tap. But what if I told you that the very water you’re spending a pretty penny on to avoid fluoridation, is also fluoridated. You might be surprised which brands contain fluoride, but when you see who owns them it will all make sense.

Fluoride is put in your drinking water ‘for your teeth’ without your consent, but did you know that it could also be calcifying your arteries?
A Guest article from Sayer Ji
A few years ago, we reported on a study evaluating a new diagnostic technology that inadvertently revealed a link between fluoride exposure and coronary artery disease.
Our report stirred up quite a lot of controversy and criticism, even leading one of the most respected figures in alternative medicine (deservedly so) – Dr. Russell Blaylock — to call us out on Infowars for our allegedly sophomoric interpretation of the following article: “Association of vascular fluoride uptake with vascular calcification and coronary artery following article disease.” As one can see, the study’s results revealed a hitherto largely unknown connection between fluoride exposure, coronary artery disease and cardiovascular events (e.g. heart attack).
“There was significant correlation between history of cardiovascular events and presence of fluoride uptake in coronary arteries. The coronary fluoride uptake value in patients with cardiovascular events was significantly higher than in patients without cardiovascular events.”
The argument, at the time, was the study was simply about a new diagnostic technique and shouldn’t be ‘read into,’ and that, presumably, the increased fluoride uptake value observed in patients with a higher frequency of cardiovascular events was a an ‘effect’ of the heart disease itself and not in any way indicative of fluoride’s causative role as a cardiotoxic agent — despite the fact that fluoride’s cardiotoxicity has already been consistently demonstrated in the biomedical literature.
Now, a provocative new study published in the journal Toxicology not only provides some vindication for our previous interpretations, but also raises serious concern over the cardiovascular complications associated with water fluoridation practices, showing for the first time that despite exhibiting an anti-calcification effect in vitro (cell model) fluoride exposure at levels found in people who drink fluoridated water exhibits artery-calcifying effects in the more important in vivo (animal) model.
Titled, “Effect of water fluoridation on the development of medial vascular calcification in uremic rats” the study opens with a description of the common medical justification for public water fluoridation:
“In order to improve dental health in the population, fluoride is included in tooth pastes and mouthwash solutions or is added to public water supplies at 0.5–1.5 mg/L (WHO, 2008), which has been a common practice in some countries since 1945.”
And yet, the study acknowledges that fluoride is a well-established toxicant that our body has to either incorporate into its tissues or excrete through the kidney’s to sequester or eliminate:
“More than 90% of ingested fluoride is absorbed through the intestine and quickly distributed between plasma/soft tissues and calcified structures, where it can be sequestered for years (Buzalaf and Whitford, 2011). When water is fluoridated at the WHO- recommended levels, the range of plasma fluoride concentration is usually 1–6 uM (Husdan et al., 1976; Singer and Ophaug, 1979). Fluoride is not under homeostatic control, and it is cleared from the plasma within few hours by the complementary action of calcified tissues and the kidneys.”
Those with chronic kidney disease have a harder time clearing the fluoride, which results in increased blood plasma levels, especially as the length of exposure increases.
The study noted that in healthy people, almost without exception, fluoride accumulates in the aorta, and in the elderly can exceed 100 ug/g [microgram/gram] tissue. Since atherosclerosis involves the gradual hardening and final calcification of the arteries with a form of calcium known as hydroxylapatite, fluoride’s role in replacing hydroxyls within hydroxylapatite crystals to form fluorapatite can be considered enhancing the cardiotoxicity of these calcium deposits due to the fact that fluorapatite is less soluble than hydroxylapatite and therefore more resistant to the body’s demineralization mechanisms (or de-calcification with natural substances such as magnesium, hawthorn or vitamin K2). The authors address this point:
“From a therapeutic point of view, this incorporation [of fluoride into hydroxylapatite as fluorapatite] may involve an additional problem, because these calcifications will be more difficult to eliminate, if at all possible.”
The report discussed how despite the observation that fluoride accumulates in the main arteries, “the effects on the vascular wall are not clear.” A brief review of the literature shows highly contradictory results, with some studies implying fluoride exposure actually reduces aortic calcification and others showing (as would be expected) deleterious effects on the cardiovascular system. This uncertainty was one of the main reasons they designed their study:
“The aforementioned divergent findings can be explained by the use of different procedures, including very high doses of fluoride, the duration of treatment, and the animal species, in addition to either an experimental or epidemiological setup. In this work, our objective was to clarify the effect of fluoride, if any, on the development and course of medial vascular calcification (MVC, Mönckeberg’s sclerosis) in uremic rats, using low, recommended concentrations in drinking water. Our rationale was that de novo calcified tissue in aorta should incorporate fluoride when exposure to this halogen is concomitant with the course of calcification, and subsequently the rate of calcium phosphate crystallization and/or mineralization should be altered, similar to the effects in tooth enamel or bone. We used two established experimental models of calcification, rat aortic smooth muscle cells incubated with 2 mM Pi, and rats with 5/6-nephrectomy [5/6th of their kidneys removed to model chronic kidney disease] and fed a Pi-enriched diet [Pi = Inorganic phosphate], in combination with low concentrations of fluoride (similar to that of public water fluoridation). Our findings have shown that the results are inverse depending on the experimental model, which highlights the need to carry out in vivo approaches when studying complex multifactorial processes, such as Mönckeberg’s sclerosis [a type of arterial calcification].”
The study found a striking contrast between the in vitro (cell model) and in vivo (animal model) results: within the former, fluoride prevented calcification, within the later, it enhanced medial [middle portion of the artery] vascular calcification in the arteries of animals whose kidneys were weakened. Keep in mind that they did not use ‘mega doses’ of fluoride in the animal study, opting for the administration of the World Health Organization’s recommended concentration of fluoride in public drinking water to ‘prevent cavities.’
The researchers determined that fluoride’s adverse effects on vascular function in the animal model were mediated by the inherent kidney-damaging properties of fluoride (nephrotoxicity). Whereas healthy individuals are not prone to significant or at least acutely discernible damage from low level fluoride exposure (though some functional damage and proteomic changes are observed at 5-8 ppm), those with chronic kidney disease (CKD), have impaired fluoride clearance, subsequent elevated plasma fluoride levels, which creates a vicious self-perpetuating cycle of fluoride-induced aggravation of their decline in kidney function.
The researchers summarized their main finding as follows:
“The main conclusion of our study is that CKD is aggravated even by low concentrations of fluoride, which in turn accelerates medial vascular calcification (MVC), thereby confirming and extending previous reports on fluorosis in CKD patients exposed to WHO-recommended fluoride concentrations in drinking water (Greenberg et al., 1974; Lyaruu et al., 2008).”
Their final comments are to call for a reappraisal of the risks/benefits associated with fluoridation of municipal drinking water:
“In summary, the effects of fluoride on renal function and vascular health are more complicated than expected. Our findings could help to decide whether the use of fluoride to improve the dental health of the population through indiscriminate practices, such as adding it to municipal drinking water, should be reconsidered and should be replaced by a fluoridation policy based on the health status of individuals.”
Ian: The strange thing is that we sell our UltraStream to many people because of its alkalizing capability, but even more people purchase it because of its anti fluoride capability.
It’s been reported that residents of Petone in New Zealand would “riot on the street” if the Ministry of Health decided to add fluoride to their water supply. The remarks were reportedly made by the community board chairman, Mike Fisher, who, it is claimed, said: “There was an outcry in the 1990s when Hutt City Council suggested adding fluoride to the supply and the reaction would be the same today. People would be rioting in the streets. They would be absolutely furious… We’re very proud of our water the way it is”. Along with their neighbours in Korokoro, Petone residents enjoy water from the same aquifer that “feeds the artesian water fountains in Buick St”.
The local council was said to have accepted the government view that fluoride was safe, but at the same time had respected the views of the residents. However, last week New Zealand’s councils voted strongly in favour of handing over decisions about water fluoridation to the Ministry of Health. Local Government Minister Paula Bennett is reported to have said “she was not considering a law change but Local Government New Zealand planned to lobby the government on the issue after the election, president Lawrence Yule said”.
How to beat fluoride at the tap here
Why Our Water Filtration Process is Better
Water filters are everywhere. They range in cost from under twenty dollars to hundreds and even thousands of dollars for an under-sink, electrically powered reverse osmosis system (like our own UltRo System).
So what makes our energy-saving Ultrastream mechanical filtration system a truly outstanding choice for American families?
The UltraStream filtration system comes in a good-looking case — white or black and brushed metal — and can be used on a countertop, or it can be installed under your sink for in-line service through a water filter tap. It’s compact and well designed, with an easy to change filter stack and a compact footprint.
The Ultrastream filtration system creates the best alkaline water you’ll find, both in terms of effectiveness and taste, but that’s not all it does. It will also add molecxular hydrogen and antioxidant negative ions, while it removes harmful toxins. For example, the Ultrastream will remove excess fluoride from water, lowering the concentration by up to 70 percent. It also filters harmful organic particles, pesticides and pharmaceuticals and removes heavy metals and chemicals like chlorine, chloramines and trihalomethanes, too.
Developed Over More Than a Decade
It took us over a decade of research and testing to hunt down the filtration layers needed to purify ordinary tap water through a process of extreme filtration, and then transform it into a health-enhancing drink accessible every day. The UltraStream system creates water with enhanced hydrogen supplementation that is also ionized to act as an antioxidant.
Fully Researched and Tested
At AlkaWay, we — unlike many of our competitors — are willing to put our money where our mouth is. We commissioned Griffith University to perform independent testing to analyze our filtered water under conditions reflecting the full one-year life span of the filter – not just the filter in as-new condition.
What did they find?
The UltraStream continues to perform up to spec for 12 months and up to 3,000 liters of water. The UltraStream system continues to increase the hydrogen concentration in the water 10,000 times and deliver oxidation / reduction potential, or ORP, of -350 millivolts up to an entire one year life of the filter. It also keeps the water’s pH in a healthy, alkaline range of 8 to 10.
Taken together, this means that the Ultrastream alkaline water ioniser outperforms more energy intensive systems that are offered at many times the cost. You can use it on your countertop or, with an inexpensive installation kit, under your sink. Once you’ve researched the benefits of alkaline water and ionized hydrogen water and looked into the alternatives that are currently on the market, you’ll agree that the UltraStream system offers an amazing value and that no health conscious household should be without it.
Our water filters were designed in Australia, tested in the US, and are manufactured in California, so you know that you can trust the quality and consistency of our products.
This week I’m talking about filter performance claims.
It’s a big issue that just gets below the radar of most consumers.
If you’ve never sighted our ‘whole-of-life’ laboratory test results, click here.
How we calculate a ‘whole of life’ filter test.
Firstly we make a calculation on how many litres we expect the filter to process. In our case we based it ona family of four drinking 2 litres per day every day. Multiply that out and we came up with the ‘target’ litre count.
Then we had to find a laboratory willing to run the UltraStream for the target litres. This costs a lot more because most tests are of a simple sample: a single test performed once.
In our case it was a local university. We still needed them to pass through a ‘witches’ brew of chemicals to see how the filter reacts to them. To run it continually would require 25 200 litre drums of poisons, so we do the ‘witches’ brew at the beginning of the test and at the end, but we actually run water from the laboratory supply through the UltraStream to the target litre total.
This tells us how the UltraStream filter performs if poisons/contaminants are introduced at the beginning of filtration and at the end of filtration. Ultimately it’s the only honest way to prove a filter.
So.. when you think of detoxification.. do you thin of its as a one-time event that you do by drinking the right water or eating the right supplements?
Simple fact #1. Your own body is capable of detoxification SEVENTY times a day.
You are detoxifying RIGHT NOW. You have a super detoxifier in your body which was designed to keep you clean over thousands of years. it’s call the liver. (And if you are into word association, think about it as a verb. It ‘lives’ you. Kool.
We’ve all heard by now of the problematic studies of fluoride in our drinking water, including fluoridosis, and IQ problems in kids.
Now there’s a new one. Fluoride, it appears, works synergistically to increase the arsenic levels in drinking water.
