We all know about antioxidants… free radicals AKA reactive oxygen species (ROS) are extremely damaging to us at a cellular level. We do all we can. We eat fresh color-rich foods; We take protective substances we are told protect us from this damage. So we expect to remain healthy and live longer.
That was our story and we were stuck on it. But was it that simple and if so why do we see sickness and poor health all around us? Is everybody wrong?
It’s true that free radicals damage our tissues. There’s molecular oxygen (O2), superoxide (charged oxygen radical), triatomic oxygen (ozone), the hydroxyl radical (OH-) hydrogen peroxide (-H2O2) and the peroxide radical. But… they are not all ‘baddies’. The hydroxyl radical (OH-) is by far the worst. In fact the majority of our free radicals are… wait for it… GOOD for you! They clean up after our metabolism creates waste and debris. They are our housekeepers.
But the hydroxyl radical – wow! It damages virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids (mutations), lipids (lipid peroxidation), and amino acids.
The so-called superoxide radical is not, in truth, as active or damaging as the basic oxygen molecule, despite its name. And the body makes an enzyme, superoxide dismutase, that cleans up the superoxide radicals.
Peroxide ion is generated briefly by certain white cells, to damage microbes before ingesting them. When it’s only out of place, it is potentially harmful to us.
You may already be aware that we have natural powerful antioxidant enzymes to help protect us: superoxide dismutase, for instance, deactivates the superoxide radical; catalase removes hydrogen peroxides, and glutathione peroxidase removes peroxide radicals.
Unlike these three, the hydroxyl radical can’t be eliminated by any natural enzymatic reaction.
That’s a problem in itself that had no answer from the experts until recently.
Not all ROS are bad and we need small amounts of ROS present, to operate as cell ‘signalmen’.
It’s part of a system called the cell signaling, a very important defence pathway. It sounds back-to-front, but ROS free radicals help get the antioxidant mechanisms in our bodies to function properly.
Those scientific papers that suggested taking antioxidants was bad for our health are not completely wrong. They just didn’t tell us which antioxidants! Indeed, they could be bad for our health if we took too many, or the wrong ones. Anyway, we’ve moved on. I can summarize the new understanding in one sentence: hydroxyl ions are very bad still, but the others we shouldn’t eradicate. It’s the balance that matters.
The question has never arisen before because no-one had an answer they could sell to us. So it was an ‘all or nothing’ approach. Kill them all and let God take care of it. Now we know different. We can knock out the ‘bad’ hydroxyl radicals, without harming the good guys… superoxide and peroxide.
And the Answer Is… Molecular Hydrogen!
It pervades our known universe. It comprises 90% of all atoms in the cosmos. It is two-thirds of all the atoms in the human body.
It important to be aware of the fact that we aren’t discussing singular hydrogen ions, which give us our phenomenon of acidity and alkalinity (the more hydrogen ions, the more acid).
This is hydrogen gas, of Hindenberg fame. (Remember the Hindenberg airship disaster?) Hydrogen (H) likes to form into pairs, which is H2 .
As such, the simple atom becomes a molecule.
Molecular hydrogen isn’t a simple Hydroxyl radical destroyer. It unites with a Hydroxyl Radical to form water.
So.. it would appear that if we could flood our bodies with molecular hydrogen we’d be Hydroxyl ion free and hydrated. But there’s more we need to know before we start snorting hydrogen.
The ‘right’ small quantity of reactive oxygen species is beneficial. More can clearly be toxic to cells. They all possess an unpaired electron, They are constantly looking for something to relieve this unbalanced state, and so we call them reactive. Their unending ‘search and destroy’ mission is capable of damage to all biological molecules, including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids (DNA etc.)
When their effect is long term, and their numbers in excess, that’s when we start to see lifestyle-related diseases, cancer and the ageing process. Acute oxidative stress directly damages tissue. Damage to cellular membranes, the wall around each cell, (plasma, mitochondrial and endomembrane systems), becomes the norm, initiated by a process known as lipid peroxidation.
Mitochondria, the small intracellular structures that generate energy for the cell, are a major site of oxidative stress. Without happy little mitochondria, we suffer immense fatigue and rapid ageing.
Now we know that Molecular hydrogen has been trialled and found to be excellent as a powerful and effective antioxidant for medical applications.
Molecular hydrogen has many qualities as a potential antioxidant.
It is infinitely small.
It rapidly diffuses into tissues and cells throughout the body, including into the brain.
It is mild enough neither to disturb redox signaling reactions nor to affect free radicals that function in cell signaling, so we can reasonably expect there should be little adverse effects of consuming H2.
400 Scientific Papers
We can now find over 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals that clearly show the health benefits of molecular hydrogen.
Since the publication of the first H2 paper in Nature Medicine in 2007, the biological effects of H2 have been confirmed by the publication of more than 150 diseases, physiological states and clinical tests in leading biological/medical journals. Several groups have begun their own clinical examinations.
H2 doesn’t only protect against oxidative stress. It also shows anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. It regulates gene expressions (whether a gene is switched on or off). It even triggers more of our own body’s own antioxidant systems.
Emerging science is clearly showing us that molecular hydrogen protects us against the deadly hydroxyl radical, while leaving the other oxygen radicals that are needed for physiological signaling undamaged.
How To Get It
In Japan, the home of molecular hydrogen research, several methods to ingest or consume H2 have been trialled, including inhalation, drinking H2-dissolved water, hydrogen baths, injecting H2-dissolved saline, hydrogen saline eyedropped onto the eye… even increasing the production of intestinal H2 by bacteria.
Two methods emerge as giving the highest concentration of H2.

The first claim of alkalizing the water seemed obvious
A pH meter easily shows high pH levels so most people conclude that this equated to high alkalinity.
Although vendors were claiming the water would increase levels of alkaline minerals in the body, the actual levels in the water were far, far below the recommended daily allowance.

Today most companies will not guarantee an electric water ioniser in a hard water area (most of the US).
The second claim of negatively charging the water also proved spurious.
As Tyler LeBaron pointed out, water is H2O it’s not an ion – so you are not going to have H2O+ or H2O-. It just doesn’t happen. It is not physically possible to ionize water itself because it is already in a covalent bond. Water consists of Hydrogen and Oxygen in a strong bond and is stably balanced ionically.
The third claim of microclustering has also suffered a serious credibility loss.
Vendors commonly claimed that groups of molecules of water reduced to a lesser number, thus ‘microclustering’ the water to create improved hydration. Recently a group of dedicated water ionizer users and researchers tried their best to find a scientific study supporting the theory – to no avail. As Tyler LeBaron said, water is incredibly changeable, swapping molecular states in femtoseconds.
Here is the conclusion reached by the coordinator of the working group of water ionizer researchers.
“The concept of stable microclusters in water is an interesting one, and various research studies attempting to identify and measure these can be found. Unfortunately, i have not been able to find any definitive evidence to take this from theory to fact. I honestly searched a wide variety of physics & chemistry journals for any studies to support the microcluster theory, but I could not. The currently favored model of water is one of a loosely-connected network which could actually be described as “one big cluster” with internal bonds constantly being formed & broken (on the pico to femto time scale). Even if these clusters were proven to exist, it is not clear how they might be beneficial, because water molecules travel through aquaporins in a single-file.”

Changing the Rules
Tyler LeBaron changed the rules of what was the truth about the water.
Tyler addressed numerous ionized water machine marketers who did not want his science-based conclusions to become mainstream. Tyler has worked with a group of Hydrogen researchers at the prestigious Nagoya University, Japan and immediately because an important authority and expert on infused hydrogen therapies and molecular hydrogen in water.
The change of focus from alkalinity to hydrogen rich water was welcome for another big reason.
The scientific studies supporting the use of hydrogen for therapeutic use are significant. Over 100 different disease studies have been completed. The new data explained all of the seeming miraculous health stories water ionizer users had released over the years. It wasn’t alkalinity or microclustering or negative ions. It was hydrogen gas

The facts are clear. The scientific studies number over 350, including over studies on over 100 different diseases, including virtually all the so-called ‘big’ diseases. Under the aegis of Tyler LeBaron, AquaSciences LLC, he measured the H2 concentration of our UltraStream water ioniser and filter and then compared then to a high-end electronic water ioniser. The results were stunning. After several months of use and at normal flow rates the UltraStream gave great results. iI infused hydrogen levels three times that of the high cost electric water ionizer, AND at around 12% of the purchase cost.
Electric units do produce more litres per use, but in our 15 years of experience, we know this doesn’t happen in most family and home use. A capacity of 1-2 litres per use is more practical and not really a problem for our customers.
